@Cachimbo:
I was using "Ubermensch" in that instance as an alias for Mr. Nietzsche himself, not as the term itself per se...though,. even acknowledging your point, I still say an Ubermensch wouldn't be fragile enough to care about the opinions of others to the extent he'd ahve to mute them--he'd be able t ignore them all on his own.
@Mafialligator:
have a grand total of one person muted. It's not because this person's posts offend me. It's because I like to participate in the political debate threads, and when I see a debate from this person, it will usually (if not always) be factually incorrect, misleading or otherwise problematic, and knowing myself, I will be unable to resist attempting to correct or otherwise refute the post."
Well, if the only reason you've muted him is because he gets his facts wrong, he seems easy enough to skip over and disregard...what's more, you say you won't be able to resist getting suced into the thread--but in muting the person, you would seem to clearly demonstrate you CAN, in fact, abstain from their posts...
All you've done differently with a mute is "out of sight, out of mind" thinking, but to decide to mute that person in the first place means you decided not to enter into their posts, so clearly you CAN do it... :)
"And you're saying I shouldn't use one simple tool that will help me enjoy the forums, because of Nietzsche?"
Let the record show FIELDER asked "what would nietzsche do?" not me...
And as he said he was jsut messing around with me, I must wonder--maybe assume--he knew I'd take the bait and have to deal with Nietzsche talk for the next few posts... XD
*I* didn't care to invoke Nietzsche here.
At all.
Truth be told, this is about as far away from a thread requiring Nietzsche as possible.
I'm not saying you shouldn't use a tool because of man that died over a century ago!
For one thing, that sort of martyr worship is the exact sort of thing Nietzsche HATED (hence "The Antichrist") and he even went so far as to express a fear that a prayer might be said at his funeral and that he might become a martyr if he were ever successful...he died rather unsuccessful, but maybe knowing he'd catch on later, as the foward to "The Antichrist" includes one of his msot famous quotes,
"Some men are born posthumously."
But, again--WHAT does this have to do with muting?
Nothing! :) I'm not, then, arguing that Nietzsche--of all people--should keep you from using the mute button.
I'm merely arguing common sense and courtesy should keep all from using it, as it seems unecessarily rude and, on top of that, just unnecessary...PLENTY of people who have not (yet) muted me will skip over this thread and my comments here and not care to answer...because they don't care! Or think I'm an idiot!
And that's fine!
That's great!
If I MUST use Nietzsche, the only way to respect the man's views are to challenge them!
That's why I've said time and time again I think Nietzsche's politics are confused and not logically-constructed at all!
You don't get anywhere by muting those you dislike and only hearing what you like...that's why Nietzsche encouraged people in his books to think for themselves and NOT take what he says as being the truth of the matter all the time...
There are a lot of people on the site I get into arguments with...how boring would it be if they all just assumed *I* was right, and muted everyone who dared challenge my position? I'd never get the chance to grow as a debater or thinker or writer, they'd enver get the chance to argue for their own position or weigh different positions against one another, and everything would be stagnant and dull.
