Dinner For Schmucks

For my english class this semester Film As Literature we have to bring in a movie for our class to view and teach for an hour (movie viewing time not included) and we need to answer the question "What do you want the audience to get from this film, think about because of viewing this film, or do because of watching this film."
My group chose the movie dinner for schmucks and i was just wondering what the webdip community thought of this movie and if they can think of any messages the movie teaches us. I came up with 3 so far but i want to here what other people have to say before i say what i thought of to see if other people got the same lessons.

uhhhhh...I give up. What *do* you want the audience to get from "Dinner for Schmucks?" : )

the lessons i have so far are
1. communication and trust are key in relationships
2. Don't Judge people, everyone is unique
3. Be the bigger person, do what you believe is right

Although, if you're having trouble finding ideas - why did you pick this movie, Maltizok?

i loved the movie and wanted my class to see it, the teacher said that it would be hard to teach but possible so i accepted the challenge. im mostly just looking for other peoples opinions on the movie and what they got out of it. any possible ideas for activities that would go well with the movie would also help.
Something I'd do is decide first what you want to teach the class, and hen ask how you're going to know that they learned it. If you give me some idea of what you will teach (themes, archtypes, stereotypes, plot devices, etc.) I'll try to give you some ideas.

well what i want them to get from the movie is the lessons i posted earlier, so far for activities all i have is getting a class star rating on the movie and a class discussion where we talk about the lessons and the movie in general. i plan on making a few worksheets but i still need to come up with questions for those and a general idea of what to talk about in the class discussion.
Can you find some short scripts in which a character (or characters) are made the butt of jokes (kind of like "Flowers for Algernon"). Perhaps begin with the question "Is it a natural impulse to laugh at those we think are less intelligent?". That might give you a springboard for a discussion before the viewing if that is allowed.
I think one of the key questions the movie asks would be "Who are the true fools?"
It contrasts the Scmucks with the true Schmucks who are jumping through hoops to brown nose the boss. The protagonist just shows the conflict. He hates the idea of the dinner but sees it as the only way to succeed. In pursuing it he almost loses everything that would make him truly successful.

yes thats allowed, we can use that hour of class time before, in the middle, or after the movie. Thats a good idea crazy and i think i will be able to use that, my main concern with that is i would either give away something in the movie or influence the students opinion of a character in a different way so im not sure if that discussion would be good before the movie.
You're probably right about that. A starting question after the movie might be "Which character did you identify with most closely? Was there a character that you identified with but wish you hadn't?"

thats good, kind of like a which character are you thing from facebook.

1) Steve Carell is funny when his writers aren't.
2) There's little emotional pain from watching a bad movie when it only costs a dollar.
3) The emotional pain is magnified if you forget to return the movie and end up buying it for $25.

I havent seen the movie. Actually I have the original french version on my HD but have yet to watch. But since the premise is fairly obvious, a fun question might be: "Do you consider yourself to be a smuck? On a scale of 1 to 10, how smucky are you?
You could get all metaphysical and observe that the difference between a smuck and a non-smuck is only perceptual opinion. Anyone can be humiliated and made fun of, if you can convince someone they are better or worse than someone else.
