WW1 set alliance game
I think it may be an interesting idea to try a set alliance game modeled after WW1. France, Britain and Russia against Germany, Austria and Turkey. Italy can take either side they want and can switch if they desire. The others are to maintain their alliances. gameID=27323 password is ww1

Need one more for 24 hour WTA Gunboat
Need one more for a gunboat game, with the idea that losing with 5 vs losing with 7 is irrelevant. You should be going into this game with the idea of a solo win. I'll send the PW if you are interested.

Theme Music For All Occasions
Give an occasion or event, and then a song you wish you could just have being played at it... funny or serious... one that comes to mind for me: just once, at a funeral, I want to hear someone say, "Cheer up *insert name." Yo know what they say..." And then a big, rousing version, chorus and all, of "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life." (Idle NEEDS to have that song played at his funeral someday... here's hoping that's a LONG way off, though!) ;)

Rules question: Dislodged Convoy
Can a fleet that is dislodged retreat to the territory that it was attempting to convoy to?

What happens if....
What would be the result of these moves?
dave bishop (4694 D)

One one side:
Aegean convoys army to Greece from Constantinople
Constantinople moves to Greece via convoy
Bulgaria supports Constantinople to Greece.

BUT on the other
Ionian moves to Aegean
Greece support ionian to Aegean

Would Aegean be disbanded?

If you aren't support holding Aegean then the move to Greece fails...

yeah ok.
Its seems kind of odd that if agean had just moved to greece it would have been taken

From diplom.org...

The Convoy Disruption Paradox
The basic Diplomacy rules of convoys, supports and cutting of supports can fairly frequently produce paradoxes, such as the one shown in Example 3.3.

Example 3.3

France: Army Brest -> English Channel -> London.
France: Fleet English Channel CONVOY Army Brest -> London.
England: Fleet London SUPPORT Fleet Wales -> English Channel.
England: Fleet Wales -> English Channel.
Does the convoyed attack cut the support, thereby protecting the convoy? Or does the supported attack disrupt the convoy, preventing the support from being cut? Both possibilities seem plausible. The original Avalon Hill (1976) rules resolved this particular case by asserting that "a convoyed attack does not protect the convoying fleets." Specifically, the rules state:

If a convoyed army attacks a fleet which is supporting a fleet which is attacking one of the convoy fleets, that support is not cut.
This resolves the issue for simple cases like this one.

Dave, yes Aegean could have taken Greece with Bulgaria's support, but then the other side would have their fleet in the Aegean which is probably very undesirable.

I think in this case, Aegean is lost because the support isn't cut by the convoy and it gets dislodged.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

Alderian, you cannot convoy an army if the convoying fleet is dislodged in the first place.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Easiest way to think about it is, while most things are simultaneous, Convoys have to be picked up and dropped off, taking more time. there fore the attack takes place before the fleet is ever able to pickup it's charge and it is dislodged.

This one is the simple one. The complex one is the convoy paradox for which there is usually a "special" rule made. It is this:

France:
A Brest to London
F English Channel convoy Brest to London
A Wales support move to London from Brest

Germany:
F North Sea move to English Channel
F London support move to English Channel from North Sea

England:
F Irish Sea move to English Channel
F Mid Atlantic support move to English Channel from Irish Sea

Essentially the problem is that the German and English fleets bounce each other in the English Channel, leaving the French fleet intact. This allows the convoy to land and dislodge the London fleet. However, since this fleet is dislodged, its support move is cut, so therefore the English actually take the English Channel. However, since they take the English Channel, the French fleet is dislodged and the convoy fails. However, since the convoy fails, the London fleet's support is not cut and Germany and England bounce in the English Channel. This repeats itself indefinitely.

@nola, interesting. And what is the resolution for that one? Perhaps the convoy should be bounced as well (the convoy fails but without dislodging the fleet) in cases where two potentially successful attacks on the convoy bounced each other. Do you have a better solution? Actually that could be the fall-back solution for all paradoxes... in cases of all apparent paradoxes, all involved units bounce and remain where they are.

I've heard a slightly different version of the paradox, where it was simply a french convoy attack cutting the british support against the convoying fleet.

Damn, i can't see a good resolution for that more complex paradox...

and i know you can enter these orders in a game (probably without crashing the server) i just don't know the 'standard' resolution (ie the DATC one)

Also finally a 'what about these moves' which isn't simple for me to answer... interesting.

convoy fails and englihs channel is not dislodged.

An interesting result, feels right, it's covered in help.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Regarding my earlier comment, I knew the convoy was not successful, I was just forgetting the fact that whether the first country moved Aegean to Greece or had Aegean convoy Con to Greece, either way the other country would get the Aegean Sea. Sorry for any confusion.
