Anyone out there know of an operating system that is both free and worth using? I'd like to shave a speck off Microsoft's share of the home PC market.

There's an ongoing live gunboat I'm in with an alliance that is too damn effective. So, who do I PM? I don't think anyone should lose the points from this piece of crap game.

Well done to Tawz who just won our live game. Has anyone got 5 minutes to discuss this game. I don't want it to become a slanging match, rather a discussion.

Prop 8 OVERTURNED!
I'm not gay, but I'm really, truly happy about this...religion has no place deciding who gets to marry who.

Hey--if a bitter man and gold-digger woman can get married and divorce so soon, why deny Mr. Sulu his right go to Warp with someone he loves? ;) How do you feel about all of this? (And check our Jon Steart's Daily Show's talk about all of this, informative AND hilarious!)

@ConMan:
Well, he tortured Job with no reason.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Aug 10 UTC
God permitted Satan to kill Job's wife and children. He may as well have done it himself. And his reason? to prove Job would be faithful to him. Not a good reason in my book.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
Hitler would have said he had a great reason. Pol Pot too. Stalin probably justified his crimes as well. After a certain body count, I think justifications are increasingly ineffective. I hold your theoretical God to the same standard.

Once the body count gets into the millions......
@Draugnar: Job's wife and children would have ended up in Heaven, which is much better than earth, so that isn't that bad of a thing.
@Jack: " I hold your theoretical God to the same standard." You shouldn't.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
So by that standard, its totally OK for me to go kill anybody who claims they've been saved and accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior? Hold on, I gotta book a trip to Westboro Kansas......

SCORE!
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
And why not?

Saying he's God isn't enough.
I believe he is God. So I don't hold Him to the same standard. You don't believe he is God. So you can hold Him to whatever standard you want. I'm okay with that. I'm just here to tell you you're wrong.
Tantris (2456 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
oh wow, it is so good that the ConMan is here to tell us we are wrong.

And, that we should hold the theoretical most powerful thing in the universe to a lesser standard than ourselves.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
Well, you're not the first. And you probably won't be the last.

Just because you believe in a sky god doesn't oblige anybody but yourself to that belief.

But then again, a few hundred years ago, your coreligionists would have lit me on fire for saying what I've said. :) Wonderful traditions you folks have. Simply wonderful.

So you, who doesn't like laws or whatnot, are telling me what I should and should not believe in my own mind?

You may want to think hard about your political and religious beliefs.
I never said lesser standard. Anytime God has killed, it was with good reason. Anyway, I have no interest in arguing in this thread anymore, so, goodbye.
@Jack: See mutualist thread. And, I'm not telling you what to believe.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
You just did.

"@Jack: " I hold your theoretical God to the same standard." You shouldn't. "

Not even ten minutes ago.

I understand you probably regret and would change those words now. But you did say exactly that.
@Jack: By 'You shouldn't, I meant it was a bad idea. I was in no way telling you what to believe. I also posted this: "So you can hold Him to whatever standard you want." See? I'm not telling you what to believe.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
10 Aug 10 UTC
mmm. I think that a so so cover. Good attempt.

But in any case, your entire Christian religion is based on telling others what to believe. But I'll let it go. You really do need to be more careful about HOW you say things.
@Jack: My personality thing is INTP. I was reading about what it says I should be like, and one of the things was eerily exactly like me and explained my anarchist/minarchist beliefs: "INTPs do not like to lead or control people. They're very tolerant and flexible in most situations, unless one of their firmly held beliefs has been violated or challenged, in which case they may take a very rigid stance." That made me laugh because of how true it is.

"Please tell me of any person God killed without a good reason."

Ummmmm

"And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead." --Exodus 12:29-30--

"So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men." --I Chronicles 21:14--

"And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter." --I Samuel 6:19--

"And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense." --Numbers 16:32-35--

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." --I Samuel 15:2-3--

"And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under the axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem." ---II Samuel 12:31---

"The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked." --Psalms 58:10--

But of course the suckling infants of Amalek were asking for it, right?

Those wicked babies.
@FS: I consider all of those justified.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Aug 10 UTC
@CM - most people would not. What possible justification is there for intentionally killing all the women and children in a society for what a small gorup of men did. Hell, even if all the men of the society did it, God was still killing innocent women and children *on purpose*. That would be like us nuclear bombing an entire city or two and intentionally killing everyone in said cities just to get back at what their military did to a military base or two. Oh wait, we did that, didn't we...

The Evil of Capitalism: How Capitalists Exploit
Ever since capitalism and meritocracy became the standard system of economics, exploitation has been committed by man against his fellow man. No system has undermined man’s humanity in the same manner by rewarding those who will exploit their brethren.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: So Plato, Locke, & Rand Walk Into A Polity's Bar...
We've had a lot of talk on the site, recently, about the role of the State, whether it be how the State should be, it's relationship with the people, or otherwise.
So the question is simple--what is your ideal form of government, your idea of the perfect political theory? Do we have a social contract? What is the function of government? Is there a State of Nature? What are the merits of Government and Anarchism? The State of the State Adress--this time!
