New Games
How do a create a new game which starts at a particular time? i was under the impression that when 7 people join, the game starts basically immediately (might be a short down time for a 'cycle' to pass), but i just joined a game where it starts at a particular time. I dont see that option in the New game settings ... it sucks because i joined a live game thinking that it will start when 7 people join, but instead its starting in 3 hrs -- im now locked into the game and cant play in 3 hours ...

Loser is holding up game
A loser, both figuratively and literally, is holding up our 3 day/phase game by being the only guy to not ready up for the retreats phase (he is dead this phase).

Remagen (162 D)
02 Jul 10 UTC
I mailed him and asked him to ready up and got this:
France: Could you please ready up all the way?
Germany: 12:46 PM nope
Germany: 12:47 PM dickweed

I sent an e-mail to the moderators but have yet to get a reply. Just wondering, but this *is* unacceptable behavior right?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
02 Jul 10 UTC
Wrong.

YOU agreed to play a 3-days-per-phase game. That means that every player is entitled to spend up to three days on each phase. Players are under no obligation to finalise their orders before the end of the phase.

If you don't like waiting, join a game with a shorter phase length.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
Eventually, hopefully, this will one day be remidied with auto orders when there are no options for retreat (only disband) and also when your last unit(s) is/are about to be disbanded cause you have no SCs on the build phase. Until then, he *is* within his rights, but he is also a dick.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jul 10 UTC
Don't complain about the phase length. If you wanted to play shorter games, you shouldn't have joined a 3 day game. It's possible that he's using this time to try to save himself, although, in this particular instance, that doesn't seem to be the case. I'll agree that if you've lost (and aren't diploming) the civil thing to do is to finalize. But, just like pauses, it's a courtesy, not a requirement.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Jul 10 UTC
Unacceptable? No. Poor loser? Yes.

Feel free to name and shame him on the forum if you wish to.

Someday the code may be able to detect these situations where when a unit has no where to retreat to so it will auto-disband as well as auto-disbanding in the build phase when a country has 0 supply centers. Until then, you agreed to the phase length when you started the game so you just have to be patient. Or not.

But it isn't something a moderator will act on. Everyone has the right to make their reputation what it is.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
Yeah, he has no retreats and no SCs will be left, so he is being a dick. Just understand that some players are that way and move on. The turn will run and he will be out of the game for good. Looking at his states, he has no wins, draws 10% of the time, survives 10% of the time, and is eliminated 80% of the time. I doubt he even hangs aroudn the site much longer with those kind of stats.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Jul 10 UTC
By the way, if the game was paused in this state and he refused to unpause when he was already effectively eliminated, that the moderators could/would/should do something about and force the unpause. But you'd still be waiting out the phase.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
The mods would forcibly unpause that, but Ald is right, you'd still have to wait out the phase.

I think you can tell a lot about a player's skill by how gracefully they lose. A good player realizes that at least a few people need to go, and this time it was him. He usually thanks people for the game and moves on with his life.

A poor player takes it as a personal offense and resorts to insults and cheap tricks to slow down the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
abgemacht +1 - Although poor players can also take it with grace if they are of the "it's just a game" mindset. I'm hardly the greatest (mediocre at best), but I'd never pull a dick stunt like that. I might get a bit miffed if it was a result of a blatant lie, but I'd still congratulate them. And if it was a hard fought game I'd thank them for the lesson and study what I did wrong.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jul 10 UTC
@Draug,

I suppose that's very true. I guess it could even go the other way, if a really good player feels they lost because someone did something very stupid. In general, though, I'd say it's a good indicator.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

poor attitude versus poor ability. different things.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jul 10 UTC
But, as with anything else in life, attitude usually has an affect on ability.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Jul 10 UTC
And yet high ability can also lend itself to poor attitude.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jul 10 UTC
Would you not agree that this particular situation is more likely to arise in inexperienced rather than quality players?
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
Absolutely. Quality players wouldn't let themselves lose all three of their remaining SCs in one move.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Jul 10 UTC
I would not not agree, meaning I would agree that this particular situation is more likely with inexperienced players.

I was just pointing out that Draug was interpreting "poor player" as poor ability when I thought it was meant previously in this thread as poor attitude.

Notice the first sentence, Alderian... "I think you can tell a lot about a player's skill." Not their attitude, but their skill. clearly his analogy was oriented aroudn the skill of the player, not the attitude or personality. That is what I was repsonding to.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jul 10 UTC
By "poor player" I did mean ability, otherwise my statement would just be a tautological waste of space.

I understand that there isn't a correlation of 1 between ability and attitude, but I think it's large enough to justify my statement.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Jul 10 UTC
Fair enough, I was wrong in my interpretation and/or failed in my reading of the text on my screen, my apologizes.
Remagen (162 D)
02 Jul 10 UTC
@abgemacht I would

@'Shouldn't have done 3 days/phase peeps' Myself (and I assume most others) assumed the 3 days would be for thought and diploming, not dicking around but yeah I suppose I should've considered the possibility.

@Rem

Let me elaborate my saying that I sympathize with your position. It's happened to me, and it is annoying. The reality of the situation though is that the Mods have enough to deal with and simply can't be responsible for this. Furthermore, even if they did have time, it would be interfering with the game in an unprecedented way, so I would still be against it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jul 10 UTC
@Rem - I think most of us sympathize. But, that being siad, if he isn't breaking established rules, just suffer through and take solace in the thought that he will be gone by the end fo the holiday weekend (if you're in the US).
