@Dubmdell and YJ,
If you read my previous posts, you know that I am not for a draconian police state and that I think the individual should monitor himself and we all should be held to some standards.
When an individual repeatedly spews hateful speech, the community has a charge to do something about it. I can mute him of course, but that does nothing for the community. So if we as a whole do not think that racist or homophobic or whatever else is acceptable, then we should try to change their minds through civil discourse, but what happens when the individual does not engage in any meaningful conversation and continue his tirade in what is essentially a public space? It is not like someone says an epithet and boom, we ban him. As advocated by me in another thread, we should talk to them individually, as a group, and so forth.
To do nothing -and that's what muting or ignoring essentially does- is not going to stop these individuals.
Here is an example of a real life situation: what should people do in a public setting when there are people who are being racists by either their words or their actions? Should we not speak up? Should we not try to stop the actions from taking place? To do nothing is to passively condone their actions.
