another bug^^
if a unit has nowhere to retreat to, you are only able to update but not finalize because your not given any option to select (because there would be none).

this unnecessarily prolongs the turn:(

I am attacking from territory A and support that move from B. But B is attacked (and defeated), does that stop the support move? Or will my unit in B support the other move of mine and after that retreat because of the attack on itself? thanks for help

I'm Interested- A Multi-National Rushmore?
I'm curious, folks.
In light of Obama's Nobel Peace Prize (and for how I feel about that, it's in the thread concerining it, but to summarize- I like Obama... but even HE doesn't think he's worthy of that yet!) I'm pondering the great leaders of the last century:

Brits, Americans, and all others- WHO have been the 4 Leaders of Nations YOU would pick for a 1900-Now Mt. Rushmore?

Constantinople
Ever wonder why its called Constantinople? After all, the Ottomans had renamed it Istanbul 400 years before 1901.
TiresiasBC (388 D)
09 Oct 09 UTC
They didn't officially rename it, they just called it Istanbul, which means "The City." Just like the Romans called Rome "The City," and the Byzantines called Constantinople "The City" before the Ottomans conquered it, because they were the biggest cities around and the center of everything.

It wasn't renamed until the policy of renaming everything with a Turkish name began. Which, if I recall, wasn't until after Ataturk became president, in the 1920s.

I'm sure more precise information is elsewhere, but I haven't looked it up.

I remember Turkish facebook users grouped together to vote-down the Facebook webDiplomacy app because it "misrepresented Turkey" somehow, maybe this is what they meant. But I don't know why the guys at Avalon Hill called it Constantinople
Onar (131 D)

Why they changed it, I can't say,
Maybe they liked it better that way?

Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks.
warsprite (152 D)
09 Oct 09 UTC
It was 1930 the name was changed. As to why, it had alot to do with the conflict between the Greek and Turkish nationalist. During which many Greeks where killed and driven out of what we now call Turkey.

JECE (1322 D)
10 Oct 09 UTC
The name was officially only changed to Istanbul in 1923. For a true misrepresentation of Turkey, see a map of Europe in 1900: http://www.euratlas.com/history_europe/europe_map_1900.html

they are so obscure I thout there were only two of us on the planet. They just released a new album too. Meet the Sciences I think is the name
djbent (2572 D(S))

They Might Be Giants enjoyed moderate commercial success. a hell of a lot more than 2 people listened to them. and the first couple posts in this thread were quotes from that famous song, istanbul.

Lol I was listening to them in the earlier half of the 90s. Almost no one I've ever spoken with has even heard of them. While listening to NPR just last week they were on promoting their new album.

@ warsprite: The way you phrased that made it sound like the Turkish nationalists just killed a bunch of Greeks and kicked the rest out of the country, just because they were Greek. That's partly right, but you have to remember that it was in the context of a war in which the Greeks tried to invade Turkey to carve it up after the fall of the Ottomans. The Greeks were by no means blameless.

I would never agree with changing the names of geographical locales for political ends.
Onar (131 D)

@JECE - you mean in the game? Or in real life?

Didn't Greece recieve control of a few island groups offf the coast of Turkey a few decades ago? Or am I remembering wrong?
Hereward77 (930 D)
10 Oct 09 UTC
You're right JECE, I think the area should still be called Thrace and Turkey itself is really 'Asia Minor' before all that pesky political rearrangement ;)
warsprite (152 D)
10 Oct 09 UTC
@JECE According to Wickipedia, and Britannica it was 1930.
warsprite (152 D)
10 Oct 09 UTC
The main reason the Greeks did so was of the genocidal policies against Greeks in Pontus and Western Anatolia during WWI by the Young Turk goverment. Plus promises from the Western Allies for control over areas of Greek majority. Minorties such as the Greeks, Armenians and Kurds had hundreds of thousands killed.

The above was for Musta Kemal 63
JECE (1322 D)

Onar: I mean real life, and throughout the world. I would like to clarify that I disagree with changing the names of geographical locales for any reason. I am relieved, for instance, that much of North America west of the Misissippi still uses Spanish place-names and Strasbourg is still named Strasbourg.

warsprite: You're right. I misread "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Istanbul#Istanbul". The name was officially changed March 28, 1930.
