Random survey!
Who here reads? (meaning books that are longer than 300 pages)
Of those who read, who reads fantasy? what do you read, and who's your favorite author?

I hate to be argumentative, but no Clancey novel I've ever read was worth the time spent.

That said, I agree about Card. Excellent writer.

Excellent* ; )

@jwalters,

I'm surprised to hear that; I, of course, have to recommend you give them another shot.

As to HP: I think they are great as children's books, but even in Middle School I found them a bit dull. I don't see any merit they have for adults.

I haven't read as much as I like too since starting college, but I used to read non-stop. Stephen Lawhead is one of my favorites, especially his series about King Arthur. I also really like Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. :D

Tom Clancy is ok, but not really my favorite genre. Rainbow 6 was good, but all of his books seem to be basically the same thing. Kind of like Grisham, who I like, but if they write enough books, then they start to become predictable.
Hunter49r (189 D)
22 Mar 10 UTC
@ lulzworth- I would agree that the length of the book shouldn't really matter. There are a lot of shorter books that are classics or good reading. Fahrenheit 451 comes to mind, which is only a couple hundred pages long. :D

Locke, how old are you? i just ask because i just finished reading the 1st locke lamora book, yes it was alright, definitely a page turner, exciting story and all but.... for me a book loses something if they make the main character smarter, faster, trickier and just plain better that anyone else character. It may appeal to younger readers and it is an exciting story but

as for steve erikson, i cant get his books at all, i read the first one and felt is was improbable and implausible. The opposite of a well thought out logically tight "realistic" fantasy of saw someone like RR Martin/robin hobb . Erikson was like getting drugged half eleven Norse God invading mount Olympus, flying golden Pegasi and wielding flaming magic swords 30 feet long. Rather than flesh out why his characters continue to serve a war they didnt believe in or a boss they was conspiring to kill them he just layered more and more magic rings, flaming swords, reincarnated wizards etc etc

@abgemacht,
yeah, i keep meaning to finish the buggers off, i just never do it. we own the trilogy, and i'm constantly picking it up and thinking, "hey, i should really read this...." i guess it's just the fact that we have it around the house, and it's not going anywhere. the ones that you get from the library are just a higher priority, because you have a deadline in which to finish them. ya know?

also, i'm glad to find that not everyone who plays board games online lives there too. huzzah for actual activities that don't envolve sitting in front of a screen. :P

has ANYONE read the Christopher Paolini books? i thought that they were great. he finished the first one by age 15, and it instantly became a very well known book, if that says anything....
LockeLamora (100 D)
22 Mar 10 UTC
I'm pretty sure Paolini published at 19, not 15. And he BEGAN his writing when he was 15 (he graduated HS at this age), but finished after graduation. I for one am not a fan.

Sean: I am 20. And you're right to some extent, Mr. Lamora has a knack for making things work, but I do not think he is, as you put it, "smarter, faster, trickier and just plain better" than the other characters. Smarter and trickier perhaps, but that's why he's the "hero." He certainly got his chain yanked by the Grey King and his mage. Sure he beat them (he is the hero after all), but he lost three of his best friends in the process (sorry for spoilers, tough luck). And if you read the sequel, similar situations arise. One could also easily make the case that he does not succeed in the second book.
jwalters93 (288 D)
22 Mar 10 UTC
bah. i may have my facts wrong, but that still doesn't accout for the fact that it's a very young age to publish a book. and have it become extremely popular. still i say to you bah. i really like those books.
LockeLamora (100 D)
22 Mar 10 UTC
I don't think publishing young did him any favors. Yes his books may have had their 15 minutes of fame, but I honestly don't think they're very good. I think he and his books would have been well served with a few extra years of work and instruction.

ah well. different people like different things. you read the harry potter books? i love 'em. very well writen.(and i might add that they completely blow the stupid twilight books out of the water.)
LockeLamora (100 D)

I happen to agree. I think Rowlings deserves more credit than she is often given. And Twilight makes me puke.

@Jacob - why stop at the trilogy? He should read the Simarilian as well!

22 Mar 10 UTC
jimgov, yes , ok there were no 30 foot flaming swords or half elven drugged norse gods...twas a joke, but there was floating castles, magic swords,supernatural events galore and reincarnated wizards in the 1st book.

Reading is wonderful. I read ten times more books a few years ago than I do now, mostly because I don't have Dial-Up anymore. Some of my favorite books were Arthur Conan Doyle's tales of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I feel they trump most modern mysteries in all respects. There's plenty of jokes, plenty of suspense and intrigue, and a fair amount of action too.
In terms of fantasy, well, it depends on what you wanna stick into that genre. I liked The Chronicles of Narnia, with the glaring exception of The Horse and his Boy. I don't really know if you would call The Bartimaeus trilogy fantasy, but if you do it gets my vote. Eragon and Eldest were enjoyable as well, but I think Brisingr was just a bit too much for me. I could only endure so many chapters detailing the particulars of dwarf politics before I had to give up.

Anyone read any of Steven Brust's books? His Dragaeran series are the most well known but he has a lot of really good single novels. I think it is fairly safe to say he is my favorite Fantasy author.

My favorite single Fantasy novel is Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. She's only written a few other things, but her characters, setting, and ability to describe things just makes it a wonderful tale.

@ KK- I've read the Simirilian, and I think it might actually be my favorite of the 5. :D

I also love the Chronicles of Narnia, and unlike a drrobotnik the Horse and His Boy is my favorite one (along with Voyage of the Dawn Treader). I have a Focus on the Family Radio Theater version of them and they are a joy to listen to as well as read.

I also like Tom Clancy, but this is at the level of distraction reading.
I enjoyed Terry Brooks "Magic Kingdom-For Sale" series for pure pleasure reading.

@drrobotnik

I really enjoy Sherlock Holmes, as well, but I like Hercule Poirot much better. I feel like he's a much more realistic character and it's not quite as out-dated in some areas.

Paoloni's books had some interesting ideas such as the magic, but they lacked in so many areas, especially originality and rational characters.

My favorites include for Fantasy: LOTR and the Silmarillion, Wheel of Time, Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson (I'm surprised no one has mentioned this incredible new series whose author is writing the end of the Wheel of Time series), I am looking forward to A Song of Ice and Fire next

Science Fiction: most of O. S. Card's books, everything by Asimov, World War Z, currently reading The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and Fullmetal Alchemist if you include manga

Historical Fiction: Ivanhoe and Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott, Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure by Jeff Shaara

i was actually writing a fantasy novel before i realized how very cliche the whole idea was. wo, i threw it out and began anew. as far as i know, no one has written anything that is close to my idea. originality, here i come! :P

Learning a coding language
So, I am going to start learning a coding language, and I'm considering either C++, Python, Java, or basic HTML (those are the only classes my school offers). Which do you guys think is the most versatile and useful language? I'm a complete newbee when it comes to programming, so any suggestions at all would be great.

First world problems
Post your best "First World Problem" you can think of, i.e., something that you've really let annoy you, but then you realize there are people who are getting their toes blown off by errant land mines planted 40 years ago in Southeast Asia, and you realize your problem is trivial.

Example: I'm so pissed off that as soon as I bought an HD DVD player, the Bluray standard gained traction and now I can't get any new movies on HD DVD.

Ancient World - Isauria cannot move to Miletus?
22417 is the game ID. 2 turns in a row I've ordered Isauria to Miletus, assuming I'd merely forgotten the first time and thus being particularly careful the second time. However, the Army in Isauria REFUSES to move to Miletus. I am confused.
