New Games
How do a create a new game which starts at a particular time? i was under the impression that when 7 people join, the game starts basically immediately (might be a short down time for a 'cycle' to pass), but i just joined a game where it starts at a particular time. I dont see that option in the New game settings ... it sucks because i joined a live game thinking that it will start when 7 people join, but instead its starting in 3 hrs -- im now locked into the game and cant play in 3 hours ...

Great alliance with Germany in the early game.
In the end, when I decided to try the solo, I didn't think it would be that easy... as a matter of fact I thought I had 17 sc's guaranteed but I was not sure if I would get the 18th. I guess I benefited from Turkey (DingleberryJones) attacking Italy (Ursa). If T,I,G kept working together, as I expected to happen, I'm not sure I would win this.

Anyway, it was a really challenging game.
Only got annoyed with some of you not finalling when it was asked pre-game to commit to finalize orders... nothing too important.

See you all soon :D

Hey, great topic and congratulations with your victory!

I am probably one of those who wasn't finalizing always. I save my orders to rethink them at another moment. Unfortunately, there could be some time before I got to check them again.

Now, about the game. It went pretty standard up until Austria was finished. I tried to keep him alive a bit but I missed his supports and when I decided to use them he didn't give them... so when he NMR'd I decided to take him out. I was kinda surprised with the sudden German invasion :o Then I saw I was stupid, I should've seen that coming. I feared an Anglo-German alliance would sweep the board so I tried to patch things up with Turkey. Luckily Germany also attacked Turkey, so they were no friends. Focusing on Germany did leave my flank open for Turkey, and I hoped he would see the need. About that time we were also fooling around in the western Med. Troodonte, you did a good job in outguessing me, congratz on that one.

And then Turkey stabbed me, probably thinking to go for a three way draw. So I burned my ships and went to fight him. At the same time, Germany gave the game away to Germany. I am still wondering why. If I was going to get a build from the Turkish war I'd invest in stopping England. So I'd like an EOG from both Germany and Turkey, what they were thinking with the choices they made.

It did cost me 200 D but if there's another one soon, I'd be in it.

So... I was Austria. The entire time I wanted to work with Russia and Italy against Turkey, but obviously my plan didn't work and I was quickly owned.

Frankly, I am a bit surprised that you stabbed me so early, Ursa. Didn't you know what would happen? In any case, I assumed you saw my supports bu didn't want them so I wasn't as vigilant and missed one of my turns. Ah well. :/

I don't feel too terrible about losing as Austria, but I feel like I made quite a few bad mistakes, particularly regarding Italian and Russian intentions.

@ FS: well, you went for six, and would've become awfully big - and I figured I could just sneak inthere. With hindsight, I think Turkey profited most from it, as you were on five centers but very vulnerable. If I hadn't done something the game would've looked quite different I think. But then perhaps I would have become victim to your expansionism.

the reason i gave the game away was because i would have had to put my trust in turkey to stay alive, and considering he had just screwed up the four way draw, i wasn't going to put myself in that position.

had the turk stayed the course, england would have gained only one center in his attack on me in 1912. at the same time, he would have been bounced out of the gol, and italy would have been able to build another fleet in rome (giving ita and tur a combined 5 to 2 fleet advantage in the med). now, i can't speak for troodonte, but if that had happened, i think he would have drawn.

the very last thing i was going to do was fight england with everything i had while affording the turk time to take out italy and then myself so he could two way draw.

i hope dj posts, because i'd like to know why he gave up a sure four way draw.

@ trip:

I still don't understand why your fear of losing out on the draw lead you to give Eng the win. Either way, you lose the game, so why not take the chance on the possible draw rather than go for the guaranteed loss?
trip (696 D(B))
01 Jul 10 UTC
it wasn't a fear of losing the draw. that draw was lost.

i guess i could have continued on and prayed to remain in a three way draw as a two center power, but i would have been completely dependent on the guy who blew up the four way draw to do so. and by completely dependant, i mean that my only chance was that turkey wouldn't walk into war and mosc when i left them unprotected to continue fighting england...and then he'd have to let me retreat back to them after all my other centers were lost.

Troodonte please reply to my pm
Ahhh...

I wasn't sure on the 4 way draw. And if there was one, it would mostly be me behind Germany and Italian lines doing nothing but watching.

Before I stabbed Italy, I counted. As long as Germany defended himself, Engalnd couldn't have gotten to 18. Why go for a 4 way when you can get a 3 way? Even with the Italian disbands, England was so spread out he could not have gotten to 18. And with just a few English fleets in the south, my fleets would have overwhelmed eventually.

I was certainly not in any position to attack Germany, and even supported Moscow in the final year. There was nothing to fear from Turkey.

England was at 13 (England, Denmark, Sweden, France, Iberia, Belgium, Holland and Tunis).

He probably would have gotten Norway, but he could never get St Pete. He didn't have the strength to attack the now empty Italy, but even giving him Venice and Rome and norway, he was still only at 16. Germany concentrates on defense, and we push to a draw.

What I didn't count on was Germany giving up so easily. Rather give the game away than try something unexpected.
"i mean that my only chance was that turkey wouldn't walk into war and mosc when i left them unprotected to continue fighting england."

I built 2 fleets that final year and made no move to reinforce Sevastapol. I supported Moscow from Sev. I'm not sure what else I could have done to allay your suspicions. But even with those suspicions, leaving Germany to give England the game is cowardly.

Hummmm...I'm not sure that I wouldn't get 18 DJ...
In fact I am almost sure I would get them.
You stabbed Italy and built 2 fleets in Fall 1912. By that time I had tunis, 3 builds and an army in ruhr, hol, fleet in den and swe. Kiel in impossible to defend and munich is next.
So, I think I could secure Tunis long enough to get all germany, and the fleets needed to get norway and STP (germany had only armies so stp is always possible to take from the west with fleets: north sea would take norway, den baltic --> Gob; Edi --> barent; sew --> fin... 4 units against 3.
Plus... Germany would have disbands which would make it easier.
Meanwhile another fleet build in LVp was on his way to the med.

I think that this is what would have happened.

And you missed the 1st fleet move to rome to point 3 fleets to tys...

you're right troodonte. dingleberry didn't just blow what was almost surely going to be a four way draw because he couldn't sit behind me and italy and hold for one year (troodonte, you never did answer my question above about whether you would have drawn in that situation), he blew any chance at keeping you from going solo.

suspicions my ass, dj, what did you just do to italy when he was trying to fight off england before the build in 1912? did you attack his open centers? if you don't like the consequences of your actions, maybe you should look at how YOU play the game, instead of judging others.
Troodonte (3379 D)

@trip
Not sure... only if I was sure that I couldn't get the solo.
Probably yes because Italy made me disband 1 fleet in the med (GoL).
