Is Austria the best gunboat power?
Seems like it to me, or at least that it has an argument. See inside.
Germany and Russia traditionally have a lot of trouble with gunboat. France and England are strong, but they're both counterpoints to Austria, so they attract heat for Austria instead of competing. Italian players that attack Austria often trigger a Juggernaut in gunboat, so that removes Italy as a credible threat. And Austria above all has the power to keep Turkey bottled up around Bulgaria. Someone has to help Turkey out of there, the only power that would is Russia and Russia is still very easily suppressed because it is often pressured somewhere else.

Given that it's not neighbors to 2 of the 3 traditionally strongest gunboat powers in France and England, and that all of its neighbors sans Turkey are both weak at gunboat and largely unable to attack Austria or seal their own fate in doing so, and that Turkey can't escape on its own... is Austria better off in gunboat? And if so, what about gunboat makes this so?

From my humble experiences I find that Italy very often makes first year attacks on austria in gunboat which severely limits Austria's first turn growth potential. I think the idea that this invites the juggernaught is more theory than practice. In nearly every game I play turkey is way more concerned with russia than they are with sharing the map.

And a good Austrian player would know to counter the spring offensive by Italy, you just move to Venice. Either you both bounce each other, or you bounce the army from Rome moving up. I've always found luck with either Turkey or England, Austria was "ok"
diplomancer83 (123 D)

Uh I was referring to the Ven to Tyr and Rom to ven in Spr which is WAY more probable than the Spr Ven to Tri. In order to counter that Vie would have to have been bounced back from Gal and that fleet everyone sends to albania is most likely going to have to be sent supported to tri. AS ANY GOOD AUSTRIAN PLAYER KNOWS. that leaves you with one build and turkey with a great play on greece.
diplomancer83 (123 D)

and a good italian player knows to counter that move by moving everything up one to bohemia and then building their first build as an army in ven then Austria is real ugly off.
If Austria is remotely competent he'll order the Southern Hedgehog. Italy's offensive gets stymied and if Italy is smart the response is to go after France or Germany. (I find the smart move as Italy when attacking Austria in a gunboat is to order to Tyl/Ven/TYS; if Austria plays the Hedgehog, then you convoy to Tunisia and move Tyl -> Pie, turning it anti-French. Alternatively you can go for Munich!)
*sigh*

A Vie -> Gal (bounce)
A Bud -> Ser
F Tri -> Ven (bounce)

A Vie -> Tyl (bounce?)
A Ser -> Bul (bounce)
F Tri -> Ven (bounce)

That's if Italy is hostile. His offensive gets stymied and you keep Turkey from getting to +2.

If Italy is not, Tri -> Alb in fall, and you pick up Greece and Bulgaria in 1902.

I am starting to wonder if the russian auto bounce in gal is a great idea for russia. Austria actually ending up there without future plans really throws them off balance but Russia itself has little to gain from it.

I disagree with that, if Russia lets Austria take Galicia then he is essentially giving up Romania, or at least giving Austria the power to give it to Turkey instead.

Stats say France is the winningest gunboat nation...

Yeah, but do those stats cover a wide variety of gunboats or are they specific to gunboats played by pros?

I find Turkey to be the easiest...but when playing with good players...you are usually smacked down..but since the majority of people are bad kids.....I usually do well.

Enter Pres. Eden rant about how turkey sucks..
diplomancer83 (123 D)
28 Aug 11 UTC
Turkey only sucks because could players can see them win a mile away and they are by far the easiest country to stalemate. But up until that point they can be pretty beastly if they can get out of bulgaria for longer than a year.
diplomancer83 (123 D)
28 Aug 11 UTC
um good* not could players lol.
Turkey is excellent in Gunboat inasmuch as it's extremely difficult to conquer turkey and he will have a very good chance of sharing in a draw.

It's possible for turkey to be taken down by a combination of powers, but they have to work together to be able to kill him, and in Gunboat it's just too hard to make the right combination of coordinated moves - and the chances that one of the powers, like Italy or Russia, will be under attack from a different direction or betrayed by Austria is too great.
diplomancer83 (123 D)
28 Aug 11 UTC
It also doesn't hurt if you have someone on the inside every time you play.
Turkey's good in a gunboat with not-elite competition. Against good competition it's really not great because Italy almost always hitches onto the Austrian bandwagon and there's not really anything Russia, France or Germany will/can do about it.

Mods - Please pause
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=65533

Everybody in the game agreed to pause and everybody voted for it EXCEPT OZ who wrote 'good luck' to those in the storm but never put in the vote. I'm thinking he didn't know what he was supposed to do. Please pause this game until after the storms. Everyone agrees but there's only 2 hours left.

How to raport player with multiple accounts?
I am playing a world map and 2 players are in some insane-coordinated alliance. Then i notice that both players are always "last seen" in similar time with 10-20 minutes difference.
It is obvious that the player is multi-accounting. How can i rapport him to check him out?

Seven Reasons To Now Dislike Rick Perry

Really...ALL of those are HORRIBLE suggestions, each one warping the seperation of powers and the intent of those respective offices, or else is just more of the same anti-gay, anti-tax (unless it's HIS potential administration that would benefit by your taxes, of course) babble.

Bug in webdiplomacy?
In our game (after Autumn) the Austrian has to give retreat orders, although he has nowhere to retreat to ánd above he has no sc's left.

Is it possible to check if there is only one option for a retreat, process that one option and move to next phase?
