The Top 5 YOU Have Wanted To Serve With
There have been so many great generals, commanders, colonels, captains, admirals... some cruel, some kind (to their men, anyway) and some downright insane.

Still, imagine you have to go off to war tomorrow, any time period, but you HAVE to go off to fight a war- what's your short list, your Top 5 Commanders YOU'D want to have?
Stukus (2126 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
1. Erwin Rommel
2. Julius Caesar
3. George Washington
4. Agathocles
5. Napoleon

General Lee, CSA- brilliant strategist that consistently killed more of the enemy than he lost. With little, he kept an army moving and winning.
Alexander the Great- conquering the known and unknown world
Ghengis Khan- killing and plundering
Erwin Rommel- fought regardless of politics, may have won the war for Nazi Germany
Scipio Africanus- finally defeated the genius Hannibal
Hunter49r (189 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
First one that comes to mind is Sun tzu. :D

2.) George W. Bush (just because I think it would be fun/funny)
3.) Darth Vader would be cool. He's probably more chill then the movie showed him as.
4.) Custard.
5.) Hannibal

For me:

1. Napoleon- This guy was a hero of mine as a kid when I thought war heroes were nearly gods on earth in a way... and now that I've lost that believe- I STILL FREAKING LOVE NAPOLEON! The man is AMAZING! Short (ok, ok, YES, he WAS average height for his time, but this is Napoleon, the short reference MUST be made!) but always confident, so intelligent, so complicated... and he was one of those leaders that just CARED for the folks on his side. He cared about France. He cared about his family. He cared about the JEWS, for heaven's sake, how often has THAT happened with a military leader in Europe, especially up to Napoleon's day, he got them out of the ghettos in Western Europe. And, of course, his men LOVED him, I mean LOVED him... they'd have to to have put up with marches through Italy and Egypt and Russia. Yes, he lost in the end, but I still think that he's one of the greatest military minds ever (doing one of my "Rushmores" again, I'd pick Napoleon, Alexander, Caesar, and then likely Ghengis Khan, maybe subbing out Khan for Ike or MacArthur or Patton if a modern leader were called for) and this is who I'd have WANTED to serve under. I'm a weakiling, I'll admit it, I suck at so many things you need to be a good soldier and I'm not great medically at all, I don't know HOW our soldiers do it overseas (kudos to them, a bigtime ALUTE to them, whatever your opinion of the war, you HAVE to respect these guys, what they have to do and the fact that they can do it is AMAZING and a testament to their great will and character)... but I have to say:

If given the chance, I'd work my ass off as hard as possible and even learn French if I had to, I'd want to march with the Master! ;)

2. Horatio Nelson- Odd my top 2 are from the same era, same war... and on the opposite sides. But Nelso is amazing, too, and if I were going to fight a sea war, I'd want him as my leader, for three main reasons- brilliant leader, fascinating man that strikes me as sort of the Captain Picard of naval warfare, and if I had to go to war on any ship, my choice WOULD have to be the HMS Victory... the USS Enterprise (the real WWII battleship, though in a couple hundred years if Kirk or Picard need recruiting... just no red shirt for me! lol) comes a close second and I almost picked it, but the leader just doesn't stand out. The Enterprise and Vicotry are EASILY the two greatest ships in naval history, and it'd have been hell but maybe an amazing hell to serve on either... but given the choice, I'll take Nelson and the victory.

3. Washington- OK, 3 picks in the late 18th-early 19th century era in a row to start the list, can you guess my favorite what era I'd have loved to have been in war-wise? ;) some say Washington as a general is overrated- to that I say, in true American fashion, BULLSH*T! Yes, he lost and lost and LOST, but he hung in there and, more importantly, what made him great and one I'd have loved to serve with, he made his MEN hang in there... Valley Forge, more than any other battle, was maybe Washington's greatest victory in the Revolution. The fact he kept a bunch of farmers and artisans that had been beaten and beaten by the British and were now hunkered down in freezing cold from deserting, that the Continental Army stayed intact at all... WASHINTON. The famous crossing the Delaware, coupled with Valley Forge- showing whey he was a great general, a great soldier's general, and the perfect man, once the war was done, to be Father of Our Country. We ALL love ya, George (and we're all sorry your country's been messed up so badly... blame the last guy in office, he stole your name, George, but mostly blame both parties for being so partisan, Red or Blue... you were Red, White, and Blue forever, you knew better than to be partisan, you didn't even really have a party!) ;)

4. Alexander- I have a cheat in this one, because I picked him for a few reasons here, one sort of... well, decide for yourself: personality, cool period of time, tutored by Aristotle (if I could've met HIM!)... and, yep, NEVER LOST! That's ALWAYS a plus side when you're choosing a commander, right? :D

5. Theodore Roosevelt- A bit of a cheat, maybe, but I'm taking the pick anyway- TR IS AMAZING! He was my favorite president as a kid; as an adult, I still idolize he and his distant cousin FDR. This pick is completel because of TR; the war was short, but in Cuba, and disseas-riden, and hot, and humid... but for the chance to be there with THEODORE ROOSEVELT... THAT would be amazing!

Honorable Mentions- Caesar, Eisenhower, Patton, MacArthur, the WWII USS Enterprise and her captain
1. Hannibal--an elephant rider, especially.
2. Napoleon--just because it's Napoleon.
3. George Washington--relive my country's history.

My list will confine to three because I don't know enough about or as many generals as I would like.

Btw...

What's with Rommel? I know he was a great leader... but you'd really want to fight with a Nazi FOR the Nazis?

I know SSReichsFuhrer wouldn't mind (I wonder why...) but really- for Nazi Germany?

On a side note, let's say we have Patton vs. Rommel in a battle. I'm taking Patton's side and hoping George C. Scott- er, Patton- prevails, think he could...

One battle- Patton or Rommel?
Anyone who picks Alexander the Great doesn't know their history. ;)

No one had any ambition to conquer or go to war. The whole camp would be uninspiring. However, if I could be second in command, then it'd be another story. But being a mere soldier under him would just suck.

Ok, here comes the dream team...

1) Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane,
-A Royal Navy Admiral, a radical MP, the commander of the Greek, Brazillian and Chilean navies, an escaped convict, and such a skilled naval leader Napolean called him "The Sea Wolf".
2) Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Fisher
-Bloody good admiral and inventer of the Dreadnaught
3) General Sir Michael Jackson
-Everything a General should be. Commands amazing loyalty from his men.
4) Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington
- He beat Napolean. Say no more.
5) Ace Rimmer...
- What a guy!

General Sherman: His troops survived at a rate something like 97%.
Commander Susan Ivanova*
Commander Adama
Captain Malcom Reynolds
Captain Dylan Hunt
Captain James T. Kirk

*- well I'd certainly like to serve under her.

@stukus:

Yeah, but still, even if Rommel wasn't a Nazis... you'd still be fighting FOR THEM.

I mean, that's something to consider here, isn't it? Who you're fighting for?

I wouldn't want to fight for Khan or for Pol Pot or Stalin (he killed his generals, so he counts as a commander lol.)

Napoleon, I'm fighting for a brilliant French Empire and the man who's emancipating my people...

Nelson, another great Empire, the greatest warship ever (along with the Enterprise) and if I'm at Trafalgar, they name a whole square in LONDON for the deeds there!

Washington... I'm fighting for my country's birth, easy! :)

Alexander, I'm boldly conquering where no army has conquered before... and I'm in the Age of Aristotle when people still thought... and its Greece/Macedon/Egypt/Persia, that's just awesome.

And Theodore Roosevelt... its Theodore Roosevelt. His face is forever carved into a MOUNTAIN, he's so awesome...

You have covered most of my favourites, one more to add:

Sir John Monash, a bit of Australian bias here.

On the other hand here is a list of commanders I would dread to serve under.

Gaius Terentius Varro
George A. Custer
Antonio Lopez de Santa. Anna
Arthur Percival
Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
Hahaha... I like that, panache, 5 to DREAD in command...

Have to agree with Custer- strict guy, and you just KNOW you're screwed...
How about Caligula- so nuts he made his horse consul and ordered his men to ATTACK THE WATER because he was mad at Poseidon!
Stalin... yep, he killed all nearly all his enemies and nearly all his generals and soldiers...
Richard III, if he was ANYTHING like his Shakespearean counterpart...

Who'd be a captain/admiral you'd dread to serve under on a ship?
chamois (136 D)

@ Danny-
I'm not sure Abraham Lincoln had a military career, and Churchill as leader of WWII England or Churchill through his military career? Either way, he was nothing spectacular when commissioned and, while a great war-time leader, he did not deal with military workings for the British in WWII
Stukus (2126 D)

We can always fight under WWI Rommel?
lulzworth (366 D)

Obiwan - People stopped thinking after Aristotle? I'm fairly certain that Alexander took Aristotle's years of private tutoring and told him to shove it up his ass.
Hunter49r (189 D)

I think Obiwan stopped that sentence short, judging by his other post in the thread, lulzworth
Stukus (2126 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
And as for the Patton vs Rommel battle, I'd still be with Rommel. Patton was a dick. Remember that time he yelled at someone with Shell Shock?
krellin (80 DX)
29 Apr 10 UTC
Patton was a dick, therefore you wouldn't serve under him and would choose a NAZI instead? Hmmm...not sure how that logic works. Patton beat a superior force with inferior equipment. He was a tough, unapologetic leader...the kind you want in a war...and a supreme tactician. Patton was the first to come to mind.

Gonna have to ditto Speaker - Cpt James T Kirk, though I Picard is a pretty close second, there.

Gandalf is pretty much a bad-ass, too. (I know, some think he's overrated...but when he let's loose, you gotta like Gandalf.)

Hunter49r (189 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
Serving under Admiral Ackbar would be a dream come true for me.

I don't really see why there is all the hate towards Nazi generals. I mean, a lot of generals listed weren't the most ethical. Custer killed a bunch of Indians, Khan and Alexander both invaded and killed/enslaved foreign nations.
lulzworth (366 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
@Hunter - I'm not following you. Explain?
Stukus (2126 D)
29 Apr 10 UTC
Well the thread is about commanders, not political leaders. And Rommel had much worse odds than Patton did, in terms of material and men.

Napoleon wrote a textbook got the French military academy. His list (top 7) was:
Alexander the Great
Hannibal Barca
Julius Caesar
Gustavus Adolphus
Turenne
Eugene of Savoy
Friedrick the Great

I'll dispute Rommel. Heinz Guderian was better. He just took the fall for failing to take Moscow.

I think most people are forgetting about a few historical era's

Mine would be:
1. Godfrey of Bouillon- Frankish knight. Was the leader of the Crusading forces that fought the Saracens back from Byzantine lands and conquered Jerusalem.

2. John III Sobieski- King of Poland. Threw off the Turkish invaders at the Siege of Vienna and ended the Turkish advance through Europe.

3. Álvaro de Bazán- Spanish Admiral. One of the commanders at the Battle of Lepanto and the planner of the Spanish Invasion of England (the reason it failed is because he died three days before the Invasion happened)

4. Scipio Africanus- Roman General. Fought the Battle of Zama, defeating Hannibal.

5. Georgy Zhukov- Soviet General. Fought off the Nazi’s at the siege of Moscow and drove the Germans all the way back, conquering Berlin. (Also present at the detonation of the first Soviet Atomic bomb)

Jan Sobieski broke the Siege of Vienna, but Eugen of Savoy drove the Turks back 1000 miles over three campaigns. He could have marched into Istanbul unopposed but the Hapsburgs decided that the Turkish threat would make it easier to keep the Hungarians and Southern Slavs under control. Oh yeah and in his day job he beat Louis XIV a few times.

I'd still take Gudarian over Zhukov any day.
