If the System Administrators can pause all the games they should be able to unpause them as well. Would you do that soon, please?

There are two players who are not checking in, and the rest of us would like to finish the game. What should we do? Is the game going to be unpaused automatically at some point?

"If you don't care for a poster's comments, are you really so fragile or else so lazy that you cannot bear to simply skip on by them? "

Yes obi, some people are that fragile, even moreso. Would you like them shot or something?
(what would nietzsche do?)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
08 Aug 11 UTC
No, I'd just like them to suck it up and take the criticism...

*I* do...I take it and respond to TC and mapleleaf and Putin and...pretty much anyone else who dislikes me or my ideas (which sometimes seems like most of the forum.) :)

What would Nietzsche do?

"That which does not kill me makes me stronger."

He'd suck it up and take it, too...the Ubermensch wasn't so fragile a writer to crawl crying to the mute button every time someone said something he didn't like...

But... they are too fragile to suck it up .... oh no! infinite dialectical loop.

Find your "If they're too fragile, too bad" file under the folder entitled "If you can't stand the shit, get out of the forum," and proceed to download it whilst being careful to scan for the Mapleleaf Spammer Virus.
fiedler (1293 D)

So, you rather people leave the forum than (god forbid) mute you?
Some people just want to play diplomacy, and read diplomacy-related threads. If they don't see your posts - how is that a problem for them?
You think they should be FORCED to read your posts? No matter how much they are NOT interested?

I think the mapleleaf virus is causing your logic-unit to short-out, or maybe your Ego code-thread is getting too much processor time?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
08 Aug 11 UTC
That's not what I meant at all...I mean, at all, that completely missed the boat.

I said "geet out of the forum," not "leave ths site."

Some folks do want to just come here, paly Diplomacy, and read Dip-related threads.
Good for them.
More power to them.
I have absolutely no problem with that.

I'm directing my comment--and I believe you to know this--at those who participate in the NON-diplomacy related threads, ie, what we would consider to be the "communicative forum" on the whole, if we can imagine there being an essential divide between the Diplomacy-related and Communicative forums.

I ALSO did not in ANY WAY personalize this in relation to myself, so your comment "So, you rather people leave the forum than (god forbid) mute you?" not only misses the mark, but misses it in such a way that the only thing it does hit is the "O" in Obi that seems to have been your bulls-eye for this entire retort.

I enver said they should be "FORCED" to read my or any other posts either...

I EVEN SAID THEY SHOULD SKIP READING WHAT THEY DISLIKE.

Really, I want to know what has sparked this, fielder...we seemed to be getting on so well, andI know you're more intelligent than this--why the blatant attack and skewering of my words?

I simply said people sould skip over what they don't like, and if they fear criticism then they shouldn't post in critical threads--how is that a reprehensible position?

(And I might note I haven't muted YOU, fiedler, I've done exactly what I advocate, respond in kind to those messges which are adressed to me, even when they are critical or, indeed, as I believe yours to be, somewhat inflammatory.

I follow through on what I advocate, and what I advocate does not seem to be an outrageous position...

And yet you seem intent on outraging me, or at least attempting to--why, fielder?

What have I done to provoke such ire?)

@kestasjk - would it be possible to add a function so we can see who we are being muted by? I think this would make understanding the threads easier for those that are being muted.

@ Obi:

The whole idea of the Übermensch was mostly that of someone's capacity to set up their own values (moral and otherwise) by the determination of their own will (what seems to assume the capacity to determine one's will alone, hence Heidegger's criticism towards Nz. of having not broken out of metaphysical prejudices).

Nietzsche would thus not be in any position to judge one who uses the mute button. Or, to be more accurate, he could certainly voice criticism and make a case against that decision, but the real Übermensch would just laugh it off instead of feeling any pressure to change his course or feel remorse. The natural power (or energies) of the clashing wills will decide in the end which will prevail.

@ Obi, - I have a grand total of one person muted. It's not because this person's posts offend me. It's because I like to participate in the political debate threads, and when I see a debate from this person, it will usually (if not always) be factually incorrect, misleading or otherwise problematic, and knowing myself, I will be unable to resist attempting to correct or otherwise refute the post. And once I do that he will never admit defeat, never back down from a position, never offer a correction, never make any kind of a concession to the general idea of a debate. And I'll be stuck in an endless argument with him, that I won't enjoy at all. Also, a tendency to create many many many threads which pushed the ones I wanted to see off the home page. And hey, guess what, kestas has provided us with a way to solve this problem. And you're saying I shouldn't use one simple tool that will help me enjoy the forums, because of Nietzsche?

"Obiwan, posts like that make me want to mute YOU. Please, one theatre person to another, can you please just try and make a post without quoting shakespeare, or making any kind of literary reference. It's so unbearably pretentious."

@Cachimbo:

I was using "Ubermensch" in that instance as an alias for Mr. Nietzsche himself, not as the term itself per se...though,. even acknowledging your point, I still say an Ubermensch wouldn't be fragile enough to care about the opinions of others to the extent he'd ahve to mute them--he'd be able t ignore them all on his own.

@Mafialligator:
have a grand total of one person muted. It's not because this person's posts offend me. It's because I like to participate in the political debate threads, and when I see a debate from this person, it will usually (if not always) be factually incorrect, misleading or otherwise problematic, and knowing myself, I will be unable to resist attempting to correct or otherwise refute the post."

Well, if the only reason you've muted him is because he gets his facts wrong, he seems easy enough to skip over and disregard...what's more, you say you won't be able to resist getting suced into the thread--but in muting the person, you would seem to clearly demonstrate you CAN, in fact, abstain from their posts...

All you've done differently with a mute is "out of sight, out of mind" thinking, but to decide to mute that person in the first place means you decided not to enter into their posts, so clearly you CAN do it... :)

"And you're saying I shouldn't use one simple tool that will help me enjoy the forums, because of Nietzsche?"

Let the record show FIELDER asked "what would nietzsche do?" not me...

And as he said he was jsut messing around with me, I must wonder--maybe assume--he knew I'd take the bait and have to deal with Nietzsche talk for the next few posts... XD

*I* didn't care to invoke Nietzsche here.
At all.
Truth be told, this is about as far away from a thread requiring Nietzsche as possible.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use a tool because of man that died over a century ago!

For one thing, that sort of martyr worship is the exact sort of thing Nietzsche HATED (hence "The Antichrist") and he even went so far as to express a fear that a prayer might be said at his funeral and that he might become a martyr if he were ever successful...he died rather unsuccessful, but maybe knowing he'd catch on later, as the foward to "The Antichrist" includes one of his msot famous quotes,

"Some men are born posthumously."

But, again--WHAT does this have to do with muting?

Nothing! :) I'm not, then, arguing that Nietzsche--of all people--should keep you from using the mute button.

I'm merely arguing common sense and courtesy should keep all from using it, as it seems unecessarily rude and, on top of that, just unnecessary...PLENTY of people who have not (yet) muted me will skip over this thread and my comments here and not care to answer...because they don't care! Or think I'm an idiot!

And that's fine!
That's great!
If I MUST use Nietzsche, the only way to respect the man's views are to challenge them!

That's why I've said time and time again I think Nietzsche's politics are confused and not logically-constructed at all!

You don't get anywhere by muting those you dislike and only hearing what you like...that's why Nietzsche encouraged people in his books to think for themselves and NOT take what he says as being the truth of the matter all the time...

There are a lot of people on the site I get into arguments with...how boring would it be if they all just assumed *I* was right, and muted everyone who dared challenge my position? I'd never get the chance to grow as a debater or thinker or writer, they'd enver get the chance to argue for their own position or weigh different positions against one another, and everything would be stagnant and dull.

How to restart games? Unpause?
I am thankful that the server has underhgone improvements, my thanks and congratulations to all who helped out.

In order to restart these games, does every player need to hit "unpause", or will the games unpause automatically once the details of swapping servers are cleared up?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Chekhov and Plato Play a String Duet
In his dialogue "Phaedo," Plato's representation of Socrates makes the argument for a human "soul," and states that it's somewhat like a harmony from a harp, that is, representative and yet beyond the actual harp itself. In his short story "Ward No. 6," Chekhov's protagonist, Andrey Yefimitch, muses aloud that a broken violin, far from still being represented by a harmony, is just a heap of rubbish, as it's purely physical, so once broken, that's it. Which maestro's song's truer?
