Can you choose a country in an anonymous gunboat game?
I have gotten the SAME country in the THREE out of FOUR World DIP Gunboat games. THREE TIMES THE SAME ROTTEN COUNTRY.

Is this just bad luck or did I not see how to set a preference list???

Well, folks, I just watched a live debate on the film with the makers...they have Shakespeare MURDER Marlowe and Elizabeth pump out TONS of kiddies! So: anyone HERE seeing it? And what does everyone think about this?

I have a cunning plan
What if we all try and derail all of TC's threads, so that he mutes every single person on the forum? Then every one of his topics will be him arguing with himself. It's not like a reasonable discussion can be produced in those topics, so we won't miss out on much anyway.

Why conservatives want to end many social programs.
It's not that we hate the poor, downtrodded, abused people. It's one simple thing; we expect adults to act like adults. If that is too much for us to ask, then maybe we need to re-evaluate the direction our society is headed.

I don't like the Like buttons.
Like this thread if you don't like them and maybe Kestas will get rid of them.
Octavious (2732 D)

It is all depressingly Facebook, isn't it? If we're going to go down this road would should at least try to be a bit different and have a "mild appreciation" button instead. Perhaps even add a "vile and repugnant" button for the threads that you really hate, or a "Tettleton" button for a thread that's painfully dull, tedious and predictable.

But yes, better to scrap the damned things :)

This experiment is about collecting data. I want to see whether there is decent buy-in for self-moderation schemes (and.. agree with it or not Facebook's terminology is the most familiar).

I like this thread because I do want to hear some decent back and forth about this. But as a slashdot person, knowing these systems are much older than Facebook, I'd rather we discuss more carefully than "webDip is trying to copy Facebook; scrap it"

(Finally if people think the forum is fine the way it is say so, otherwise all we hear is how it needs fixing and we try stuff like this out)
☺ (1304 D)

I don't like the way it's currently instituted, but I like the idea, Kestas.

I think the best way to do it is this: Allow people to upvote and downvote comments (and perhaps give them a D point for each upvote and take one away for each downvote (to a minimum of 100?)). Then comments below a certain threshold automatically don't get shown. That's really the best way to self moderate the forum, if that's actually what you want to do. But a one way moderation isn't really going to do much, I don't think.

And I don't like the "like" phraseology. I'd much rather see +1/-1, since that seems more "like" WebDip.
Anne R (556 D)

I think the "Like" is not necessary. You like a thread or are interested in the topic - you read it, you don't - just don't open it. More useful I find the mute-button. And in my opinion some people should be banned from the forum for being extremely rude or for trolling all the time

yeah if you could make it a +1 button it would be much more in our culture if you know what i mean.

One of the nice things about the DIY +1 system that currently exists is that you can see who it was that +1ed you and what it was about the post that they liked if the did the quotation mark thing. An anonymous like that covers the whole post seems to be something of a step backwards.
hellalt (113 D)

I think users define programs and technology (tron reference).
if that's the case then the only thing webdiplomacy.net users have already shown they want is a +1 button for comments.
That's just about it. everything else is useless cause noone asked for it.
Don't let the programs win!
redhouse1938 (429 D)

Maybe we can merge the like and the mute button into a "mute like" button, where you no longer see Likes. I immediately recommend adding to that the "like mute like" button, so we can see how many people dig this plan.

Agreed, the +1 is something this forum has been using for as long as I've been here, and I think changing the like button to it would suit the forums personality better. I can amost guarantee that some of our members do not have facebook but they have all seen a +1 -1 on the forum at some point. I will also keep posting my idea of putting a contact us button at the top or bottom of the page that leads to the mod email.

Hrm... I was going to like this thread because hellalt hated the likes on threads, but then asked for the likes, so I don't want to like it... so either I like it and show my support for hellalt, or I don't like it and agree with hellalt. This is a trap and I'm stuck :(

Seriously, though, I think this is just the start of a concept that will allow better self moderation of the forums. It is new, just wait until it matures and he adds more to it.

I don't agree with the idea of people gaining or losing points based on how much people "like" their posts. To easy to take advantage of and not in the spirit of diplomacy. I can see people losing points just because they have a different opinion or new players starting "give me points" threads.

Otherwise I'm fine with the +1/-1 just to see people's opinions on a post.

Also, thanks for the "mute thread" option, I don't like muting people but there have been plenty of threads I would like to disappear.

Libyan Intervention
http://dailycaller.com/2011/09/27/free-for-all-up-to-20000-anti-aircraft-missiles-stolen-in-libya/

This is great, just great. Tens of thousands of anti-aircraft missiles literally just sitting around in warehouses and similar facilities. I wonder who could possibly get a hold of those? This is just one of the many, unintended consequences interventionists and neoconservatives disregard when they argue to attack another country.
