No Chat games?
Dont "no chat" games defeat the purpose of Diplomacy? If you cant communicate, then there is no cooperation or deceit. Comments?

Interesting game concept
I was of starting a world war one style game with pre-set alliances and was wondering if anyone was interested. Im thinking it would have to be live though, because I have a convention later this month and dont want to have to pause. Im up for discussion about the allliances though, I just said world war 1 because that would easiest to come up with alliances, but as long as there are two "about equal" teams. im happy. Anyone interested?

*thinking of starting
I'm sure Russia wouldn't find preset WWI alliances very fair... =P

yeah but germany would have to worry about france and england and plus italy could be a loose variable, but like i said we could debate the alliances

We did this last Spring and the Central powers creamed the Allies and we agreed to a 7-way draw when we realized that it was not going to be a lot of fun. We let Italy choose their side and had Russia, England and France against Turkey, Austria and Germany.

It did make it interesting that in this Game Italy was the most decisive, Austria was the most secure and Russia was the most vulnerable.

We did have a fairly new player playing england, so if you have a strong England/France it may work out.

Pre-set alliances are against the rules. You should all be banned for discussing this.

The rule book has this variant listed.Have played it with a friend when other players couldn't be found. It works great. But you must follow the rules for it it to work perfectly.Italy is neutral for the first year and it's territory can't be invade which includes Piemont. After first year a coin toss determines which side Italy joins.Russia can survive if he opens all south and waits for England to help him into sweden in year two to get much needed build to hold off the pressure from Austria and Turkey.
Would be willing to try if the players in the game clearly understood the ground rules going in.

I would be willing to try again. Although with Italy, I think you may need a modifier that if one side is significantly diminished compared to the other that Italy will join the reduced side. This may make it more interesting and fair.

sounds fun to me

hey, I've played the variant before as well - and we had a pretty good game till midgame (around 1905-ish). Then people started to miss turns, which threw of the balance a LOT! (naturally)
I would be interested in the variant as well, so feel free to invite/contact me, or try to create a game. If I get notice of it, I will be in for sure :)

I was Germany in the game joey1 mentioned, and it was fun experience. Russia and Germany are in hardest position. Russia is attacked by Turkey and Austria, while Germany by England and France. Winner is that alliance who is better coordinated in that initial attack. In our game Turkey and Austria were better coordinated in attacking Russia, then France and England were in their attack on Germany. When Italy joined Central pact it was obvious who will win.

so that 5 plus me equals 6, we just need one more and what day is good to do this? I was thinking saturday maybe?

Just start up the game put the password here and the first 7 to join get to play.

I'll play. I guess it'll end with a draw after the opposing side is eliminated? I also like the idea of Italy as able to choose rather than be randomly assigned.

I created the game, come join and we will start when we get 7

yeah, the whole point of this game is to be more realistic and realistically countries just dont go around and betray their allies, im sure only players who will play by the rules will join

I would appreciate the password as well.

I'd like to try the idea (would probably work better in ftf where it probably does to a certain extent anyway) of automatic allies *before* the countries are picked. Maybe even like the secret society missions in the old RPG Paranoia, where it's pre-determined who you're gunning for, but nobody else knows.

Sorry - password is ww1
holloway (509 D)

I am in - thanks for organising this. Looking forward to it :)

Regarding the ending: I assume that the winning team will draw in the end then, right?
I'll do it. I was in the last one (France) Yes, the winning side simply settles for a Draw.
joey1 (198 D)
04 Nov 10 UTC
Either Draw, or if one player clearly out performs and they can get the 18 then they claim a win. I have set it up as Points per supply center, so the winning team can decide what they want to do, but I figure a draw would be the usual course of action.

Last time I looked there is only 1 place left.
