Computer skullfuckery pt. 2
So I'm in four games right now and they're all pretty fucked over because I CDed/near-CDed due to virus issues. I'm looking for a replacement in 3 of them. Details inside.
So I'm in four games right now and need out of them because I don't have frequent enough internet access to play them properly. They're all fairly high-level competition, but given my level of desperation I'm opening sitting up to any applicants; just know you're going up against (probably) top-200 or better competition in all of them.

There are two ways I can get this resolved:

(1) Find a sitter for the four games. If you are interested in sitting for me, PM me for details to set this up. You are, of course, expected to complete the games, join no new games and troll the forum occasionally in my absence.
(2) Ask to take over a position in one or more of my games. Again, PM for details. If this option is pursued, I will only need replacements for three, as the fourth is a 3-day-phase game where I am certainly dead (and, thus, can probably find time in the next week to enter one order 2-3 times). The other three positions vary in viability; PM for information.

Thanks to everyone who volunteers, and my sincerest apologies to those of you in my games who had what were wonderful games going screwed over due to me.

I know what you're going through. I was in 4 games when my computer crapped out on me. I was going to definitely solo one of them, possibly solo a second and draw for sure on the remaining 2. I had to simply draw all 4 of them, some of them with 5-way draws, just to avoid the CD. It sucked.

I've been a little spotty myself due to time constraints, and as such I haven't been putting in press up to par. However I could, if you can't find someone else, sit for you.

If nobody else offers feel free to PM me.

I'd rather not take over games though.

I've PM'ed Eden, and I'm in only one game right now, so I think that I'll be able to help him out without you having to get involved, abge.
No one's denied pauses -- in fact, 3/4 games were paused in my absence, so my fellow competitors have been incredibly graceful with regard to that.

I've got a few offers in, and I'm going to get the sitter momentarily. Thanks so much!
Also, AWW YEAH HARD DRIVE FAILURE

lost everything on the hard drive because of unexplained physical damage to the drive (o_0). I have backups somewhere but not for a few weeks at least, so I kinda lost all my class notes for the month of October. nbd

wow...keeps getting better.

I had a problem years ago where the OS failed and we tried to reinstall windows xp but didn't have the disks but we did have windows 98. Installing that was a failure. The graphics were closer to 4-bit than 8-bit but everything was terrible and we couldn't access anything. We had all our family pics from when my oldest son was a baby, and everything else on there. Fortunately I knew a guy that was taking CIT classes in college and he had is prof simply extract the data from our hard drive for us and then we junked the computer.

Get a lenovo; this won't be an issue.

That's why you should always have a spare USB hard drive enclosure on hand. Plop the bad boy out of the computer and into the USB enclosure and you have it as a D or E drive for the new computer.

That's doesn't fix Eden's problem, unfortunately... Geek Squad might be able to recover the damage boot sector though and get the data off of it.

Have you had good luck w. Geek Squad, Draug?

I've never talked to anyone at Geek Squad that knew more about computers than I.

I've never dealt with them as I can do it myself, just like you. But I've had a few friends who needed emergency work when I was out of town and they gave a good report.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I still highly recommend getting a lenovo. They use far superior hardware and they have some nice software changes to Windows. They also have great recovery/backup options standard on the machines.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And they cost $$$.

My wife bought a Sony Vaio for $400 and it has been a great machine so far.

I take that back about the costs. A quick search on amazon show them for $300-$400 as well.

Lenovo or Vaio?

@Tom

Was that in reference to a Sony or lenovo?

@Draug

Yeah, you can absolutely get a cheap lenovo for around $400. But, you can also get much nicer ones as well.

Good. I was going to be shocked if you had problems with your lenovo.

My mom has my old T60p. She recently dropped it down a flight of stairs while it was open and on and nothing was damaged.

I'm in the market to replace my old Dell Latitude E6450. What kind of numbers do the Lenovo's come with? I need something with a decent (for a laptop) graphics card. Doesn't have to be a gamers delight, btu shoudl run WoW and STO in a moderately decent framerate, detail, and resolution.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

^ I also would be interested in suggestions. I'm too dirt poor to buy a new comp, but my roommate is looking for something, and I know very little about computers.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

lenovo has 2 brands: the Thinkpads (which are the classic, IBM style laptops) and the Ideapads (that are aimed more for consumers).

Both are high quality, but the Thinkpads have some nicer software features and look a lot nicer (but come at a higher price).

If you're a serious gamer, my advice is always to go with a desktop. Laptop gaming never ends well. However, for moderate gaming, the Ideapad Y series is pretty good.

WOW and STO are fairly low-intensive when it comes to graphics, so almost anything should be fine. If you want a more powerful machine, I'd suggest the Thinkpad T series. I prefer my laptops to be very portable (as I have a desktop only for gaming and a lab computer only for running code), so I use the Thinkpad X series.

With the X, I'm able to get OK framerates in Minecraft and LoL, but WOW may be a bit too much, especially if you like to play for several hours at a time.

@Tom

What does your roommate use his computer for? But, basically, my suggestion would be the same: X for portability, T for power, Y if he really wants to game and for some reason can't have a desktop.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
21 Oct 11 UTC
Ok. That was helpful. He does not game at all, so I'll pass on the suggestions about the other two and their respective strong suits. Thanks much abge.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Oct 11 UTC
I'll look at a Y for myself. I don't deo desktops as I like to sit in the family room while I work with the occassional break to go play poker at ClubWPT or WoW or STO. STO *can* be intensive if you turn on all the lighting and shadow effects as well as the highest character detail along with phongs and lensflares. But I tend to run it without the last two and low to medium detail and lighting with minimal shadows as I'm more about the game play and not the photorealism of the world.

Game drawn
Is it possible to draw a game with a clear stalemate line in which one nation has refused to draw even though the same exact moves have been made by everyone for many turns? And there is clearly no way to break the lines besides an NMR or an attack between the allied powers which has not happened in years and will not happen since it is a WTA.

This was probably caused by a software bug. The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer.

its ridiculous. If they want to wait because they cant play in the next phase or something, then they shouldn't have agreed to play in the game in the first place with that phase length
