Who knows anything about the human heart?
My fiance's father has had two heart attacks in the past month. He is 58 and lived in Paris for most of his life (he moved out north of Marseilles to the country 3 years ago). He is not overweight or underweight; and resists smoking. I am having to drive back and forth every weekend (about 1100 km or 700 miles) for her to visit him. What are his chances for survival? Can he get better?

Raising taxes on the rich
I was reading the forums and I am displeased by how many people think taxes should be raised on the rich. What an outrageous idea! It is the rich who create jobs that fuel the economy. In fact, last year alone my company made over 100 new jobs. If the rich have their taxes raised, even more jobs will be lost.

Buying this site
I have been looking around this site and it seems like it is a well made site. I have bought websites in the past and this seems like a worthy one. Would the current site owner contact me on how much he/she would charge for the ownership of the site.

Does cancelling a game make it impossible for a mod to investigate cheating?
If I were to cancel a game, would that make it impossible for a mod to investigate cheating in the game?

Locating a mod
Why am I so stupid I can't figure it out? I have what I think is a pretty obvious example of cheating and know enough not to accuse anyone on the forum... but even after checking the FAQ I can't figure out how to find a mod.

Inflation in GR?
Does your GR naturally rise over time? Given the statement that you supposedly improve each game you play for each experience, if you are in the top 300 now, is it natural to fall within the, say, top 150 6 months from now?

Draw vs point gain survive
Clearly, in WTA, the draw is superior. But what about in PPSC? Would you rather draw for 1/4 the stack, or take a survive for 1/3 of it? I tend to chose the second option so far, because that will maximize my points, and GR I believe.

Are there those who disagree? Do some people believe that anything less than a draw is a loss, even if it's worth more points/GR, and are these the same people that refuse to play PPSC?

Rhetorical Questions
Why does country music make me wanna punch a baby in the face? Why does Ford build a 4-cylinder Mustang? Why does most/all nun porn come out of Italy? Speaking of porn...What is up with Russia and rape/incest porn? What is up with Germany and pissing/bukkake porn? Why did I start this thread?

Please pile on with you own rhetorical questions, please. I need a good laugh.

Anwar Al-Awlaki
The United States has assassinated an American citizen, never having been charged or indicted; this has sent a precedent that anyone the government deems a "threat" by a legal analysis the government won't even release can be blown up from the sky. There is no outcry or even discussion among most Americans; he is a terrorist. When people exchange liberty for security, they deserve neither.

Ulysses, James Joyce
So, I'm reading Joyce's Ulysses this week as part of my studies. It's a renowned and controversial text so I figured many of you here would have something worthwhile to offer me on it. Although I expect and welcome a fair amount of comments of ridicule - I hope some of our more scholarly contributors might be able to offer me an insight/judgement or two.

yes, Putin33 -- I was an English major way back in 1989 ... lots of pee if I recall

but what i know is that much better is "The Dubliners"

Funnily enough, I'm also currently reading this for class (though I planned on reading it later anyway, when I could afford the papeback version I wanted.)

Aaaaand...

Yeah.
Haven't read much of it.
I've got two essays due tomorrow and a position paper on the UN due in a couple of hours.

Haven't had time to ready much of it. :)

But I LOVED its namesake, "The Odyssey" is a Top 10 read on my list, and Odysseus is cool...and James Joyce's "The Dead" was interesting, if a bit slow in spots...so we shall see.

James Joyce is a bore. I struggle to get into any of his pieces.

I was hoping you would respond obi, I thought you might be familiar with Joyce. The Dead is an interesting piece, as is Dubliners on the whole. I'm looking forward to finally finishing Ulysses, it's been on my shelf for a while.

Putin33: If you've read the text, I'm disappointed that's all you could offer.

Sorry I find stream of thought writing painful to read. Couldn't make it through. I also don't much care his overwrought and showy writing style. He is Salman Rushdie with bathroom breaks. I'm not much of a fan of plotless, punctuation-less Modernist literature.

That's a shame - Mrs Dalloway is great.
I have to read Midnight's Children and The Satanic Verses next week, so I'll get back to you on Rushdie :)

The only thing I know about Mrs. Dalloway is the references to it in The Hours.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
12 Oct 11 UTC
That's a shame! The Hours was born out of Mrs Dalloway. Mrs Dalloway, in my (and many other's) opinion, is a great landmark piece of literature. It's definitely worth reading, even if just to have an awareness and to be able to criticise - as Putin has done.

I'm painfully aware of the number of "classics" that I have never read, and borrowed Ulysses from the library a couple of months ago. God, what steaming pile of turd that book was. I acknowledge that perhaps I should have read The Odyssey first but I'm not sure that knowing the parallels with Homer's work would have improved the experience for me. Definitely the most disappointing book I can remember reading in the past 10 years, at least!

P.S. I'm a bit worried I might not have made myself clear - I really didn't like Ulysses.

I have read a lot of classics, but there are way more classics to read than free hours in a lifetime to read them. Right now I'm working on Les Miserables. I've read everything Dickens ever wrote. Pretty much all of Dumas' novels. Most of Shakespeare (haven't gone through all his sonnets) and for a little newer classics: all of Poe and Conan-Doyle and Wells and most of the established American authors like Steinbeck and Hemingway, Twain and Hawthorn, Sinclair and Updike... You get the idea. I just haven't gotten to any of James Joyce's works.

Haven't read it but I remember having to read an anthology of Joyce's work in my senior year of high school. The Dead was good.
I suppose Joyces' pieces are fantastic if you're really into literature and all the nuances, subtleties, etc. -- as I understand it his use of symbolism is widely regarded as some of the best ever.
I'm with Putin on the stream of consciousness stuff though (and modernism in general). I haven't read Mrs. Dalloway, but To The Lighthouse was probably the most tediously boring piece of literature I've ever had the misfortune to come across.

If you are new to Joyce I really recommend reading "The New Bloomsday Book: A Guide Through Ulysses" or a similar guide. There is simply too much depth in the work to take in on the first read.

"If *I* Say Its Too Hard, Joyce Has Clearly Failed.*
^True quote from a guy so pompous even *I* can't stand him (who claims to know all about...everything, and knows nothing, INISISTING English people wore no pants or anything of the sort until Henry VIII, and that tarring a guy's ball's is ESSENTIAL to understanding Huck Finn...not kidding, he said this)
1. If a work is "too hard"/unclear to you, your fault, authors's fault, or both?
2. I argued you should read such works twice, he said bull--opinions?
