Teaching a group of high school students
Well, due to the holidays, NMRs, and CDs, the game has been drawn. I thank you all the mentors that helped with the game. Hopefully all the students learned something even though the game did not finish on a satisfying note.

If there are any feedbacks or other volunteers for the next game (where I will ask for a pledge of no CDs), please feel free to let me know.
Thanks again.

not announcing personal knowledge of other players
is that dishonest? i'm in a game as turkey in 1910 facing a multi-country alliance (and holding my own, thank you very much) but I've just discovered that I'm facing an alliance of france, germany, england and russia and all of them know each other personally. is this against the rules? I might win the game anyway, because they're all pretty bad, but still... thoughts?

My roommate loves his LTE phone, but it's constantly dead. Speed isn't worth always having no battery, imho, so I wonder if the newer ones are any better.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Dec 11 UTC
Well, I tend to stay connected to a laptop or a power source (car charger) throughout most of the day, so not an issue, but I'll try one day without plugging it in but with good use and see how long I go.

I got a spring Evo4G about a year ago. The 4G is really fast, but drains battery and takes forever for the radio to turn on and off. I found I rarely used it outside the first month I got 4G...

spring == sprint (I use the Spring framework in my daily job as a developer, so I type 'spring' a lot more than 'sprint') ;)

I like my ATT 4g phone it is fast enough. Plus I always thought Blackberry was better than Android it isn't such a data hog so I can get away with a 200mb data plan much cheaper.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Though at least you don't have an iPhone Draugnar I don't like them that much. Too expensive to run.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
I'm actually seriously considering getting an iPhone. I'm getting pretty sick and tired of all the Android BS. If Win Phone gets better, I may go with that.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Well it is by Windows so is good. You might want to wait till win8 comes out abg its supposed to be a big improvement.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Actually, the only reason I'm waiting on an iPhone is because my digital life revolves around gmail and gmail support on iPhone is pretty piss-poor from what I hear.
Yonni (136 D(S))

Just for an iPhone. No complaints here. Everything just works so easily.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

win 8 will blow out iOS because it will be so much more powerful full flash and java support on phones.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
28 Dec 11 UTC
And it is so expensive to run though. what service would you use abg?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Flash is being discontinued on mobile devices, so...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
"And it is so expensive to run though. "

What does this even mean? On contract, the phone cost is comparative as is the data plan.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
28 Dec 11 UTC
abg windows 8 will be a full os that will run on mobile and desktops it will run the real flash not the mobile one since its a full os the type of what is ran on desktops now.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Incorrect. Windows 8 will only be a full OS on Intel chips, which most phones are not.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

it runs on arm processors now. and it runs full on AMD ones too.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
"and android is partnering with intel to make new phones that WILL have intel chips anyway."

So what? If it's a Google-Intel partnership, the phone probably won't be running Windows...

28 Dec 11 UTC
How powerful of a phone do you need to text your friends and visit webDip?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
28 Dec 11 UTC
many iphone plans run at 70 dollars a month+ minimum pretty expensive when mine is 30 to run a comparable smartphone.

@Yonni

Here are the problems with my current phone:

1) Shitty camera. I don't take pictures much, but when I do, I don't wan them to look like ass.
2) Never updated. Because of all the nonsense HTC and ATT put on the phone on top of the OS, updates are months behind, if they come at all.

All I use my phone for is:

1) Diplomacy
2) GPS/Maps
3) Other light browsing
4) Podcasts

I don't need a super powerful phone, but I do want one that receives updates. It's become clear that if I want an up-to-date Android phone, I need to buy a Flagship, which have to be bought off-contract and run upwards of $800. It's BS.

So, I'm now deciding between Apple and Windows. I think Windows phones hold a lot of promise, but I think Apple has a more refined product. However, I'm hesitant to go with Apple, because I do all my work on Windows and Gmail and I don't want to be sucked in to Apple's ecosystem, which I'll never use.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@D33

I'm grandfathered into a data plan with ATT, so that doesn't apply to me.

@Yonni Diplomat doesn't have friends, that's not really a concern for him.

I have an Android phone, and for the most part it's great, Samsung refuses to update it past Android 2.1 though, so I'm probably going to be getting something new soon. I've played with iPhones, and as much as I hate the modern Apple (Mac OS was so nice pre-OSX, they've turned their focus to pleasing those who aren't tech savvy and it's made them money but ruined what was once a good thing), iOS is quite well done, and is definitely worth using. I've used Windows phones much less extensively, but I've disliked what I've seen. The interface is clunky and inefficient and there don't seem to be any redeeming features. Windows 8 seems like it could be pretty good, but the fact that they're also marketing it as a computer OS makes it really hard to take seriously.

Diplomat, I'm also curious as to why you say iPhones are expensive to run.

"I have an Android phone, and for the most part it's great, Samsung refuses to update it past Android 2.1 though, so I'm probably going to be getting something new soon. "

This has been my experience exactly. I'm happy with the phone, but I'm tired of it becoming outdated before my contract is even up because manufacturers can't be bothered to update their own software.

With how fast things are moving, any smartphone, regardless of software updates etc, will become outdated before a two-year contract ends.

lol yeah, I may do that.

@ye

The difference is that Apple and MS regularly update their older phones.

"1) Diplomacy

Not that I'm a phone connoisseur (I've only had a smart phone for 2 weeks now...) but Apple seems to be head and shoulders above the competition in terms of reliability and user-friendliness. That's all I use my phone for (replace podcast for the occasional low quality game) so I came to the decision that an iPhone was my best bet.

Now, short of having a gun to my head, I wouldn't buy a Mac as my home computer but they serve completely different functions.
yebellz (729 D(G))
28 Dec 11 UTC
Yeah, its pretty lame that HTC and ATT aren't taking care of their customers.

However, that's hardly a reason to condemn the entire Android system. I went from an iPhone on ATT to an HTC Incredible 2 on Verizon. The difference in quality was might and day.

What I really disliked about the iPhone, was the need to use itunes to get any content between the phone and the computer.

With android, you can just plug it in via USB, and you can choose to have of behave like a drive, so transfering music, vids, pics and even backing up app data is a piece of cake.
Yonni (136 D(S))
28 Dec 11 UTC
"What I really disliked about the iPhone, was the need to use itunes to get any content between the phone and the computer."

Having switched from a Creative Zen to an iPod, I already bit the bullet on that one. I still dream of the days when I used to be able to use WinAmp.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Dec 11 UTC
@ye

Yeah, but the issue seems to be systematic. Samsung has just cut support for the Nexus S; one of their best selling phones and the same base for one of Google's flagship phones. There is no technical reason why it can't be upgraded to ICS, but it won't be because Samsung, like HTC and Motorola, don't think it's worth supporting an Android phone once it's been released.
fortknox (2059 D)
29 Dec 11 UTC
Someone plugged their android in? I just have it detect my home network, and when it is in the middle of the night, once a week, it backs itself up over wifi.

@abg i fail to see why you even want to deal with Samsung updates. have you looked at xda and/or cyanogenmod most of the roms i have seen on the site run better then the crap that came on the phone, i have the samsung epic4g(probably the only Samsung phone to receive 2 os updates 2.1-2.3) but im running ics on it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Dec 11 UTC
@fk - Mine does the same and using the phone at home doesnm't even use data from the plan. First thing I do at a resaurant or when the wife is shopping and drags me along is check for an open wifi on the phone.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Dec 11 UTC
Oh, and battery life is... Well, OK. It's not my blackberry, but I use it alot more. With it plugged in while at work and in the car, it'll probably do just fine. When we got in from the mall yesterdfay (5-6 hours of dinner shopping and more, about 3 hours active usage), it had about 50% left on the battery.

I got the home dock which came with and has a charger for a spare battery so if I do get low, I can always swap batteries.
