Does anybody recognise the film this comes from?
I saw this in a film long ago and, being the father of daughters, decided to remember it, but I can't remember which film it's from. Does anybody recognise it?

Scene:Man meeting daughter's new boyfriend for the first time:-
"Remember this: I own a shotgun and a shovel and there's 300 acres of woodland behind the house... soft, loamy, soil... rich, earthy, smells..."

What to do when detecting cheater in anonymous/no ingame message games?
I just want to know how to handle if 2 team players join a anonymous/no-ingame message game.

Is there any way to prevent people doing such stupid things or are there any consequences for them?

You need to click the "Ready" button, not just the "Save" button for the game to progress. You are slowing up the whole game unnecessarily.

Any statistical wizards here?
I've always been poor at methods. I'm trying to analyze a pooled time series of various countries to see the effects of war/militarized disputes on state strength (as measured by taxation, institutional 'coherence', military spending, military personnel and some other factors). Any clue as to how to do to do a panel-corrected standard error procedure on a program like R or Stata?

Variant Elimination Game
Each round, add one point to your favorite variant, and subtract one from your least favorite. When a variant runs out of points, it's eliminated. When you post, put a (+1) and a (-1) next to the ones you change, so it's easier to follow.

What are you reading at the moment?
I just finished reading "Why the west rules for now" by Ian Morris. And now (continuing with the theme of historical determinism) I am about to start "The next 100 years" by George Freeman. He predicts Poland, Turkey and Japan will become super-powers (and maybe Mexico also).

By special request - The strategy questions thread.
Go ahead and ask. I won't necessarily answer as there are many here better then me, and if I do I don't offer any warranty, express or implied, as to the results of my suggested strategies. Caveat Emptor, YMMV, etc.

This man and his girlfriend were dating for a few years and he finally decided it was time to ask her to be his wife. He wasn't sure if her family would approve of it because he never met them but he took her out to a really nice restraunt and asked her anyway. She said yes and they began planning the wedding immediately.

Several months pass and about a week before their wedding he finally got to meet her family. He thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world...until he saw her sister! Her sister made his soon to be wife look mediocre.

The night before the wedding the man goes over to his fiances sisters house to have dinner with the family. When he gets there his fiances sister is the only one there and is dressed in a very skimpy maid outfit and attempts to seduce him. She tells him that she'll be waiting upstairs in her bed and he just stands there stunned for a second. He looked back out the front door and quietly closes the door then goes up the stairs. He walks all the way up to her bedroom and is about to open the door and go in, then he just turned around and bolted down the stairs, out the front door, and into his car. Soon as he sits down in his car his fiances parents comes out of the house clapping and cheering and goes to him and says "Congrats! You passed the test, now we can approve of you to marry our daughter!" A little bit stunned to see them he just smiles and the next day he marries his fiance.

Moral of the story: dont keep your condoms in your wallet, put them in the glovebox

So in terms of strategy, what do you recommend are the best moves to get to 3rd base? I think I usually tend to move too quickly, making it to 2nd quickly enough and hoping to keep the momentum going, trying to beat those defenses. However, I'm torn to pieces at the final hurdle and can never secure the victory. Would you recommend a more Trojan horse approach? Something more subtle?

wonderful story :))))))))))))

So, a guy goes to visit a friend from college, ten years have passed, they now live in different towns, both married. In the evening they go out in a bar, and the 'visitor' starts looking around and trying to pick up some ladies. The host is somewhat surprised, but they haven't seen each-other in a long time, maybe his marriage sucks...

Few weeks pass and now the other friend decides to visit. To his shock, the wife looks simply stunning. She's also nice, smart, takes good care of the home, and is a brilliant cook. Everything about her seems perfect. They sit to have dinner and, after having their favorite lamb chops the now visiting friend asks his host "WTF are you doing cheating on your wife, she's the best?" to which the other responds "wait for a week and you'll see".

As the week goes by, an odd thing happens, the loved lamb is being served every day, it's the only thing to eat actually. It's as good as always... but every day? Then, on the last day of the visit, suddenly there's bean soup - as plain as it gets. Then, when the friends are about to part, the host says "I askedy wife to make lamb every day, so now you know, even having the best meal you can imagine every day gets boring, from time to time you need something different, be it just beans"

I'm not sure about the moral of the story... just that my wife hates it when I tell it :)

We have a saying 'round these parts. Just because I'm on a diet doesn't mean I can't read the menu. I only wish I were blind so I could read it in braille. :-)
SacredDigits (102 D)

We always say, "Just because I've already ordered doesn't mean I can't look at the menu." Which is close, but not quite.

Here's an actual Diplomacy strategy question. Usually, I try to think of things in terms of the big stalemate line when looking for victory, the St Pete's to North Africa one. 17 SC's on one side, and picking up one on the other. This doesn't always work out: in my few wins, I usually have about 3 on one side, 15 on the other. Austria and Turkey definitely thrive on the south of the line stuff, France, England, and Germany north of the line, but it seems to me that both Italy and Russia can more or less ignore the line entirely. And Russia pretty much has to. France and Germany also CAN head south of the line, but north is usually the more successful path.

Thoughts? Do you consider this line at all? Or is it just something I'm using to limit myself? And specifically, what places do you think Russia needs to hit to win? I think Scandinavia, Germany, and Rumania are all part of the mix.

Ivo, every guy understqnds the story...but you actually tell this story IN FRONT of your WIFE?

Do you think it's a tad embarrassing for her? Why so subtle, why don't you just announce in a loud voice in front of all her friends "i love her but I like to fuck around"/

Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

I've never told this story when both my wife and another person are around. I've also never cheated to my wife, and vice-versa. It's a joke, my wife matches the description, so I tease her. This here us a forum, so also can't see the problem. Piss off to lecture somewhere else.

SD: I very much think about the line, as every power. I think it's more important for Austria, Turkey, and England though, as they have a much harder time pushing through it.
fuzzyhartle1 (100 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
i think the only way not to use the line is in the invasion of italy but russia has an advangate over italy. russia starts with a stalmate line almost set but has no conection to the med. italy starts right were he can move but come to atack earily so i like italy more for acecs to the med witch sea power is the only way around a stalemate

Can a mod please check the webdipmod email?
I have sent a multi accusation there that needs swift action. The cheating is so obvious by the players' names, but the turn runs soon and I don't want the game destroyed by a cheat. I'm doing too well in it.
