Meta gaming in gunboat games
In this gunboat game, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?g'ameID=17712 ,
Russia, Germany, and Italy are playing an alliance...

I would like to thing it was natural and not just cheating but the Autumn 1902 move of Russia in galicia supporting Italy' s Tyrolia to Vienna was the first real recognition of this cheating communication.

A recent contract game was drawn, but we are starting a new one. Those players have all been invited, and we need at least 1 more player. Interested in some Contract Negotiations?

Units missing from map in pre-game
Hi, I'm new here and am a little confused.
In game #18940 it's in pre-game, and orders have been placed, but no units appear on the map.
In game#19581 it's in the same phase, but units do appear.
Any idea why units are missing from the first game? Thanks!

Question/Suggestion
I think there should be a SEARCH function button where one can search for a particular user.... eg: I am trying to find the Captains of the Australian World Cup teams and its impossible.
Unless they EVER post on this forum again, i won't spend days and days trawling thru the forum posts of yesteryear in order to find them...

Or is there another way to do this?

Isn’t It Funny . . . .
Isn’t it funny how some players\allies, after missing a turn or making wrong moves, and in doing so put both themselves as well as their counterpart at risk of takeover believe that the other player is still obligated to blindly support and\or work with them due to an agreed upon alliance? And if you don’t you are ‘stabbing’ them. Couldn’t those above actions be loosely be considered ‘a stab’ in and of themselves?
jbalcorn (429 D)

Since when do you need justification for a stab?

When an alliance is no longer beneficial (and perhaps a NMR is enough to make it so), then do what you will. But don't ask for justification, it won't change the fact that the stabee will feel that you did them wrong!

What does it matter? If you stabbed someone, you stabbed someone, deal with it.
Carpysmind (1423 D)

Justification? Deal with it? I guess neither of you understand the point or are supporting it? All I was trying to do was bring to light and find id there are those who have had a similar experiences in which they too have had opposing players who have gotten all bent out of shape when you no longer acknowledge or unwilling to continue an alliance due to their own ‘miss steps’.

Just say you still want to work together, ask for explanation and apology, become even angry if it suits you. Only to screw them over once again.

NMRs and little communication, half truths and lies are prefect reasons to stab.
Ursa (1617 D)

And yes, I've experienced it - but in a game that's still active.

I don't think you can ever expect people to be ok about you attacking them when previously you were allied, unless they attacked you first
Alderian (2425 D(S))
21 Jan 10 UTC
I disagree dave. If I'm allied with someone and they don't turn in moves, then they are stabbing me. I may be completely screwed because of their NMR.

And if they aren't back communicating before the last time I check the game before the end of the next phase, I'll be doing what I can to take my share of their centers. What am I supposed to do? Just let all my enemies take their centers when I have no idea whether they will be back or not?

And I'll start renegotiating with others right away. Again, I've got to cover my own butt, especially since they failed to cover it last turn. Besides, if they come back and things are okay, I can use the renegotiations to possibly stab my enemies.

But don't come back from an NMR and bitch to me about me breaking up with you. You are the one that broke up with me with the NMR.

@Alderian
I'm not saying you have no right to stab... you have every right to, and often should stab in that situation, but of course they're going to do everything they can, including bitching, and calling you a stabber, to make you re ally them... you can't expect them to let you walk through them if you miss a move. You should be prepared for them to complain
Carpysmind (1423 D)

@Dave @Alderian
Yes Alderian, exactly! The minor flaw with your thinking Dave is exactly mine and Alderian’s point (I think?). If one is sitting on the game page board watching the clock slowly run out with orders saved, based on agreements with another player your allied with, and that player does neither sign-in or place orders then that very act is a ‘stab’.

Therefore, you hold out till the very last moment, with every intention of honoring the arranged agreement on moves, and subsequently change them due to that player not being participatory your moves against them are NOT a ‘stab’ but a reaction to being ‘stabbed’.
Carpysmind (1423 D)
21 Jan 10 UTC
right Alderian?
dave bishop (4694 D)
21 Jan 10 UTC
I reckon that if you were the one who couldn't make a deadline for reasons outside your control, you wouldn't hold back from doing everything you could to convince your ally that he was stabbing you... How can you not expect them to try and keep you with them?
You're probably right that you have good reason for moving against him, but don't complain if he doesn't agree is what I'm saying
Alderian (2425 D(S))
21 Jan 10 UTC
Yes, Carpysmind.

Dave, you are right, they should do everything they can to fix things or change things up in their favor or whatever. But, the fact remains that the person committing the NMR is the one who failed the alliance no matter how much they cry foul.

guilt
I think I've posted something similar about this in the past....
But, one thing I really dislike about diplomacy is the guilt that I carry throughout the game that will only get heavier and heavier as the game finishes.

Something Fishy
Please observe France and Russia's behavior in this game. Another note - Russia never sent any messages to anybody else in this game. And France was pretty tight lipped too...perhaps too busy entering in their several orders to notice they had messages?

And Somewhere the John, Bobby and Ted Kennedy cry, "Can't We Catch ONE Break?"
The Republicans win the MAS. election, and can now stop health care and play a stonewall to Obama's idea... and on the seat the Ted Kennedy sat for for nearly 50 years and dreamt of health care and all... it dies.

Thoughts on the political outfall (and the Kennedys REALLY ARE CURSED!) ;)
