This Forum Used To Be Fun...
I could purposely say something stupid, and everyone would jump on me, and then I could sit back and laugh at their naivety. But nowadays, it's all anti-religion, anti-conservative babble, and there's a general lack for a sense of humor. I feel like that one guy in an airport who actually wants to go to Detroit.

What would happen if...
Somebody places units in spring so that if they do not get dislodged, they will control 18 centres by fall, but they NMR during the spring retreats and fall diplomacy phases, thus falling into Civil Disorder, but they still control 18 centres by the end of the year? Do they win, or do they count as having 'left'?
Also, what would happen if all 7 players simultaneously CD? Would the game update at an infinite rate? Would it be cancelled?
semck83 (229 D(B))

We could look at the code and find out. But surely it would be more fun to start a low-stakes classic game to find out. All would have to agree beforehand that Germany won/CDed.
ghug (5068 D(B))

This is why we need GR unrated games.
cteno4 (100 D)

Based on this game, it looks like whoever controls a net majority of the supply centers controlled by active players is the winner:

gameID=263

So if the player fell into Civil Disorder at the same time as he captured the 18th supply center, I suppose the winner would then be any player with 9 or more supply centers at the time. If no other player had 9 supply centers, then until some player DID get nine supply centers the Civil Disorder country would be available to any player who might buy in.

The only problem I can see with the example I put forth is that all players but one CD'd. I can't find any examples of a game that otherwise ended under the conditions described in the question.
cteno4 (100 D)
19 Apr 12 UTC
and yes, you saw that correctly: a webDiplomacy game (from back when this site was still phpDiplomacy) that ran until 1995!
What you have theorized cannot be confirmed from that game. He simply won by default for being the only active player in the game. I've seen that happen under many different circumstances. Also, I think it makes little sense both gameplay and coding wise to exclude resigned player SCs from the total board SC count for the purposes of winning with 50% of the SCs.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
19 Apr 12 UTC
I'm pretty sure the game doesn't count the retreats phase as a "missed phase". I think that missed phases are counted only during spring and fall phases when all players issue orders.

In addition, you can't have a game where everyone goes into CD at the same time. That would mean that: not only would all players hit the "join game" button at the same time exactly down to the millisecond, which is impossible and I could easily show it mathematically, but also the game coding would have to process the join-game clicking at exactly the same time, which it doesn't. Coding issues one command at a time.

Thus, the effects would either be that the last person to join would be the victor, or, depending on the code, the last person that the computer checks for CD.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Apr 12 UTC
Tru Ninja is partially correct, but not completely.

Retreats only count as missed (and builds too) if you have orders to enter during them. As the player in question probably wouldn't have a retreat to order, he wouldn't NMR.
fortknox (2059 D)
19 Apr 12 UTC
Tru is incorrect at the timing, I'm almost positive it is turn, not the last millisecond you logged into the game.

Tru IS correct in that the player would never CD, because he doesn't have two turns to miss before the game is won.

I don't know if there is a way to win with a CD. The only way would be to displace a non-sc unit so that it is forced retreated to an SC for the win, but when a unit is displaced on a CD player, it is disbanded, not retreated.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Apr 12 UTC
If a player got to 18 in thevspring but would have got to 19 except for a forced retreat disbanded then missed the retreat and fall moves, maybe...
semck83 (229 D(B))
19 Apr 12 UTC
But fk, one turn is enough to CD if it's the last turn.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Apr 12 UTC
If I recall the logic, that only applied to nations with one SC left as well.
semck83 (229 D(B))
19 Apr 12 UTC
Oh, right, thank you.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
20 Apr 12 UTC
Currently the game will declare you the winner at the end of the fall movement phase, before the retreat phase. So in the Spring you move into the 18th center, and then in the fall you NMR. Even if one of your non-SC units was dislodged, the retreat phase wouldn't happen because you would already have been declared the winner.

If that is ever fixed, then the scenario would be possible. But right now it is not.

And on the other question, if all seven players CD, then one will win, whichever one is left after the sixth country is marked as Left. It may always be the same country, or may depend on the order in which players joined the game, or something else. But someone will be marked as the winner. This happens from time to time when the server goes poof and some 5 minute live games are put into this state.
ghug (5068 D(B))
20 Apr 12 UTC
@Alderian, I think the idea is that you have a Spring retreat that you don't submit.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
20 Apr 12 UTC
Doh. Right, that seems possible. I'll have to load up my webdip install and see what happens.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Yes if you have a spring retreat in say, Albania, left to submit in spring, you should be able to miss 2 phases before the end of fall.

Nice. That's actually pretty funny.
Draugnar (0 DX)

So, the CD prevents the win. Interesting.

Alderian (2425 D(S))
20 Apr 12 UTC
That's actually what I did Draugnar. I switched to Russia and returned and after the build phase Russia was declared the winner. I wanted to try it again to see what happens if Russia returns in the Spring, but it was after 1am at that point.

Draug, but keep in mind the rarity of that happening. I don't think it has ever happened naturally on this site.

However, more common is the leading power CDing and presenting an easy solo or profitable draw to another.

The world is under attack again!
We are needing additional players to join the sequel to a very interesting game in which 5 major powers remained closely tied after considerable amounts of alliances shifted. The game is nearing end and the key players have agreed to rejoin the new game. however we need a considerable amount of players still in this world dip game.

Awww... I'm almost disappointed that it ended in a draw, though France would have won, most probably. Still, Russia, Italy, Germany and Turkey were almost dead. One more round and there would have been many more points to go around, too bad. I had incredible fun playing as Austria, which is a first for me.

Can you win without ever telling a lie?
In a F2F game recently a very moral friend of mine found himself at a loss for ideas with Italy. He saw Russia betray Turkey immediately, and Austria joined the fracas. France was a brand new player who barely knew the rules so he opted not to go for them. As a result he tried a Laponto maneuver, only to realize Russia was already annihilating both Austria and Turkey with a strong alliance with Germany, so killing more of turkey or Austria to benefit himself seemed inherently wrong.
