YES! Thanks Mr_rb, Promising trailer! Looking forward to that one! Too bad the two films are a year apart. :(

I always thought they would make a movie of the hobbit first, as its story is so much more suited for visualizing in a film.. I was pretty excited when they announced it couple of years ago, as I was a bit afraid they might not do it anymore because they already did the 'parent story'.LOTR.

Think I'm gonna read the book again over Christmas, has been too long.. can't even recall the entire story.

Yeah it is! I might reread it after I have seen the movies, so the story in the movie is all fresh again :)

Hobbit oges on adventure with dwarves. Hobbit gets lost in cave, finds One Ring (doesn't know what it is of course) and defeat's Gollum in game of wits. Hobbit rejoins Dwarves, gets involved in killing Dragon Smaug, sees dispute over Smaug's hoard start as a battle of three armies, then the Golblins and Orcs come to steal the treasure so differences are put aside to fight true evil. Some gain followed by major losees only to be rescued by the Eagles and Beorn. Treasure split up and everyone who survives (some real losses in the dwarves who took Bilbo on their journey, including the dwarves leader, Thorin) returns home.

The End.

You missed the bits about the spiders and the trolls Draugnar. Oh, and that Beorn is the biggest badass ever.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Dec 11 UTC
I just hope PJ doesn't candy coat it too much. Dwarves we got to know over the course of the book died at the Battle of Five Armies. We aren't just talking about Boromir and Faramir who we sort of got to know over half a book each, but characters like Thorin II Oakenshield. We get to know him as well as we do Aragorn or Gimli or Legolas. It's like when Gandalf the Grey "dies" except we get to see Gandalf return as Gandalf the White.

Thorin is buried with the Arkenstone and his lost blade, Orcrist. Imagine if Aragorn, Son of Arathorn, had died along side King Theoden at Pelennor Fields and been buried with Andúril and the Ring of Barahir. That is how the death of Thorin felt when I first read The Hobbit.

I was just hitting a few highlights. Yeah, the spiders are cool and lead up nicely to Shelob, the mother of all spiders in LotR. And, of course, escaping from the trolls when they argue themselves into morning and turn into stone is fun too. And yeah, Beorn turning into a bear and just whipping up on ORc and Goblin ass like nobody's business... Where was eat at Pelennor Fields?
Draugnar (0 DX)

SacredDigits (102 D)

Didn't they list Beorn as being at Pelennor Fields but never on-panel, so to speak? There was a list of random people who showed.

Yeah, Thorin's death hit pretty hard when I first read that book, and then Balin's tomb in Moria was easily the biggest gut punch in Fellowship for me. I cared more about those dwarves than I did most of the fellowship (with the possible exception of Legolas and Samwise).
SGrabowski (547 D)

Beorn was never anywhere NEAR the Pelennor Fields.

1) Beorn was a full-grown man in The Hobbit. By the time the story STARTS in Fellowship, Bilbo (who was 51 in The Hobbit) is having his eleventy-first birthday (for the uninitiated, that's 111). So, at the beginning of Fellowship, it has been 60 years since Beorn fought at the battle of Five Armies. (Annotation: Bilbo's speech in the Chapter "A Long Expected Party" in The Fellowship of the Ring.) Then, 17 years later Frodo FINALLY starts the trek towards Mordor with the One Ring. (Annotation: The Tale of Years, Appendix B, Return of the King). It is now 77 years since the battle of Five Armies. I don't know this for certain, as I haven't read the books in a while, but I believe I can safely say that Beorn is long dead by the time of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

2) Even IF Beorn was still alive, he would not have been anywhere near Pelennor. The North had troubles of it's own during the War of the Ring. Thranduil in Mirkwood was assaulted by the forces of Dol Guldur, including spiders, Lorien was attacked by hosts from Moria, and another host of orcs and trolls assaulted the lands of Lord Brand of Dale and Dain Ironfoot of Erebor. Beorn, assuming he was alive, would have been too busy defending his woodland home to go join the fight near Gondor.

So, no, there is no way that Beorn was ever anywhere near the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

I can already tell I'm going to have conflicted feelings over this movie. On the one hand, it looks freakin' awesome, and it seems that they're really branching out and doing a lot more background stuff and making into more of an epic. On the other hand, that is totally not in keeping with the tone or purpose of the book. At its heart "The Hobbit" is just a simple adventure story that charts the transformation of Bilbo (along with other characters, like Thorin). Gandalf is a periphery figure. Although we learn more in LOTR and other works about what he's doing and such, it is only vaguely referred to in "The Hobbit." But I see in the IMDB that they've actually cast the voice of the Necromancer, and from the trailer it seems this is somewhat prominent. Will that be amazing to watch? Absolutely. Is it true to the spirit of the book? No.

In a lot of literature, lycanthropes age slowly. I got the impression that Beorn was a lot older than his physical state would indicate when they met up in Hobbit.
Beorn was dead, but his decedents are mentioned by Gimli at rivendale as keeping the misty mountain roads open,
(I was reading the Middle earth wiki yesterday)
SGrabowski (547 D)

Perhaps, but my second point takes care of that eventuality anyways.

nm...thanks Santa.
actually never says beorn was dead, but it does say the thing about his descendents
SacredDigits (102 D)

So Beoorn's location and activities are unknown. He could be a Pelennor Fields ninja for all we know.
from Wikipedia.

"In the years between the Battle of Five Armies and the War of the Ring, possibly spurred by his interaction with Thorin & Company, Beorn stopped being a recluse, and rose to become a leader of the woodmen living between the Anduin river and the fringes of Mirkwood, rallying them against the remaining Orcs in the mountains. His people were known as the Beornings, and they helped defend Thranduil's kingdom at northern Mirkwood. As stated by Glóin in The Fellowship of the Ring, the Beornings also "keep open the High Pass and the Ford of Carrock." He presumably died some time before the War of the Ring itself began, and was succeeded by his son Grimbeorn the Old."

...or perhaps he switched sides!!!!!
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Dec 11 UTC
"presumably died" in Wikipedia doesn't equate to "Tolkien wrote that he died". And their is an entire Middle-earth wiki online that is much better than Wikipedia for all things Tolkien.
i never said it did, i dont think the question is answered in the writings, which is why i wrote or perhaps he switched sides.

Muting Mods
When Thucydides left the site for a bit, he made an announcement on the forum and his mod powers were revoked. Someone suggested the idea of muting him to see what happened when he came back and his mod powers were restored. (You can't mute mods.) So, I did. I have now looked at his profile and discovered that he is now a mod again. However, I cannot unmute him.

We seen the stats before about the average number of messages per game. That is one way of looking at it. But some people post lots of short messages, while others write essays. How much do you really write?

In 1927, the corrupt politicians of Washington state created a monopoly of ferry rights on Lake Chelan to a company owned by cronies. Today a pair of brothers have a case challenging this monopoly and Will writes brilliantly about it. If you European and not American don't waste your time.
