Acronyms
can someone give me a basic list on terms and phrazes used in the game, things like gunboat, full press, PPSC, playing solo? etc
Kartheiser (128 D)

Gunboat is a game without messaging.
Full Press is the opposite.
WTA = Winner takes all.
PPSC = Points per-supply-center
CD = To go into civil disorder (when some quits the game)
Kartheiser (128 D)
05 Jan 12 UTC
Oh, and 'playing solo' means to play the game without creating any alliances with other countries -- you're on your own.

NMR - No Move Received. Happens twice leads to CD

Hmm... that would be a nice thing to have in the help page, perhaps in the FAQ. If someone is willing to help me post it, I could put together a terminology page.

'Bouncing' = when two countries mutually agree to move to the same area, effectively bouncing each other out of it.

Juggernaut: Russia/Turkey alliance
Western Triple (or WT): England/France/Germany alliance.
Sealion: A specific plan to attack England by Russia, France, and Germany. Sometimes used colloquially to refer to a less specific plan being pitched by two of those powers.
Lepanto: A series of Italian and Austrian moves designed to get Italy into Turkey
Key Lepanto: The stupidest thing Austria can do, ever.
Stalemate line: A place where you can stop powers on one side of it from getting to the other side, used to force a draw. The most common one is bordered on the west by St. Petersburg, Livonia, Prussia, Silesia, Munich, Switzerland, Marseilles, Spain, and Mid Atlantic Ocean.
MAO: Mid-Atlantic Ocean

Oftentimes, powers are referred to by their initial, especially if someone is trying to tell you about an alliance or offer an alliance. For instance, EG would be England/Germany.

@pj - CD must happen twice in a row (i.e. on consecutive turns in which you had orders to submit). If you do something in between, you don't go into CD. And just going to the game page removes the NMR flag. So you have to truly have missed the phase by not even visiting the game to NMR.

Gunboa, refers to the idea of gunboat diplomacy, where instead of talking to (the japanese) about trade, the US simply parked a few gunboats in their harbours and opened fire....

So it is basically a variant where you're not allowed talk.

Global press only is the variant where you're only allowed make public messages on the global section to everyone.

Normal press is the standard of letting you talk to everyone privately.

Black Press is where all messages are sent anonymously (so the country you are talking to can't prove who sent that message) - this variant is not available here.

Grey Press is a mix of 'White' and 'Black' press, so you are allowed send normal 'White' messages, but also 'Black' anonymous messages. (also not available on this site)

Wasn't there a useful thread a few weeks ago that did this? Anyone got the link to that handy.

NMR results in all your units holding, a retreating unit being auto-disbanded, and no units being built.

The formula for disbanding a unit if you had a build is a messy of distance from your home supply centers and then fleets first armies second, then alphabetical order of the name of the territory... so the furthest unit from a home supply center and earliest in the alphabet gets disbanded first. (though i'm not sure how this is implemented on webdip)

To NMRs result in a CD, which means someone else can take over the country (for some investment of points)

Playing for a solo means trying to win on your own (which requires getting to 18 supply centers - and requires talking about stalemate lines)

A stalemate line is a position which once held can not be any set of moves be broken. So St. petersburg, held by a support unit in norway can't be broken from the south (with only Livonia and Moscow) is the edge of many northern stalemate lines... (obviously this only works if you don't have an enemy fleet in northern waters to cut norway... which means destroying the russian one and blocking mid atlantic to prevent southern fleets coming through.)

The NMR disbanding formula is spotty, but generally works that way. It's always funny if, say, Italy misses a disband phase and only controls Portugal, but has a A Tuscany F Portugal. F Portugal gets disbanded because it's further from the home centers.

By the way, the MAO/WMED corridor is pretty much the key to a lot of stalemates. If you get set up heavily enough on one side of it, ain't no one gettin' through.

Quick Support Question
I have an army in Livonia that wants to move to St. Pete. I have fleets in Norway and GoB. Obviously, the fleets can only move to North Coast or South Coast respectively, but can they both support the army in at the same time?

my worst fear
I play mostly in 5 min phase game and sometimes because my daughter is crying in her crib i have to drop.
Anyhow this is not the point I want to start a debate what you fear most playing against experienced players or against newbies ?
I fear more against newbies because they can do stupid things unpredictable that can cost them but also to the balance of the game :P

Question about a situation (mechanics)
Hello, I'm newbe and have a question about common situation :) . Let's suppose that I have one province with support center and enemy is near. Can I move army from that province to neutral province with supply center and build (from that new supply center) unit in the first province just before enemy will take it? (other words - if I will take supply center and hold there, will I be able to build unit before next turn?)
