Pregame: I hope I get Turkey. Or Italy. Haven’t played either of those in a long time. I’m also going to make an attempt to be a bit funnier here, as Eden inspired me to do, but it may or may not be met with utter failure.
S01: Turkey! Woo. I really don’t like Juggernauts in gunboat, but I’ll play it for now. Maybe Italy will turn on Austria, and then I can attack Russia. Pretty standard opening, Bla, Con, Bul. Everyone’s got orders in except England. Hope he doesn’t NMR. That would be… unfortunate.
A01: Well, it looks like the jolly Englishman has left us. Means I’ll likely have to go after Russia so that he doesn’t grow too much in the north. Failed support by Mun for Par > Bur. Interesting. Very rare you see France not make that move. Almost would have expected Par > Pic though with the English NMR. Will try to bounce Russia out of Rum, since he’s likely to get Norway eventually. Interesting move by the Italian too – not often you see an opening to Tyrr. I wonder how France will take that. And if that means that Italy will be leaving Austria alone. Whoops. Forgot to put up my draw/cancel votes for the CD. They’re up now. France and Italy still haven’t put them up though.
Builds: Glad to see the Italian stab – he and I could be good friends. I’ll leave Austria alone to deal with him for now though. I think F Ank is the way to play this. I’m confused by the Austrian move to Vie though: Was that a misorder? Will have pretty bad consequences for him, I think. Hope to see a Russian build on St. P NC.
S02: Strange, strange builds. Russia looks like he wants to send everything my way, and France isn’t even bothering to get fleets. Wish Italy and France would cancel instead of wasting our time. But I do like Italy’s armies. That doesn’t signal peace with Russia in the long run.
A02: Well, interesting moves again. Germany looks set to take Warsaw, Austria retakes Trieste, but will let him retreat to Vie, which might not net him anything. No surprise with Russia forcing me out of Bla, but I have no problem with that. Hopefully Germany’s aggression will force Russia to back off here and I can grow some next year. I hope France doesn’t attack Germany – I want Germany to grow so that he can take out Russia with me.
Builds: Well good turn for me. Hope Russia’s disband is Bla, but it won’t buy him peace if it is. My guess is that it’s GoB. But I still hope it doesn’t buy him peace with Germany. :-P And come on, G/R, do we really need to take 5 minutes for the build phase?
S03: Well, looks like I’ll dally around another year waiting for Germany to kill Russia. Germany’s growth is explosive – there’s no doubt he’s the solo threat. And there’s no doubt it’s because of a CD England and a non-aggressive France. Suspect Germany is jmyers. Guess is that Russia is Riphen. Those are the only two in the game that I know of. Will want to see who France and Italy are, because I’m kind of angry at them – no reason not to cancel or draw with a CD.
A03: Really, Germany? SH Ukr? :-( I’d try to make peace with Russia, but there’s no point – with two southern fleets, we *can’t* be allies. So I’m resigned to just sitting here bouncing his fleet over and over. Maybe I’ll get some Austrian help sometime. Or just sit here for forever… In other news, England returned to the game… That was polite of him. Oh wait, not it wasn’t. He’s just going to not issue orders whilst making us wait 10 minutes. Top notch manners, good chap.
Builds: Lucky guess by Italy – although I’m confused as to why Germany would SH War instead of covering Mun.
S04: Well, I’m going to try trusting Russia here. I’ve got to stop dallying around at 4 SC’s here if I want to remain in the game. Gland Italy doesn’t have another fleet, and that Austria is all armies, but without assistance from someone else, I can’t force Russia back. Plus my moves will let me move Smy > Arm if I want to, and force Bla that way. And seriously, bro? What’s up with not issuing ANY orders ANY turn, England? You’re still checking the game or you would CD. That’s just an asshole thing to do, sorry.
A04: Well go figure, the turn I signal peace to Russia, Austria helps out. I think I’ll move Smy > Arm and support Austria to Rum from Ser. If all works out, I should start making progress soon. I just hope Austria doesn’t misread this. This is getting boring though. I’m putting on Star Trek. Such a good movie. (The 2009 one.)
Builds: I don’t know *what* Italy is doing. He could have held Venice if he wanted to, it appears as though he just didn’t give a shit though. And this soundtrack is fantastic. “You’re captain now, Mr. Kirk.” *Sigh*. It looks like Russia is no longer interested in playing too. Maybe that’s Riphen and zultar trying to work out the sitting… Well, I think I’m going to have to trust Austria right now. After I get into Black, I might be able to turn on Austria, but we’ll see.
A05: Thanks for the support Austria. Just guaranteed I’ll go for Sev and not Rum this turn. :-) “Is there a problem officer?” “Citizen, what is your name?” “My name is James Tiberius Kirk”. Epic. And who doesn’t love teenager Spock beating the shit out of some bullies? Whoops! Didn’t notice I hadn’t finalized, sorry guys.
Builds: Army here. I’ll move to Ukr and convoy it to Sev. “Maybe you can’t count, but there are four of us and one of you.” “So go get some more guys and then it’ll be an even fight.” … “Your father was captain of a starship for 12 minutes and saved 800 lives, including your mother’s and your’s. I dare you to do better.” God, I love this movie.
S06: Playing for Rum. Just realized that my army build signals war to Austria. But oh well. We’ll see how this goes. The Kobayashi Maru is probably my favorite scene in this movie. So epic. “Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them.” “Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them … captain.”
Well I guess F/I CDed… at the same time? … Suspicious.
S 01: alright, germany again. I can handle that. Won with the G-man yesterday (wow, I play way too much on this site), and I see no need to change a winning formula. Support PAR-BUR to get a nice F/G going early. Decide on SWE in fall, but inclination is to support R in to pile up on the englishman. England, you better get orders in! No? well, I’ll still offer friendship to France – he’d have the advantage in a f/g war without England.
F 01: oh england, you rotter. Well that spoils it. Cancel vote up. come on, people! Will bounce R if don’t cancel as no longer need his support. Nice moves from france. Won’t move mun toward bel as I expect f to take with ec. Can poise for moves to sil/pru next spring since russia will hopefully be my biggest threat with no E and friendly F. I’m confident I can mop up scandinavia and russia quickly before f becomes big problem.
B 01: very good moves from france. It might take him a while to cash in on England, which I need. It will really be a race between me and him to see who expands fastest – the winner will be able to destroy the other. A lot will depend on russia’s build. Stp would be bad for me, but I have little hope it won’t be. Strange boh move from aus… glad t is showing anti-russian.
S 02: hmmm… not at all sure what I think of F’s builds. I’d have expected a fleet to go after England, and those armies aren’t really non-threatening. But I can see how they might be seen as friendly – fleets would certainly pose a threat, too. Also, I guess he’s thinking his por build this year will provide any fleets necessary. Glad r didn’t build stp, but it was a misktake, imho. Will follow through russian assault. Hol-Ruh should be enough to cover things back home. And seriously guys, why arent we canceling?
F 02: well, not exactly friendly from france. Gotta take a chance on it, though. Probably they were defensive moves. Also, it’s a lot to risk from him when I might just pull sil back. I think he’ll convooy to wales. Russia is manhandling turkey down south, so I’m glad I’m getting warsaw. Important to be the first to break g/r peace. Will get build even if lose hol to france, which is good, and nth/nor will be mine next year. Take swe from den as can’t have russia in bal. cover mun not hol as aus may try for it too. + war is past stalemate line long-term
B 02: really hope russia disbands the fleet, and he very well might. Russian threat has been completely neutralized, and france has an army stuck in portugal. If I build a fleet now, I’ll have the naval supremacy. I’ve already won the race, I think. Best to leave r to hold off t and switch to france while I have the initiative. Fleet k army ber lets me get ruh, hol, mun now, hopefully. Fleet build is a bit of a giveaway but so be it.
S 03: good builds. If france tries for lon from ec so as to keep wal in position to get lvp, I might even get bel this year. Long shot, though. Anyway, will certainly get norway and nth. Will let Russia hold T for a bit, signal support with warsaw. Keep sil in place in case R goes after war, but can hold it indefinitely. I like the way the east is just picking non-conclusive fights. Whoever comes out on top between me and f will have good solo prospects if continues. And I’m already past stalemate.
F 03: touche, france. Well called. Hope italy switches focus to france; that would be a game-changer. And the aus campaign is going nowhere. Will try for bur and hol. Guaranteed one. May not get nth but will next year. It’d be nice if pie stalls that spa army in mar.
B 03: oh for goodness’ sake, italy. I’ve lost faith in your skills now. Do you really think that’s doing anything in the long-run? Messes me up royally, though. And france didn’t cover MAR!??? craziness. Wonder if they’re multi’s? bet they are.
S 04: seiously though, why isn’t this canceled? Anyway, I could retake mun and cover kie-ber, but I don’t want to. I’d lose too much ititiative with France. He’s the bigger threat. I won’t pull bur out. Let him bounce it if he dares. Clearly there’s no going back with france, now, will just have to rely on my tactical acumen to win the day. Bur-mar in case he tries to go to par/gas/mar/pic and ruh-bel cut support ec. Sil-mun to make sure italy doesn’t gain an sc. Nor-nwg to try and steal a edi builds. Risks nth but france can’t take without relinquishing lvp for now, and I don’t think he will.
F 04: well, I was wrong, but france is losing umm.. two units, so I’ll take the trade. Clearly inexperienced leaving mar open like that. That being the case, I’ll take a chance and go for glory here. Cut nth and bur and hol bel. If all goes well I’ll hold mar and bel and force two disbands. Of course, if all goes badly I’ll lose both, but that would require very astute moves from france that quite frankly I think are beyond him. I like austria’s moves, a lot. Of course by moving sil-mun I run the risk of having only one spott to build. And if f wanted to be mean he would move bur-mun, but again I don’t think I have to worry about that. Could cut pie for aus but run the risk of pie-tyl and losing mar.
B 04: france’s disbands will be HUGE here. With my two builds I can get rid of that pesky munich, huzzah, but now I worry about the size of austria, who I suspect is smiley. A formiddable opponent when the time comes. Russia better not bail on us… btw, if we get to 06 I’m taking back my cancel vote. Fleet kiel to cover stuff from nth. If italy is feeling remnorseful he’ll disband mun, but I doubt he will. If he did, though, I’d be tempted to let him keep it for now to fight aus.
S 05: you wazzerk italy. That was absolutely the worst possible idea. If he holds mun and italy doesn’t cut (I wouldn’t in his shoes) that would be seriously annoying. i/r seem on a quest to throw this to a. will try for spa to increase chance of getting french build. Don’t want to force nth yet to prevent spring retreat, but will cut to make sure can’t get edi without giving it up. Can’t move kie to prevent mun retreat.
F 05: well, france has edi, but the positional battle is definitively won. Ec is mine. It was a mistake to disband the second fleet, france. If I’m lucky I’ll get bur now, too. It’s all over but the crying. Thx italy for not messing me up, again.
B 05: for the record italy, I don’t like you france, don’t know why you didn’t cover london, but maybe I should have guessed considering you didn’t cover marseilles earlier. Russia is not long for this world, but I must be wary of stp-nor at some point. Need an army to go to MUN while Mun does stuff, I guess. Berlin not kie in case it needs to go east for whatever reason.
S 06: as promised, cancel off the table. And frickity frickity frick frick frick france! Don’t do this too me. No way I cancel if france goes. Draw to see who was who. Which is frustrating because I actually believe I had a very, very good chance at a solo if france had stayed. In fact I’m almost positive I would have won. Wonder what the thics commission would say on this?
F 06: and f/I cd simultaneosly, confirming my thought re: multi’s.
EOG: hummmm, Italy was a bad player and that was the only reason I did okay. Turkey, you little bastard. I helped you into Sevas and what did you do? Build a damn army in Con, which forced my hand to attack you. Thanks for being such a courteous player and draw, jmeyersd. You would have gotten the solo easily. This is a different message. Let me post you stupid website.
"5. The Pause/Unpause feature is not a diplomatic tool The pause is there to stop players missing their orders, but is not part of the game. Bug in the "Threads/Replies" part of a players profile
I'm assuming others have noticed this, but if you haven't, it takes awhile for a thread or reply to actually appear there. And if you have too many, the page will crash. Does anyone know what governs this behavior? As best I can tell, the number of posts missing is somewhat proportional to the number of posts you've made.
I played diplomacy with a group of freinds and found it to be very different then on web diplomacy not only beacues of the obviose things but in how peaople were more willing to launch venndetas against people has anyone else had this happen?
http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/07/08/graphic-the-last-shuttle-launch/ So, with NASA's final space shuttle launch today, where does that leave the US (and international space program)? Is this even something to be sad about or should we be focusing our cash-money elsewhere, anyways?
I've been following lately everything that has being going on there and I was wondering if history is going to repeat itself as, quoting one of my friends 'divorce often leads to even greater poverty and woe'. Indeed, being Africa, some argue that harping on “blood of martyrs” they'd better prepare for tribal violence and government corruption.
Wow - cool Dip tournament in Indianapolis... Aug 4-7
"Gen Con Indy is the original, longest running, best attended, gaming convention in the world. For nearly 40 years, Gen Con Indy has been setting the trend and breaking records. Last year, more than 26,000 unique attendees experienced Gen Con Indy."
So I got this question: I may be fairly new to this game, but I read up a lot and have a few games under my belt. But as far as I understand, stabbing is an integral part of this game, right? But still I get players with lots (LOTS) of games finished really bitching (and I mean bad 4-letter words here) at me for stabbing them. Is it them or me? What are your thoughts?
Corisca is a French territory, but is colored according to whoever holds an Italian territory (Tuscany I think?) when it should be the color of whichever power controls holds Marseille. Whereas Sardinia is Italian and never changes color (and neither does Crete). Meanwhile Iceland changes color based on whoever owns Clyde instead of the more logical Denmark or Norway. These questions going unanswered hinders my ability to play Diplomacy and function normally in day to day life.
Its what I get every time I talked about history with my students, I nodded in support but I really wanted to tear my hair out. Are there truly lessons from the past or are those "lessons" merely the result of hindsight?
