Holiday Book advice, I need a good Ancient History overview
Exactly what the title says, I aways finish fiction books too quick while lounging poolside in the holidays, What I would like is a big history book, Id like to expand my knowledge of the ancient world, the persians, greeks, chinese and so on up to the mongols, maybe 3000bc to 1300ad or so. Could it all be contained in one glorious book? any advice?

Not all players bet the same amount
Why not all the players bet always the same amount of points?
For example here http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=42145 Everyone bets 10 but russia (11) and austria (17). Why is this so?

lets get rid of draws
there should be a game mode that is PPSC but no draws. i am sick of people going into games with the idea that there will be a 2-3 person draw from the start. the only way a draw in these game should be initiated is if there are no advancements from any side able an admin or whatever can assess the game and make sure it is actually draw, otherwise itd be cancelled

Firstly, is that really a fair use of an admins time? I'm pretty sure they have better things to do than having to draw every game that people feel has finished.

However, more to the point, suppose this happened. All it would do is encourage people to play for second place and take the points.
Ernst_Brenner (743 D)

There could be a special new position for volunteers: "stalemate checker"
figlesquidge (2131 D)
28 Nov 10 UTC
But how would they know?
You could end up with 4 nations, two on each side of a stalemate line. Each man would then be able to fight with his neighbour without breaking the stalemate line, and thus the game might not be finished. However, were he to do so, he would risk the two on the other side wiping them out. Would this be a stalemate?

idk i havent thought anything through but there are players who go into a game and say LOL LETS DRAW K? and i am so sick of players who think that way
BuddyBoy (147 D)

I fill the same way about all these games ending in DRAWS! I figured this was the reason for WTA games, but they still call for draws in them too.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 10 UTC
So you shoot of your virtual mouth without thinking it through... Why don't you just build a list of players you will and/or won't play with rather than putting more work on the volunteer mods of a free website developed and run by a fan of the game who makes nothing off it?
The Czech (41529 D(S))
28 Nov 10 UTC
I'll one up you Draug, let him go somewhere else and play if he doesn't like the "DRAW" option. What a whiner.
BuddyBoy (147 D)
28 Nov 10 UTC
I hope your not talking about me. I like the draw option, but think it should not be in the WTA games.
The Czech (41529 D(S))

BuddyBoy survive in a WTA game and don't hit draw. Problem solved. And no, I wasn't referring to you.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 10 UTC
No, we were talking about the OP's comments.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 10 UTC
And BuddyBoy, you'll find more draws in WTA because strong second gets you nothing, but those draws have a higher probability of being legit 3 or 4 way draws where a stab would cost the stabber and the stabbie the game.
BunnYHopS (497 D)
28 Nov 10 UTC
is the forum not a place to suggest things to better the system of the game? ye i dont know the answer to what i suggested hense talking about it on a forum where others could input. grats on being narrow minded
Daiichi (100 D)
28 Nov 10 UTC
Actually i'm okay with the draw, but it causes that a lot of times people think of doing a three-way alliance right to the end and then draw the game.
In fact, it can cause that eventually all the games will be determined by who are the first 4 player to reach an agreement, crush the other 3, and hit draw. And i'm not okay with that.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 10 UTC
It's not what you suggest but your whiny ass way of suggesting it.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
28 Nov 10 UTC
Originally, every game on the site was like that (well, except that there were no draws -- not even mod-forced ones.) Having tried both systems, I think the current one is a bit better. Carebear alliances are part of the game. Deal.
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))
28 Nov 10 UTC
Bunny, it opens up a new world for you. Step 1: open up every game with an email to every other player saying "LOL Let's Draw, K?" . When they accept, take it to the point where the opposition is crushed....and then stab your partner. Problem solved.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

my obligatory comment whenever anyone demands a system change:

"It sounds like a great idea! When will you be finished coding it?"

If it's important enough to bitch about, after all, it's important enough for you to take the time to code it. If you don't know how to code, I guess a first step would be to learn to code.

If it's important enough for *someone else* to do it, but not important enough for you to do it, it isn't important.

Lets get rid of the WINS.

There should be a game mode that is PPSC but no WINS. I am sick of people going into games with the idea that there will be a SINGLE WINNER from the start... Etc.

Lets elect a government that sees all these problems, and so goes round removing every opportunity for healthy competition or challenges and removes them before anyone could risk getting annoyed. Also, just to be on the safe side, lets extend health and safety law such that companies are so scared of getting sued you can't do anything else either.
</scarcasm>

I'm confused. The OP wants to basically make it against the rules to form game-long alliances - or in other words, it should be a rule that you must stab your allies at some point. Also, don't draws only happen if everyone still alive agrees to it? If you're out of a game, what do you care if the survivors declare a draw?

The draw proposals that really bother me are the ones where everyone who's not winning votes draw even though there's been no significant missed turns by anyone OR when such missed turns have in no way helped the person who is winning.
champ11228 (110 D)
29 Nov 10 UTC
In my experience people draw because there's no great way to win unless someone foolishly stabs. It usually isn't neat alliances that last the whole game and draw at the end.
coffeebean (355 D)
29 Nov 10 UTC
I was recently in an anon game where I unknowingly got into an alliance with rhino86 (#6 player on the site by GR as of October), and he completely convinced me that he was exactly the type of player who goes into the game looking for a draw. I trusted him fully, and at the right moment he of course stabbed me and took the solo. The point? Having a mixture of different players with different strategies, goals and approaches is what makes the game great. Being able to read the other players and figure out who will be a loyal ally you can take advantage of (players like me), who is a wolf that needs to be eliminated immediately, and how to convince the the others you're a sheep and not a wolf is what separates the great players from everybody else. It makes no sense to me why people want to homogenize the game and force everyone to play the same way.

Everyone loves talking about what you were thinking and how surprised you were by a player's move or a stab, but no one outside of your game gives a shit. The only exception is games with good players like the Mad Marx games who's commentary would actually help people get better

Player banned during an Anon game.
Was the players name "Auto" or was that a mistake caused by the game being anonymous? And should the code-like text <inside triangular brackets> be there or was that triggered by the same thing? I'm not complaining, I'm just asking.
