What Happens If A Game Doesn't Get Filled?
First time creating a game, gave it 5 days for people to join, at the moment it looks like it might not quite be full at the start time.

What would happen once the start time is reached?

Goondip Chaos Games
Chaos is a variant of diplomacy in which each SC of the original diplomacy map is occupied by a different player, who must use clever diplomacy with loads of other players to create a situation in which they are the one to advance.
Vitus (100 D)

I have created two variations, one with a gunboat style of play, one with standard rules.

I encourage everyone to register on Goondip and play the games, as Chaos is a very exciting and challenging game type.

Obvious users will need to copy the entire link, and not just click on the gameID, as the games are hosted on goondip.com and not webdip.net.

Does that mean, in keeping with the original rules, that the one SC you start with is your only home SC, and therefore the only place you can build at?

This would seem too much of a constraint. Let's say you begin with Munich, Vienna, Moscow or any of the many other landlocked SCs. That means you will only ever be able to build armies, and never fleets... Or am I missing something?
Vitus (100 D)

The rules are changed so that you may build in any SC.
Vitus (100 D)
06 Apr 10 UTC
Any SC that you own, that is.

Why would you ever help another power capture anything?
Vitus (100 D)
06 Apr 10 UTC
Quid pro Quo. If you don't help someone else, they might not help you. Or you can support someone into somewhere and then move to their original territory. It's diplomacy.

Which SC usually wins?
Vitus (100 D)
06 Apr 10 UTC
The winning SC's are generally French, German or British. Russia, Turkey, Austria and the Balkans are to condensed to have a winner come from them. You have to be lucky as a power surrounded by others to survive.

The one of these I was in, everyone was forming alliances within their country against other countries, for example the french players versus the german players versus the Scandinavian players. But then those break down to only have 2 or 3 players still trying to work together. It is all about timing and when to cut your neighbors throat. Much like a normal game except you have to do it several times to succeed. At least that was my impression.

any chance we can get these varients on here or at least some?
Vitus (100 D)
07 Apr 10 UTC
Exactly right Alderian.

@dep5greg, that's something you'll have to suggest to mods and admins on this site.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

dep4greg, I answered that question in the other thread. Kestas has chosen to only have a few variants here, knowing that goondip and olidip will have a multitude of variants. There are a lot of players from here that also play there.
Vitus (100 D)
07 Apr 10 UTC
@Alderian. I think the only difference from what you said is that because you start with only one unit, players are FORCED to use diplomacy, rather than just be able to gunboat, even in press games.
It's actually amazing, though the gunboat chaos is an exercise in blind luck

Why would anyone play gunboat chaos?
Vitus (100 D)
12 Apr 10 UTC
For the chance of it I guess.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

But one of the joys of Diplomacy is that luck plays so little a part in the outcome!
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

Next you'll be saying you've invented a variant version of chess where all the pieces are given D&D stats and you have to roll dice to see if the queen really can capture that pawn, etc.
Vitus (100 D)
12 Apr 10 UTC
Ahh, but even in Chaos games you cant say that it's entirely luck. The difficulty in guessing people's moves based on what they've done previously, and on communicating without words makes the whole thing very enjoyable :)

Today On The Philosopher's Corner: Kant's Categorical vs. Mill's Action-and-Utility
I LOVE Philosophy. And I LOVE my Philosophy of Ethics class in the college I go to- the class is active and actually inquisitive, great material, and the professor's hilarious, engaging, and sharp, Dr. Zhu. (THICK accent.) In our class, every session there's a showdown: its obiwanobiwan vs. The Cop (both of us share the actual real name.) I champion Mill, and ACT Utilitarianism. The Cop, being used to strictness and cold law, LOVES Kant. Categorical vs. Utility?

Interesting Gunboat to watch and enjoy.
gameID=16346 - I won't comment as it is an ongoing game and would appreciate it if none of you did beyond the basic "Nice move by ___ in ___" kind of thing. We are in Fall 13 with 6 nations still fighting hard.

Javascript Timeouts when entering orders on World Variant
I am not entirely sure where this goes, so if I am posting in the wrong spot, please redirect me. In a world variant in which I am playing (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=20858), when I (and it appears others) try to either convoy an army or move an army that borders the sea, entering the final combo box of the order takes a very long time and I recently had to click the "No" button to allow Internet Explorer to continue around 16-18 times per order to get them to "stick".
