Russia 1902 builds
I have a scenario for everyone that I just want their opinions on. In general, I'm terrible as Russia and the 1902 builds always trick me up.

Sorry, Perry fans, but a voluntary tax seems to be a bad idea. Discuss it here.

The most aesthetically pleasing sight on a diplomacy board.
For me, its a 7 SC Austria controlling all the Balkans in the middle game. I don't know why, it just looks good. Share your own thoughts here.

Dear Occupy Wall Street Protestors:
Get a job or, failing that, get a LIFE.
Promotion of Power and Self-Interest are the motivating factors in human decision-making, and have been since we made the first fires and sharpened the first spears. Yo're not going to override human nature, you're just making asses of yourselves...set REALISTIC goals or set yourself to the task of misery (if its the latter, enjoy...I know I will.)

Make Your Bid for webDip F2F 2012!
The Boston F2F was so amazing, I really want it to happen again.
I think the best way is for interested people to make bids (like the Olympics, but less corruption) for Event Coordinator (EC) and Tournament Director (TD). Please take your bids seriously. As Crazyter and I can tell you, this is an immense undertaking. See inside for more details.

Interested in a game?
So I just found out an old friend also plays Diplomacy and I've introduced him to the site. We've decided a live game on Thursday probably around 11am est would work best for his first game here, so I'm trying to find quality players who won't nmr. I haven't decided on specifics so far except for day and time so input is welcomed. If interested send me a pm or post below.

When they say, "Throughout the pants there are multiple hit marks, stains, and tears," do they mean tears like parts that were ripped or tears like crying? I prefer the latter explanation.

War on Terror
I had a professor today make the claim that the US let Osama Bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders flee into Pakistan from Afghanistan in order to enable the "War on Terror". Thoughts on that?

hilarity of the day
My little sister, 16, who I've always found to be a sharp young woman, mentioned today that she does not really know which months go in which order, something that to me seems should be a given part of any education. When I asked her, "Well, what the heck were they teaching you in 2nd grade?" she giggled and replied, "Jesus."

Good thing those private schools have their priorities straight, eh?

Haha, true. But my point is, isn't Northern Spring, Southern Autumn? Or are they both Spring? Or is it some weird scale?
I think my first was right, but I don't know. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Jahreszeiten99_DE2.jpg

Yes, you can tell that by the chart. But, I don't know if people in the SH call Oktober "Spring" because it's warm. They may still call it "Autumn".
Were is an Australian when you need one? ;P
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Herr - Correct. Winter is Summer (and vice versa) and Spring is Fall. It's easy. The order is the same, just shifted by 6 months.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Draug

But, do people in the South call Januar Summer, or do they still call it Winter?

I guess my question is, do the seasons map to local temperature, or do they map to specific months?
@Abgemacht, Bingo. That was my question.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 11 UTC
The few folks south of the equator that I know reverse them and call December 21-March 21 summer.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Oct 11 UTC
OK

I guess that makes sense. That way, Winter always means "cold". I guess I had never really thought of it before.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And you always plant in the spring and harvest in the fall.
WhiteSammy (100 D)

wait.....according to that chart, the southern hemisphere doesnt get anywhere near as hot as it does in the northern. DAS RAYCIS
Okay, that makes sense.
WhiteSammy (100 D)
24 Oct 11 UTC
Would that be because the southern hemisphere isn't exposed proportionally to the sun as much as the northern hemisphere is? In the diagram it looks like the northern hemisphere is hit directly by the sun at around halfway to the pole but yet on the southern side of "summer" it is hit only about 1/3rd of the way to the south pole.

Is the diagram disproportional on purpose or just haphazardly slapped together to easily depict what is occurring?
@Sammy, You know the Earth isn't perfectly up and down, right?
WhiteSammy (100 D)
24 Oct 11 UTC
Another thing, that chart shows that the northern hemisphere has hotter summers AND colder winters. How is that possible when you have a substantially higher summer temperature. Wouldn't that mean that the sun would hit closer towards the equator during the winter months in the northern hemisphere and it would in the summer months? That to me would suggest that you have warmer summers AND warmer winters not higher and lower.

"Is the diagram disproportional on purpose or just haphazardly slapped together to easily depict what is occurring?"

What? It's a plot of data. What are you asking?
WhiteSammy (100 D)
24 Oct 11 UTC
Yes im aware that it isn't perfectly spherical but still. I wouldn't thing that it would be so egg-shaped as to have that affect on the differences in average climate.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Herr/Sammy

I believe the reason is because there is more land in the NH than SH. Water doesn't heat very quickly, so the more land, the more heat.

@abge

I was talking about Picture 2(the diagram) not the line graph in Picture 1.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Oct 11 UTC
Sorry, I didn't realize there was a 2nd link.

The reason Winter is colder than Summer (even though we are closer to the Sun in Winter) is because of the tilt of the Earth's axis.

The reason NH Summer is warmer than SH Summer is because of the extra land-mass in the North.

Yes, if anything my chemistry class taught me that water has one hell of a constant(mind went blank on the name im looking for and google isnt helping). The constant that determines how much energy is needed to raise or lower the temperature of a given element or compound by 1 degree.

Heat Capacity.
WhiteSammy (100 D)

Specific Heat is what i was looking for.
WhiteSammy (100 D)
24 Oct 11 UTC
"The specific heat of water is 1 calorie/gram °C = 4.186 joule/gram °C which is higher than any other common substance"

I knew it was 4 something but its been 2 years since i've done any chem classes seeing as i went into game level design and graphical engineering.

@abge hit it on the head. Land heats up and cools down quicker than water. The SH has significantly more water there fore the climate remains more temperate year round.

For all you religious types out there...
Question: is it more sinful to get a gay divorce than it is to get gay married? I mean, say you get gay married, BAM! You're going to hell for sure, right? But then you realize the error of your ways, and decide you want a gay divorce to get back into God's graces... but divorce is a sin too!

So is it better at that point to just stay gay married? Or is the the flames no matter what? I'm so confused...

Russia-US Rail Link
The BBC have released this article/video ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15387714 ) detailing outlines for a Russian plan to link Russia with the US by an underground train tunnel link across the Bering Strait. Despite the cost, it sounds amazing! What do the rest of you think?

Steven Pinker on A History Of Violence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MfYlSBbp0k4

Since this forum seems to lack in optimism, trust in institutions like government control over violence, courts and modern society in general, this rather long video by professor Pinker seems like a good thing to post here. Anarchists, watch out!

An interesting little "bug" that could affect GR...
So, this game (gameID=64994) was drawn in the last half hour (around 9:45am), yet the time stamp says it ended at 5:30pm Eastern last night.

If this had been the first, instead of the 24th, this game could have been included in the previous month's GR. Something seems amiss there.
