A Message from the Mods
1) Please join me in congratulating FK on his promotion to Admin
2) I have drafted a set of guidelines containing every possible scenario I could think of. It is being reviewed by the rest of the mod team now. Although Mods will still have autonomy, it will serve as an official reference for us, so we can do a better job at making consistent decisions.

It may be useful to look at the history of Nationalism...

I suppose it is also useful to note how nations educate their young about nationalism...

Face-to-face Diplomacy in NYC
The website told me to write a four-line summary because my post was too big  I'm organizing a Face-to-Face game in New York City, with the hopes to eventually create a "proper" F2F community! Pitch follows.

How do you define metagaming?
I am curious to know a clear and definite description of metagaming and at what point does playing with friends become a violation.

Hosting a game at my home
I want to host a game at my home with my friends, showing webdiplomacy map on TV screen and using it as move validator. Is there a way to enter orders for all of my friends, using only one user? Some sort of 'game super-user'?

Ron Paul is officially an idiot...
I just watched him tell Jay Leno he is against seatbelt laws. His argument that people have a right to do with their own body is all fine and good, but seatlbelts keep the driver behind the wheel and in better copntrol of their car, therbye protecting the lives of others. He has just proven he is an idiot that can't be put in power.

School of War Winter 2011
Since the original thread is several hundred posts long, consider this the kickoff for SoW Winter 2011

Note that each game that kicks off should have it's own thread.

General rules, for the unititiated
Each game has 2 experienced players, 5 not-so-experienced players. The goal is for the inexperienced to learn. To aid in that, there are two TAs/Commenters - who will both make comments in a thread on a 'yearly' basis (or more often as needed) just from reading the public press and looking at the map, *and* who can be available for advice via PM.

Note that the peanut gallery is generally also welcome to chime in if they desire, but the Commenters need to commit just as much as the players - if they don't step up, the point of the game falls apart.

I can step up and help coordinate this, but I can't commit to taking any of the roles. Or to be specific, I don't have the mental bandwidth to take on a "TA" role without also taking advantage of the position to be a snarky bastard, so I'd be the Rage TA, paired with someone who is less of an ass. While that might be amusing, that wouldn't really be educational, so I'm not going to throw my hat in unless there aren't enough bodies.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
25 Nov 11 UTC
Note: I'm not unmuting anyone for this, so if one of those individuals I have muted wants in, they can have someone else send me a PM. I don't particularly care if that is annoying to them.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
25 Nov 11 UTC
note that I believe each game should have 7 inexperienced players playing with 7 TA's paired with each player. TA's should be qualified for the country they play, so TA's are paired to a country and not a player. There are also 2 professors (more or less) for the game commenting in the forums. Thus, at least 16 people are involved in each season of SoW. That's my opinion.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
25 Nov 11 UTC
*shrug* I'm not wedded to a specific model, but IMO that effectively turns the game into seven experienced players playing Diplomacy via a third party.
Pepijn (212 D(S))
25 Nov 11 UTC
Not necessarily, I think my TA is sometimes shaking his head about my decisions and as far as I know at least one player lost contact to his TA.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
25 Nov 11 UTC
Fair enough. Lets see how many bodies we get, that can help dictate the format
I don't shake my head too often, Pepijn hahaha

I could help if needed like if one of the TAs got sick and needed a sub for a year or two.

As far as I understand it right now the first people with lower ghostratings who show up will be first in line, and if there are more then 7 people interested a second game may be started. Each player in the game will most likely have an experienced player as a "TA" who they should talk to and discuss strategy/tactics with. There will be 1 or 2 professors, picked from the top 50 or so ghostratings who will comment on a thread after each main set of moves. If goldfinger want's to coordinate this game as well that would be great since he did an excellent job with the last two, if not I'd be willing to help out, or just bug some other higher ranks to join as TA's/professors.

I have a limited knowledge, consisting of some Face to Face experience 20+ years ago.
I'll be a TA for sure, but I'd rather not worry about running it, thanks strat. Running The Masters is eating up the little diplomacy time I have

I feel ridiculous offering to help, since I'm currently a student in the last SoW, but if it was deemed that I have something to offer as a TA, I would gladly help out.

My participation is however conditional to the game starting in January. I simply don't have the time in December.

I'm willing to be a TA or if you all deem me (with a GR of 35) experienced enough a Professor. I too though, would need a January start since I just started 2 games and am committed to another in December.
Yes, please please please let it be a January start. There's still the old SoW I'm TA'ing, I'm setting up Masters games (shout-out to TA's and profs, I need subs :) ) and am TA'ing a student in zultar's game.

Everyone's Holiday Reading? (Suggestions?)
Well, it's the Holidays--sorry, it's "CHRISTMAS TIME," for all those "War on Christmas" folks--and I know we have a lot of avid readers on the site...and I just finished the two novels I had left over from my semester's worth of free reading ("The Brothers Karamazov," which was decent but 200 pages too long, and "Tess of the D'urbervilles," which was good, if not a tad anti-climactic) and I was wondering--what's everyone reading? Suggestions?
