New Tournament. Signup and fill out the survey here.

So, unbeknownst to me, Draug and FK have been trying to head up a revival of the leagues. So, as to not step on their toes, I'm going to try rebrand the tournament I was trying to start up.

So, fill out the survey to sign up for a brand spanking new tournament. I'll format it based on how the survey goes so give me your opinion and we'll get this thing up and running as soon as we have a healthy list of people.

It's the same survey as before (except with a nifty new tinyurl) so the few people that filled it out before don't need to sign up again.

I'm confident our community can support several concurrent tournaments if the Leagues and/or Ladder do materialize into something so I'm going to go ahead with making this anyways...

Sign up now.

Lemme know if any of you have questions or comments.

I'm a bit confused. The survey asks a lot of questions. Is any part of this tournament decided, or is everything still up in the air?
Yonni (258 D)
26 Mar 12 UTC
I figured to leave it in the air and cater to what the general consensus is. If you have a strong opinion or a novel idea for a new tournament, I'm all ears.

I just thought that this was a good way to garner interest and gather consensus.
Babak (26982 D (B))

I'd be totally down for a tournament of random games. Like 2 World, 2 Med, 2 Public Press, 2 Gunboat. lol. That would be unique and pretty cool.
ghug (2558 D Mod (B))
26 Mar 12 UTC
The problem with that idea is that you would either need a huge number of people (565) or a huge number of games.

^ghug, I don't necessarily see why that is true. You could structure it in many ways.
Babak (26982 D (B))
26 Mar 12 UTC
you could do it with 35 with four people playing only one World game instead of two. maybe getting a bye or sharing each others' scores for purpose of tournament points.
Yonni (258 D)
26 Mar 12 UTC
I'm sure it's doable. If that's what comes out of the survey, we can see how many people there are and figure something out.
Yonni (258 D)

13 people so far. Keep it coming.

Sign up and I won't disappoint. Tournaments for all!
Yonni (258 D)
28 Mar 12 UTC
Sign up has slowed down but the quality of players entered is quite good. Let me know if anyone has any concerns.

I'll just continue bumping this once a day for a little while - unless it bothers anyone or it becomes clear that nobody else is joining.

If the tournament stays at this size, I think it could still be fun - we can try come up with a creative way to stop it from being stale.

Yonni (258 D)

Sure! The more the merrier.

As an aside, I was actually thinking that it would be a cool idea to set up 3 or so concurrent games with the same people. Make it non-anon and encourage cross-gaming. Would add an interesting dimension.
Yonni (258 D)

Syd, you learn so much by playing with people of different skill levels. That's one of my favourite things about tournaments. You get to play against some tough competition that you wouldn't otherwise get the chance to.

My GR is pretty poor anyways, so come on in and join. I assure you that there'll be a large range of experience.

I like the effort here but I feel extremely reluctant to "sign up" to a tournament that is not actually a tournament yet. If nothing about the tournament has been finalised would it not be better to simply do a questionnaire of interested players rather than have people "sign up" to something that does not exist?

I might tick my preferences on your form but the tournament could very well turn out to be 30 world map games.
Yonni (258 D)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Ponies for all! Horse meat for others.
Yonni (258 D)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Fair point Sarge.
Obviously I'm not going to hold it against anyone who backs out of the tournament once they see what it is.

I guess this just, sort of, reserves a spot?

Besides, the only way to get it to be a tournament that you're interested in is to tick some boxes so go ahead.

And, trust me, it's not going to be World Map trny. There seems to be next to no interest in it.
Celticfox (100 D (B))
30 Mar 12 UTC
Oh please god no world map tourney
Sargmacher (0 D X)

More specifically, whilst the intentions are good, the purpose and message is very confused.

Your title is: "New Tournament. Signup and fill out the survey here" but there is no tournament and there is nothing, not anything, to "sign up" to. The only aspect of the title that has truth in it is the bit that says "fill out the survey". My point is that this is all very misleading - especially when people bump this thread saying that more players need to "sign up".

It's ironic that this thread is being bumped at the same time that Geofram's Gunboat Tournament thread is recruiting players. Geofram's Gunboat Tournament is highly polished, well thought-out, and clear in purpose and design. What's annoying is that this "tournament" thread could in fact be taking people away from Geofram's tournament when all likelihood the results of this survey are not going to please everyone and so the field of interested players will decrease even further.

Rather than fielding your own tournament when Geofram is trying very hard to recruit players for his - why not simply offer courtesy to that tournament before trying to poach players for this tournament that is trying to be everything but nothing at the same time.

I've actually never played a World Map or Ancient Med. game and can tell you that they're losing quite handedly at the polls.

Voting with the rest is actually quite close.
Yonni (258 D)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Sarge, I get what you're saying and - if that is the general consensus - I'll stop.

I'll give you a little background on why I brashly created this 'thing.'

I'm sure you've seen, over the past few months, several threads about restarting the WebDip leagues. In every one, people said they were taking the reigns and pushing ahead. I offered to help more than once but nothing ever came of it. Tired of waiting, I decided to take the initiative and start the leagues back up. I probably should have narrowed down the questions a bit but I figured it wouldn't hurt to cover all my bases in case people really did want World Map games in the WebDip league.

(Note: They don't).

Anywho, shortly after creating the survey and posting it, Draugnar sent an urgent message to cease and desist because he had in fact not left and was setting up the leagues. We talked for a bit and decided that the community could probably handle several tournaments at once so I did a quick hackjob on the survey and reposted it.

I really should have worded it and this thread better but I figured any action was better than none.

This was done either before Geo started publicizing the new GB season or I simply missed it - otherwise I certainly would have at least directed peoples attention there too.

Again, I really doubt that this tournament is going to detract from people's interest in the GB tournament but if it is I can stop bumping it and just put a smallish one together with whoever is signed up (if in fact they are still interested).

Fair?
Sargmacher (0 D X)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Absolutely fair.

And I wasn't at all trying to knock your effort - every effort is appreciated.

I know what you mean about the Leagues - it seems quite trendy at the moment to post a thread saying that you're "going to bring back the Leagues!" as if it's the Quest for the Holy Grail. It's becoming quite amusing. Personally, rather than every second moderator and moderator-wannabe talking about how much they're going to bring back the Leagues, I'd rather they just privately organise themselves, set up the necessary framework and then come to the forums when they have a tangible plan and can just offer a simple sign up. Threads and questionnaires aren't going to bring back the Leagues and there is clearly never going to be a happy 100% consensus on what the Leagues should be. As such, someone should just take the initiative and stake a claim as to what the Leagues are going to be under their direction and go ahead and set it up.

There's too many going around saying they're "going" to do it but no one actually has. Why don't people do something BEFORE they talk about it - then they might at leave some credibility. My example would be Geofram: he actually comes to the forum to announce a set up that he has organised, webpages he has created, and people can either join or not join - it's quite simple. That is the organisation the Leagues need - not another thread where someone tells us proudly that they will bring it back.

Sorry to hear that World isn't getting many votes in your poll. If you're interested in playing a World game, Yoni, I've been lately trying to set up a public press one.
Yonni (258 D)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Thanks Tasnica, but really, I have no interest.

Sarge, I guess we completely agree then. I tried that but elected to not get into a possing match with Draug over it as it seemed like I was really stepping on his toes by going via the path you suggested.

So, on that note, I think I'm going to continue promoting this tournament.

One potential idea would be to set up a tournament where everyone plays a GB, PP, and FP game (or several of each). There seems to be interest in something like that. We could even include season and tiers of that's why interests people. Call it a Grad Prix or Triathalon.

Of course, nothing is set in stone so please *reserve a spot* and give your opinion by filling out the survey.

AND sign up for Geo's gunboat tournament! Join WebDip's most successfully run tournament.

Remember the Scott Expedition, of which three members died 100 years ago today
"Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now.
