No Chat games?
Dont "no chat" games defeat the purpose of Diplomacy? If you cant communicate, then there is no cooperation or deceit. Comments?

Interesting game concept
I was of starting a world war one style game with pre-set alliances and was wondering if anyone was interested. Im thinking it would have to be live though, because I have a convention later this month and dont want to have to pause. Im up for discussion about the allliances though, I just said world war 1 because that would easiest to come up with alliances, but as long as there are two "about equal" teams. im happy. Anyone interested?

Has anyone been following it at all? I am on the side of the video game industry (as I suspect most here are, but maybe I am wrong) but is there anyone out there who favors California’s side?

I guess that I just don’t understand why this needs to be in place. Are parents really so little thought of these days that they can’t pick what is appropriate for their children? I am always asked to show ID when I buy a Mature rated game, so I don’t understand why the government of California thinks that more restrictions need to be in place. If a game is that violent shouldn’t it be on the parents to take the game away from their kids?

I also know that several other countries censor video games quite a bit, most notably Australia, and I don’t want that happening to the United States.

What do you guys think?

I've never been IDd to buy a game, so maybe its a case of implementing the rules more strictly than writing more

@Fig - but you aren't in the states. We have a rating system and laws alreayd in place for purchasing M-rated games, adult videos and magazines, and going into R and NC-17 movies. We don't need more regulations, just parents who give a fuck about their kids welfare.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I was under the impression we have those laws in this country as well Draug.
We have game & film rating, laws on purchase of adult media. However, that doesn't mean they're abided by.
Draugnar (0 DX)

We have undercover folks keeping an eye out for violations of those types her ein the states. Cops will get their kids to try and buy things they shouldn't ve allowed to and bust those places that let them make the purchase.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Again, happens here. However, as far as I know that's mainly done on tobacco & alcohols - not sure about computer games

They even watch for cheats and thieves on lottery ticket sales here. But the real issue is that the retailers don't want to risk the fines and loss of their business license just to let a kid get a M rated game.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

@figlesquide: Maybe its just where I live in the USA, but I've always been ID'd for trying to buy games. Even though while I'm at school, I live in a college town I still get carded. (Granted I look a bit younger than I am)

Even if kids can get these games without the restrictions, why don't parents regulate. Its not like an R rated movie in that you watch it at the theater. You play your video games at home and it should be the parents responsibility to censor if they see fit.

Maybe I have too much faith in the effectiveness of IDing people and the ESRB (the rating system)

@Tom - not all games are played in the home. I'm 44 (an adult), but I know a lot of my coworkers with teenage kids who have laptops and cell phones. The two allow me to play World of Warcraft virtually anywhere, so the teens could do the same. But the real issue is that California's law won't stop them from buying a video game online with electronic distribution via download. More and more kids are getting Visa Money Cards that parent's put allowances and lunch money on. These cards can be used at amazon, Best Buy, B&N, Borders, or lots of other places both online and in the store. In the store they get carded, but not online.

What really needs to be done is to provide a system in which those cards could be blocked from purchasing adult only media out of legitimate online sotrefront inventories.
I could be wrong, but I always thought that over here in the UK the 18+ ratings on computer games were not statutory (unlike those on cigs, booze, videos and adult mags) and that 18+ ratings were put on games simply to boost sales (as I said, I could be wrong).

What really makes you feel old is when some of your coworkers were born the year after you graduated high school and they are having babies. When the playboy playmates and hustler honies are all 25 years younger than you.

Back to IDing. Indiana recently passed a law stating every one must be carded when buying alcohol. The first time they carded me I had a flash back and tryed to explain why the pic didn't look like me.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Really? Yet I can walk in the Casino without showing ID and buy a drink from a waitress when I'm already at the table and never show ID. Sounds like a loop hole in the law.
warsprite (152 D)
04 Nov 10 UTC
This was affective I think July, and I'm not sure how casinos fit in. If you were on a riverboat I think that also affects the laws some how. After a couple of months of out raged restaurant and bar customers they decided they didn't mean each drink in that setting. Some talk I've heard something going around about modifing or repealing the law. So as one joke goes "We card for under 65 so bring your walker".
