How much sex is too much sex?
When should I lay off of the sex? Should I slow down when the women lose their individual robotic identities and combine forces to become the Megazord, or is that, instead, the perfect time to finally bang that hag Rita?

in the autumn retreats stage:

if i have (for example) 7 supply centres and 7 units and i choose to disband a unit instead of retreat, will i be able to immediately (in the next stage) place it back in one of my home supply centres?

How happy are you with your ISP? My ISP, TimeWarner Cable, maxes out at 15 Mbps where I live in a major US city. What the fuck is that?

If one conspiracy theory were true, which would it be?
TC's thread gave me an idea. OK, I'm not asking for either critique or serious support of any conspiracy theories....
semck83 (229 D(B))
08 Sep 11 UTC
but if you were told that exactly ONE of the really major, common conspiracy theories was true, which would it be and why?

(To name a few, but not all: 9/11, Roswell, aliens generally, JFK, the moon landings, a small group running the world, etc., etc.)
semck83 (229 D(B))
08 Sep 11 UTC
Let me be more precise: if you were told for certain that one was true, but not which one was, which would you think it was?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

A small group running the world is true, so I'll go with that one.
semck83 (229 D(B))
08 Sep 11 UTC
Hmm, OK, sorry. I mean a small group of elite people _secretly_ running the world. My parenthetical was meant as an example list, not as an excuse to choose to put an opinion that isn't a conspiracy at all. :-P

Or maybe that's what you meant.

Elvis isn't dead, he just went home to Alpha Centauri. :-) Just kidding.

I'd have to go with JFK's assassination.
I would have to go with the illuminati conspiracy theory, and I would say that actually has about a 50-50 chance of being true.

What, exactly, about JFK?

Yeah, I'm with you Draug. I actually think there's a pretty good chance that that one's true. (i.e., that there were several people, possibly some of substantial power, involved in the JFK killing).

The idea of a second shooter. The HSCA foudn that at least four shots were fired, that there was significant evidence of a second shooter (meaning Oswald was involved in a conspiracy of some sort) and that the Warren Commission did a crappy job.

TnT 1,000,000,000+ LOL!
The whole space race in the 1960s was a propaganda fight. The Soviets tried to show they were superior by faking Yuri Gagarin's orbit of the earth. The U.S. called their bluff and raised by faking the Apollo 11 landing. The Soviets couldn't really cry foul without admitting their own fake, and were hesitant to go *really* out on a limb by raising again (like a fake landing on Mars). Since the Cold War ended, we've had very little "progress" since these fake benchmarks. Humans still have never landed on the moon.

Skylab was probably a fake too. Ooh, where is it going to land = propaganda. It's possible that the current international space station efforts are legit, but perhaps not.

Not saying it's a conspiracy at all just there is something dodgy about 9-11 something just doesn't add up
Just like Osama's death obviously doesn't add up. Something is wrong there, but attempting to pinpoint it is simply speculation, as all evidence has been destroyed.
fiedler (1293 D)
08 Sep 11 UTC
Why doesnt it add up?
Because there are at least 3 separate accounts of what happened all released by the same people which all contradict each other, with the exceptions of "Osama is dead", "we killed him" and "His body is under the ocean". For example, the building they raided changed frequently, the circumstances they killed him in changed more so.

New Worldism is by far the biggest conspiracy out there.

Apparently, so these conspiracy nutters would have us believe, there is another country far far away called the "United States" which was supposedly founded half a millenia ago by a bunch of religious lunatics in a boat and now has a population of many hundreds of millions and is responsible for all the world's ills.

Why are we fighting a war in Afganistan? The "Americans" made us do it.
Why are we have economic problems? The "Americans" cocked-up their housing market.
Why is it too bloody hot? The "Americans" are heating up the world with giant coal fires
Why is it cold and wet and stormy? The "Americans" are heating up the world with giant coal fires (bizzarely the conspiracy nuts use the same reasoning as when it's too hot).
Why are there riots in London? The "Americans" infected our youth with gangsta rap and now they've all gone crazy.
...The list is endless.

Now it's easy to pick holes in this theory due to the huge inconsistancies that New Worldists have in their beliefs. On the one hand they claim "Americans" are stupid, and yet they also claim they have developed the most advanced technology in the world. They insist that the "Americans" have by far the most powerful military force in the world, and yet claim that despite this they hardly ever do that well in wars.

Complete Tosh! How daft do they think we are???

fiedler (1293 D)

@ddshock: None of that indicates a specific conspiracy as such. Often departments within a government will give each other inaccurate information. Or people make stuff up on the spot to look clever. Thank god none of us here would ever do that.

One conspiracy theory I genuinely believe, however, is that Gillette deliberately blunt the replacement baldes of their old model razors whenever they launch a new one.

Not quite on the scale of Moon landing or Presidential assassination conspiracy theories, I admit, but in many ways more relevant to my daily life.
@fiedler: I suppose you could be right, this could just be due to the general incompetence of the people involved, but when coupled with the lack of any evidence of what any of them said actually happening, it seems a little odd.

I've always assumed that Osama died of some other cause, either disease or some random nutjob punching his number, and the US decided to take credit for it. The massive discrepancies between the reports would then be due to the agencies not ironing out the details before releasing it to the press.

An alternate theory would be that the first report is what actually happened, then the government started trying to get them to punch it up a bit more to make the american strike force sound more heroic, and Osama more of a coward.

Even the full name was a great choice - ''The Manhattan Engineering District''

It was a logical choice, it was tied with the Manhattan engineering district headquarters of the Army corps of Engineers

It seems at least possible to me that the US seriously screwed up some international war laws when they killed Osama, and disguising this fact is what led to the appearance of deceit. Just a thought.

Forcing a draw
Is currently in a gunboat game (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=65576) where the west has formed a perfect stalemate line against Turkey. However, he/she won't vote for a draw, resulting in a very prolonged game without any end. As there won't be a winner, is there a way to for example a mod to force a draw and end the game so we won't have to fill in the same orders over and over again?

Can anyone defend the idea that a "species" that diminishes its relations to another species in exchange for increased evolutionary imposition of genetic variation among lifeforms can produce life as we know it?

After cleaning my keyboard a bit too rigorously, my backspace and enter keys have stopped working. It's not too big a deal since I'm likely to get a new laptop for Christmas, but for the short term it's aggravating. How can I change some settings so that, say, my extra shift is a new enter?

I've been playing a little browser game that lets you built up a squad of soldiers and customize them in order for them to fight automatically against other opponents.
It's quite nifty overall if you get into it and only take a couple of minutes each day.
