A Message from the Mods
1) Please join me in congratulating FK on his promotion to Admin
2) I have drafted a set of guidelines containing every possible scenario I could think of. It is being reviewed by the rest of the mod team now. Although Mods will still have autonomy, it will serve as an official reference for us, so we can do a better job at making consistent decisions.

Predict the future of Nationalism.
It may be useful to look at the history of Nationalism...

I suppose it is also useful to note how nations educate their young about nationalism...

Face-to-face Diplomacy in NYC
The website told me to write a four-line summary because my post was too big  I'm organizing a Face-to-Face game in New York City, with the hopes to eventually create a "proper" F2F community! Pitch follows.

How do you define metagaming?
I am curious to know a clear and definite description of metagaming and at what point does playing with friends become a violation.

Hosting a game at my home
I want to host a game at my home with my friends, showing webdiplomacy map on TV screen and using it as move validator. Is there a way to enter orders for all of my friends, using only one user? Some sort of 'game super-user'?

Ron Paul is officially an idiot...
I just watched him tell Jay Leno he is against seatbelt laws. His argument that people have a right to do with their own body is all fine and good, but seatlbelts keep the driver behind the wheel and in better copntrol of their car, therbye protecting the lives of others. He has just proven he is an idiot that can't be put in power.

Everyone's Holiday Reading? (Suggestions?)
Well, it's the Holidays--sorry, it's "CHRISTMAS TIME," for all those "War on Christmas" folks--and I know we have a lot of avid readers on the site...and I just finished the two novels I had left over from my semester's worth of free reading ("The Brothers Karamazov," which was decent but 200 pages too long, and "Tess of the D'urbervilles," which was good, if not a tad anti-climactic) and I was wondering--what's everyone reading? Suggestions?

jugernaut
can someone please exlpain jugernaut
i cant really understand how it works and why it is such a strong aliance
the times i tried to do it didnt really work
the rest of the players unite against it and i cant see the advatage

a juggernaut (R-T alliance) is deadly. But it's not easily concealed. You are right, if the rest of the players see it, it can be stopped early. But if its not caught in time, you will see nothing but purple and yellow.

And it works so well because both Russia and Turkey have equal lanes of growth.
Rancher (1652 D(S))

it works well if Russia and Turkey keep true to it, there has to be a lot of trust, because then the backside (East edge of the board) is completely immune from attack. As long as Russia can dominate the northern waters and Scandinavia the juggernaut just pushes forward like a steamroller

I find it's a lot more successful in live games where people have less time to spot and react to it than in normal games where people figure it out and counter it very quickly.
uclabb (589 D)

I think in general that fear of a juggernaut > strength of a juggernaut. And that fear of a juggernaut gives France a direct pass to the endgame.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
17 Dec 11 UTC
A "western" juggernaut of England/France is usually much more successful if they keep to it anyway because it's much less feared.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
17 Dec 11 UTC
The fear of a Juggernaut is certainly equal to its strength...

I've seen it pulled off, but at least on a 1:1 or even 3:2 ration against, it causes Italy, France, and England to unite and push the other way...

Summarily causing Germany and Austria to wonder why the hell they even joined this game. ;)

I think only one of my wins/successful draws was due to a successful juggernaut, whereas 2 or 3 are from AngloFranco alliances.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Indeed, on vdip I play a FoW in which all people concentrate on the jug which practically forces R/T to do.a juggernaut since they are the targets, meanwhile I as France stab all countries 1 by 1 and now I probably have more SCs as jug (I have 10 and still they fear the jug, though now some people start to think...
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

FoW is fun. Wish it could be an option here.

@Hellenic Riot:

Actually, now that you mention it, albeit perhaps inadvertently, I HAVE seen a lot more Anglo-Franco alliances succeed than Juggernauts...I wonder why...easier to mask?
taos (281 D)

anglo-franco works like a charm
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

@obiwan

a) There's not too much paranoia about it. If it starts to beat Germany then Russia, Turkey, Austria and Italy don't suddenly turn around and charge into them.
b) It's easier to keep going in the long term because they tend not to get in each others way until they reach Austria/Turkey in the east (England goes through Russia, France through Italy, share Germany) whereas in a Juggernaut there is immediate competition in the Balkans.
c) Stabbing is less likely because the first move will not get you lots of SC's usually, maybe one or two, and it is easier to then defend against it. Whereas if either Russia or Turkey open a large attack on the other, they will have a pretty good chance of steaming to a win.
