Wow, kestas... I need to keep my mouth shut it appears and check out the code. It looks like you have it setup the same way I had imagined in my head :)
Yeah, I figured it would be 'extra data in the db' kinda thing... but moving to or from a major release can require db changes and migration paths/scripts... so it wouldn't be the end of the world, just a PITA for any developer that wants to move up a level but lose a variant...
FA is different from Gunboat, because there is at least implied diplomacy and a multiplayer dynamic and balance of power. FA is purely tactical.
Also, vamos, I lurk around here every now and then and try to keep up with the one or two games that I have on this site. Otherwise I'm not really active... I don't even know what all the fancy new moderator doohickies do yet! =)
Looks like Ancient Mediterranean, Colonial, and Imperium are probably the most likely 3 right now (since a 2 player variant in a 5 variant line-up doesn't fit).

Sorry to post a question that has probably been asked a million times before but when calling for a pause of the game does each player need to vote pause or just a simple majority? In other words does pausing the game have to be a unanimous decision?
Sorry to borrow an old title. I may also be asking a question that has been asked many times before. I was searching through the pages here and hadn't found it after about 20 pages though... so here goes: Can you start a classic game with fewer than 7 players, or do you have to have all spots filled?
