Racism. Worse in Europe?
An argument we discussed in Euro History today. Is the United States less racist than Europe these days?
DJEcc24 (246 D)

Lets look at football for example. A black player walks onto the field and the crowd throws bananas. Of course you will always have some people like this, but is it less of a problem in the US sicne we are in a sesse embarassed by our previous behavior in history?

I guess so. I live in Austria, and here, most people are either extreme right-winged or very left.
Our natonalist party, the FPÖ, often gets attention because of very controversial, Nazi-referencing statements. One politician once called Mohammed a child-molester and Muslims sheep-fuckers, another one claimed that Hitler had a good employment-policy. Also, the average Austrian probably has more prejudices against colored people.
redhouse1938 (429 D)

Although I've seen a lot of football matches and none involved the throwing of bananas to black people, by what I've heard on the forum the US is generally stricter on things like race. Plus the US has Obama, I would personally never have expected that.

And it´s the same with the Benelux states for example, Italy, and probably France and the eastern Europe.

Hockey last september:
Wayne Simmonds, one of the few black hockey players, plays his debut game for the Philadelphia Flyers.

During the game, he is given a penalty shot, and during the shot a member of the crowd throws a banana right infront of his feet.

Simmonds skates round the banana, takes the shot and misses.

It seems your soccer example is taken from last years hockey game.

People in the US are more racist, while people in Europe are more nationalistic. It is a fact that will probably never change. For example, it wouldn't be at all strange for a Pole to prefer a Nigerian to a Russian, or for a Kosovar to prefer a Chinese to a Serb. Europe is a mosaic of nations with complicated histories that make the question "what nation are you from?" more important than "what is the color of your skin?". In the American "melting pot", skin is the only thing that doesn't melt, so it's a strong basis for racism. A concrete example from a few years ago: my father, a European, traveled by plane from Washington DC to Seattle. Checking for any terrorists, the police at the airport routinely separated the passengers into two groups: one included only white people (Americans and Europeans, my father included), the other included people with darker skin (not just Arabs, but also Latin Americans!).

Zmaj might be right, but the fact is, that Europeans don´t get confronted with other races that often. But most also are racist when it comes to interact with black people. Many older people here still often call them negros, without aiming to be demeaning. But I have seen many Europeans who say that they don´t trust coloured people, because "they all sell drugs and are criminals" an example up to date: http://www.news.at/articles/1213/11/323528/wirbel-fpoe-tirol-plakat-anzeigen-verhetzung the advertisment says translated: "Heimatliebe instead of Moroccan-thiefs"

Of course, right-wingers in Europe are even more offensive against nations they don´t like.

Another reason is that the influx of colored people in Europe is much more recent than in the US. I don't know the statistics, but I'm sure if you look at the percentage of white people in 1948 in the NL it will be several orders of magnitude lower than in the US at that time, and than in NL in 2012. Several years after WWII, when the first Indonesian immigrants came to the NL, it was not uncommon for people to actually go and "see what they were like".
The European governments are against racism and for multiculturalism. In order to *show* this the governments pass enforcement laws.

This guy shouted racist abuse at a black player during a Man Utd football match. He was fined £200 ($316) and banned from football grounds for 3 years.

I think that is true, it has been a much more recent thing for europe. immigration really caused a lot of it after world war 2. It did have a lot to do with nationalism ( or domestic europeans not wanting to lose jobs to foreigners) but then again that can be said of America and the latin immigration of recent. I think racism has shifted for the US from less towards blacks to latino groups.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

I think that racism has been suppressed in America to the point that anyone who actually is racist keeps it to themselves, with the exception of neo-Nazis and other far-right groups.

...and don't count as racism as far as I'm concerned. I'm not impressed by the make-no-jokes-about-this-threads, I tend to take the attitude of the Drill Sergeant in FMJ: people are all equally worthless.

The U.S. is a big country and the level of racism varies greatly from section to section. By section to section I don't mean urban versus rural, I mean North East vs South vs Mid-West vs West Coast vs South West.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Actually that goes for Europe even more than it does for the US.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
16 Apr 12 UTC
That may well be, but I can only speak for my own experience here in the U.S. This is one of the things I really enjoy about the webDip forums, hearing what other parts of the world are like. For example, I had not known that Belgium was a country of divided ethnicity. So that makes me wonder if people outside the U.S. think of the U.S. as one big melted homogenous group when there is really quite a variety.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
True, and I personally think the research question that DJE poses is a really vast one that you can fill libraries with.
DJEcc24 (246 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
i agree race jokes aren't necessarily racist. i think its people laughing at themselves sometimes too.

geographically in the US though i think that urban v rural settings do matter. more interaction with different types of people would probably make you more used to other ethnicities therefore being prone to less racial thought
Wernazuma (589 D)

Just yesterday I attended a football (i.e. soccer, but it's actually played with FEET contrary to that rugby subtype USians call football...) match (in Austria), and there were 3-4 idiots making ugly "ape-noises" when a black player from the other team got the ball. It was good to see that the whole crowd acted hostile and before half-time we had the f***** out.

What I do sense is an extreme rise in anti-muslim sentiment (as everywhere in Europe) and a growing anti-"gipsy" sentiment. The latter is definitely aggravated by the increasing mobility of poor East European Roma and their visible presence as beggars, petty thieves, old metal collectors (and cable thieves). Before the EU expansion, the animosity towards the "resident" Roma minority wasn't near that high.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Yeah I guess that touches upon one of the differences in attitude toward race as well. In the NL there are some minorities that do "better" than others. You'll find the level of racism is more or less consistent with which minorities are considered to do "worse". For example, I know of very little racism toward the Surinamese minorities and particularly against the Hindustan subgroup within the Surinamese community, because they're in some ways "Dutcher than Dutch". It's different for people from islamic countries.
Also, in the US, I guess the "ghetto-effect" is much more factored in. If you're from a violent place, then odds are you're violent yourself. And since many colored people live in violent places, you'll find them overrepresented in some statistics dealing with crime. A Dutch person would be less inclined to accept such an explanation, pointing rather to the cultural background of the particular person as being inherently violent, then to their socio-economic background. Ow and Putin33, if you're there, by your standards all this makes me and my compatriots horrible racists and I couldn't care less. Just so you know. :-)

I love how Americans think Denmark is the capital of Sweden and then when they're asked where Sweden is take a look at a map and point to Australia. If you're that clueless about the rest of the world, no wonder you're a nationalist.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

@JCE, yes there is certainly a difference in racism levels for rural versus urban. I was saying that there are differences in levels between geographical sections of the U.S. beyond the simple rural versus urban factor. But I'm sure I wasn't as clear as I could have been.

To be fair, whether or not Mohammed was a child molester depends on whether or not you can 'molest' your nine-year-old wife.

Wikipedia: "According to the traditional sources, Aisha was six or seven years old when she was betrothed to Muhammad and nine when the marriage was consummated."

"To be fair, whether or not Mohammed was a child molester depends on whether or not you can 'molest' your nine-year-old wife."

There are a number of hadiths (which are primary sources) that point to her being a bit older than 9 years old at the time of the marriage (mid to late teens - remember that people didn't keep good track of birthdays and the like on those days) that trump the secondary sources written decades (or centuries) later, when Aisha's status as Most Favored Wife was important for the political legitimacy of the Ummayad caliphate. Also, if you buy into the marriage being consummated at nine, you would have to consider that her father (Abu Bakr) was very much alive at the time - Prophet of God or no, I cannot imagine any father eagerly giving up their 9 year old daughter as is alleged. Not to mention expecting a community that included thousands of fathers of daughters to not be offended by it.

Unless you're in the "Islam is a Satanic Cult" camp, of course.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

@ Mrcs

You're referring to R. Lee Ermy. He was originally supposed to be the military adviser for for the movie, but he asked Stanley Kubrick if he could try out for the role of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman. (The crazy door gunner in the helicopter was previously cast as Hartman). Ermy arranged for twenty or so British Army soldiers (the basic training scenes of the film were shot in Britain) to stand at attention. Ermy then proceeded to scream at them and insult them for fifteen straight minutes while crew members threw tennis balls at him. Ermy did not flinch or stop yelling once. Kubrick gave him the role of Hartman on the spot.

Why does Germany go to Sweden in Fall '01 so often?
I can understand moving to Denmark in spring to keep the threat alive as diplomatic leverage, but by moving to Sweden right away, Germany angers Russia. Germany's usually going to be able to take Sweden away when he chooses anyway if Russia doesn't open strong to Scandinavia, so why are people so eager to make an enemy right off the bat?
