Political Blog
Hello All! I was browsing the web the other day and found a great blog. It seems to have a slightly progressive/liberal bent. Follow the link below...

Other Board Game sites
In my day, I have seen about 50 different sites for diplomacy or Risk. I was wondering if there were any other board game sites set up similar to this one.

"Huck Finn" Gets a Re-Write...AND THAT AIN'T RIGHT!

So...not ONLY is this editing one of THE great novels of all-time, arguably THE definitive "Great American Novel," but I guess racism just never occured...the N-word and Native American slurs never happened, eh?

Android is a cool OS...
This new Droid X has the coolest new way to type called swype. You just slide your finger across the keys and it figures out the word from its dictionary. It's really quite good. Got a double letter? Just rub your finger over it before continuing and it will register the double so it knows god and good are different words. I just swyped this entire message.

WebDiplomacy: The Movie!
Yes, it's official: Hollywood is so bankrupt for ideas and has sucked every sequel and franchise and reboot of previous franchises totally dry, so there WILL be a WebDiplomacy feature film!

What should the plot of this epic be, who should direct...and which actors, past and present (because Hollywood stars never die, they just show up on Netflix) should portray each of us? ;)

Diplomacy board (map)
Who has a scanned or other form of Diplomacy board (map)?
I am willing to craft a big board game. Can you help me please?

I recommend this one:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/2/2a/20090424211747!Europe_1911.jpg

It's a real map of Europe from 1911 and works almost perfectly for Diplomacy. It's also pretty big.

Thanks.
I was thinking about the real Diplomacy board scan. It looks more common for me on a table board.
I found one here, but it's too small for a big table board:

I know what you wanted, but, imho, if you're going to make your own board, you might as well make it as bad-ass as possible.

How about our own large map:

Here is another very nice period map

This might help

The PDF files should scale alright, I think. I would also recommend looking for SVG-based maps.

You might look at www.diplom.org. I think there is a full collection of maps.

i especially like how europe 1914 has Illinois in the corner for size comparison...
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

Or you could just, you know, buy a copy of the game?
damian (675 D)
07 Jan 11 UTC
Because the current copy of the game as published by WotC sucks. The quality of it is so low for what they charge for it.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
07 Jan 11 UTC
i'd agree, excepting that the old map which you posted is just as crappy as the current one (the old metal pieces are much cooler than the current cardboard bits or current wooden pieces...) so while i don't think much of the pieces, the board is just a poor as ever...
damian (675 D)

Honestly I was happy with the old wooden blocks. unfortunately they don't offer them anymore.

The version I played having been years old of course. One of the first printings. The current cardboard junk though is just pathetic. Though plastic would be just as bad or worse.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I love games with wooden blocks. I have the 1st or 2nd printing of both RISK! and Diplomacy and they both use the blocks. Metal soldiers are just for people with low attention spans : )

@Orathaic

Yeah, because American's don't understand anything unless it's compared to the landmass of Illinois : )
SacredDigits (102 D)

Illinois is so random that it rules. Hard.

I like wooden pieces for games, I dunno, I guess I'm strange like that. I have wooden pieces for Monopoly, Settlers, Scrabble, and Risk. All far superior to the plastic versions.

Actually, I'm not positive Settlers ever came out with a plastic pieces set, but definitely superior to plastic in the other ones.
lkruijsw (100 D)
07 Jan 11 UTC
Settlers is German. You will hardly see any German game with plastic pieces. Wood is very traditional in German. You might also try to order some wooden pieces on the Internet. There are shops that sell game pieces for people that want to make their own game. The shops are often German but also have an English site.

People always say the latest edition of Diplomacy is shit. Does anyone have pictures? I am curious. What is wrong with it? Are the pieces really made of cardboard? How about the board. Is that bad too?
I once bought a star wars edition of Risk and its board was very poor quality. It wasn't the special, extra hard cardboard one normally sees but rather just ordinary thin glossy cardboard (more like packaging material). Is the latest diplomacy set like that?
damian (675 D)
07 Jan 11 UTC
The board is well built enough I suppose. But the pieces are junk. The pieces are really made of cardboard with pictures of boats and tanks on them.

Sorry to say I don't have pictures of it but I have used my friends version of the new board game and the pieces felt like garbage.

Well it isn't the best image here you go. Look at the pieces on the board. http://www.wizards.com/global/images/ah_prod_diplomacy_pic3_en.jpg

I see. The board looks okay but the cardboard pieces are very disappointing. Jeez, that is cheap. They could have at least come with plastic pieces.
I have the 2000 edition with the metal pieces. It is a nice set, but the nicest set is the Avalon Hill set (a friend of mine had one in the eighties - it was a bookcase edition).
Onar (131 D)

I have the cardboard set, and frankly, I don't like it, either. The metal pieces were my favourites, as that was what I first played on, but I'm growing into liking the wooden ones, too. (although, I can say that the map, while odd, is really nice... big, but the territories are all differently shaped)
lkruijsw (100 D)

For wooden pieces you can look here:
http://www.spielmaterial.de/english5/
For Diplomacy, Pawns & Other Figures:
Transports: Junk Ship small
Persons: Backpackers / Soldiers

Unfortunate, it is only in 5 colors.
But if you contact them and you explain the situation, they might want to make
special Diplomacy sets. If we put a link on this site.

In high school, my friend lost the pieces, so we used pennies, with one side painted with an A and an F on the other. It was ugly, but it was better than chintzy plastic or cardboard.

I am actually thinking of using a projector to display the map on a white wall for my next FtF game.

I wanted to build a table with a large one once, and have it sunk in, and the game master uses one of those wooden rods that they use to collect craps bets with to move the armies and fleets, but I decided that it would be so big that my wife might beat me if it didn't get used a lot.
