Detroit, Ontario, CANADA.
A proposal.

haha, speaking for Canadians... we don't want it!
dexter morgan (225 D(S))
26 Mar 10 UTC
somehow I suspect that, with a name like that, mapleleaf is a Canadian as well. OK, mapleleaf... what is the reason for your proposal?
mapleleaf (0 DX)
26 Mar 10 UTC
Detroit is a disgrace. Go to Google street view, and check out this "once thriving" metropolis. The downtown core consists of the odd high rise office complex surrounded by blocks of parking lots. That's it. Retail? Don't make me laugh. There is none.

Now go to the suburbs. You do not have to travel far. A few blocks outside of the core will do it. You will find(maybe) one house every two blocks or so surrounded by nothing. The grass has grown over the sidewalks. There are no people. The city is almost utterly deserted. Nature has taken over due to the astonishing NEGLECT of the United States "government".

What are you jackasses doing with all of your FUCKING MONEY? (I know I know - Iraq, Afganistan etc etc).

Now for my proposal. Give Detroit to Canada. It's on the border. Prime property right on the Great Lakes. In Canada, we have no history of waste and neglect on a scale such as this. Then again, we're not a war-mongering third world banana republic either, so that might explain it.

We will rebuild Detroit.

It's not as if you Americans are actually doing anything with it. (the farming proposal is a noble one, but, with your "government", it's a non-starter).

Shame........
akilies (861 D)
26 Mar 10 UTC
@maple- you're asking the wrong people, If i had it my way i'd keep all my money and move to some other country.

and why would you want to rebuild detroit, it is detroit because it is rundown, if it was all nice and pretty we wouldn't be able to call it detroit. and have you heard of New Orleans? talk about neglect, sure they made their recovery and won a super bowl, but trust me if anyone has been down there lately, huge portions of the city are still how they looked after the flood went back down.

If Wayne County got universal Canadian health care, that'd be fine. :) I'd love to become a de facto Canadian citizen overnight...

So the idea is because Canada could supposedly fix Detroit we should take it?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... still don't want it, sorry Detroiters.

Being from Michigan, I agree that Detroit is a disaster. However, this really has nothing to do with the government (you can't make people live somewhere), but a lot more to do with the social dynamics of the area.
KaptinKool (408 D)
26 Mar 10 UTC
Yeah, the U.S. has many vibrant cities, I don't see how you can blame the feds for Detroit.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Holy crap Ontario is big enough already make a new damn province. That's my precondition for giving you Michigan.

I mean whatever it's all just a frozen waste up there anyhow, right? :P

So, let me see if I understand your argument, Mapleleaf:

Thesis: A city on the border is economically distressed compared to it's neighbor.
Therefore, the city should be ceeded to the other nation.

Fair nuff. How's Vancouver doing compared to Seattle?

I don't see how you can say that the suburbs of Detroit are so bad. I live in one, and it is a pretty normal neighborhood. The problem with Detroit is that it was based so strongly on the auto industry. The city will eventually bounce back because of the location. It is in a prime spot for a prosperous city, it will just take a long time for that to happen, imo.

@Thucy: Hey if you want us to become part of Canada, then Texas has to become part of Mexico. I'll take my end of the deal over yours! lol

Chrispminis (916 D)

Wait stratagos, in what sense is Vancouver economically distressed? They're doing mighty fine and have been consistently ranked as one of, if not the, most livable places on Earth. Yes, Seattle does have a strong economy, but with congestion like that, I'd choose Vancouver over Seattle any day. Detroit isn't just comparatively economically distressed... it IS economically distressed. =P

Eh, Canada has a cool history of taking on heavily indebted locales. Newfoundland, 1949. =)
stratagos (3269 D(S))
26 Mar 10 UTC
@Chris - I have absolutely no information on how Vancouver is doing; I was just trying to make a point. It is not beyond the realm of possibility there will come a time where Vancouver's economy is in the toilet while Seattle is kicking ass and taking names.

I just want to hear what Mapleleaf has to say in case the other shoe ever is on the other foot.

Of course, using his logic the United States should just annex Mexico. After a (probably extended) period of adjustment the United States of America and Mexico would probably be fairly impressive economically in relative terms compared to Canada. At which point, following the logic, Canada should be eager for annexation.

For some strange reason I don't see that flying for anyone involved, even ignoring the nationalistic yahoos in each of the three nations ;)
If mapleleaf can get the Canadian and American governments to agree with his proposal, fine. I really don't care. If the Canadians want the city and the associated headache, then fine. It's not like it's an important location or anything. With NAFTA still in effect, it would not be detrimental to the United States in any way. Of course, the Canadian government would have to make dual citizenship avaliable for the citizens of Detroit.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
27 Mar 10 UTC
@strategos - you do not understand my argument.

Detroit is not merely economically distressed. It has been ALLOWED to decline horrifically due to neglect, and inappropriate government spending. How would you feel if the neighbourhood that you grew up in was permitted to decay in this fashion? How would you feel if your son got his legs blown off in Iraq, only to be told that his hometown was unimportant?

Comparative wealth was never the argument.

How do you equate the loss of manufacturing with neglect?
cujo8400 (300 D)
27 Mar 10 UTC
I'm from Windsor, Ontario, Canada and have lived beside Detroit my whole life. Things are definitely brutal there. If you look into the future, it has the opportunity to be completely rebuilt into a new world class city if it can get the right industry in there (green industry perhaps). It would be like a blank canvas to rebuild with.
cujo8400 (300 D)
27 Mar 10 UTC
I should say across, not beside. We are connected by a bridge, a tunnel under the river and they are in the process of building a second bridge.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
27 Mar 10 UTC
We have suffered huge losses in our manufacturing sector in Ontario. Detroit has been marginalized and NEGLECTED. But hey!, that's the American Dream in action. Funny. I don't see much coverage of this on the Fox Comedy Channel.

Period.
Darwyn (1601 D)

mapleleaf, how has Detroit been marginalized and NEGLECTED? As opposed to being decimated by the loss of jobs. I live on the north side of 8 mile. Please enlighten me.

You are comparing a province to a city.
wydend (0 DX)

+1 Darwyn. I don't see how Detroit is any more "neglected" than other big cities. It is just that those other cities aren't centered around a crumbling auto industry.

Wayne County, Michigan, of which Detroit is the county seat, is where Toronto,Ontario dumps their garbage. =P

Darwyn, I'm an Oakland County native. For a whole generation (1970-1990), the governments around Detroit did everything they could to separate themselves from Detroit. I don't know if you were around back then, but it took too long for the suburbs to realize they couldn't be healthy without a city in the middle.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
28 Mar 10 UTC
@ maple - I fail to understand your argument because I feel it is based on a flawed premise: that Detroit has been 'neglected', because that implies that Detroit is somehow owed something that it has been denied.

You seem to feel that Detroit is somehow different from any other city that overspecialized in a particular industry that has then declined. Like, say, Pittsburgh, after steel started being manufactured elsewhere.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but ultimately it's irrelevant - Detroit is having problems now. They've had them for awhile, and they'll continue to have them for a bit longer. Will they ever regain their prior size and position as a manufacturing hub? It's unlikely - but that just means that the people that choose to live there need to find other industries to branch out into.

Or they can continue to stagnate. It's really up to them. But throwing billions of dollars at them isn't going to do jack, because the demand for automobiles isn't going to somehow massively increase if you throw cash at them.
warsprite (152 D)

I could help if you throw a billion my way. I could by a nice size fleet of cars.

So, I am going to start learning a coding language, and I'm considering either C++, Python, Java, or basic HTML (those are the only classes my school offers). Post your best "First World Problem" you can think of, i.e., something that you've really let annoy you, but then you realize there are people who are getting their toes blown off by errant land mines planted 40 years ago in Southeast Asia, and you realize your problem is trivial.

Example: I'm so pissed off that as soon as I bought an HD DVD player, the Bluray standard gained traction and now I can't get any new movies on HD DVD.

22417 is the game ID. 2 turns in a row I've ordered Isauria to Miletus, assuming I'd merely forgotten the first time and thus being particularly careful the second time. However, the Army in Isauria REFUSES to move to Miletus. I am confused.
