Spies are Everywhere Game Variant - Who's in?
Post your interest here
A week or so ago, I came up with an idea for a variant called 'Spies Are Everywhere'. The basic premise is that 1/3 of your orders are intercepted.

At the midway point of the phase (moves only, retreats and builds do not count), you need to publish 1/3 of your orders on the global tab.

So if you have 1-2 units, you are unaffected. If you have 3-5 units, you need to publicly publish one order (My army in Venice will be going to Trieste), 6-8 units you need to publish 2, etc.

The game is on the honor system, so I don't think we'll have much problems with people entering the moves they say they will. I do think, however, we may have the case where someone misses the midway point and fails to publish in time. We need to come up with some kind of punishment that everyone agrees to before hand. Possible solutions are
1) The next country alphabetiaclly picks your move, or we will come up with a random order of countries before hand, and the first country will pick the first missed move, the 2nd country the 2nd missed move, etc.
2) You must publicize 2/3 of your moves next turn. This is an interesting idea, because, depending on what you are planning, you might then INTENTIONALLY miss a move, knowing that your moves will be so obvious next turn that you don't mind publishing 2/3?

I'm hoping to find 6 other players who are available to play this over the next few weeks without needing a pause (emergencies may arise, but if you have a planned vacation, I'm hoping you skip this game), and who can make the time committment to check in at the halfway point of each phase to publish their moves).

Please post your interest here. I'm going to get a regular game going at 50 D and 24 hour phases. If people have different requirements, please post them here.
(also, if anyone would be interested in trying this as a gunboat game, please let me know as well).
I like the 2/3 option but I'd prefer to play with players who wouldn't make much mistakes.

is this a WTA or PPSC? I am in if it is a WTA, I'm not a fan of gunboat but I'd consider it.

I don't think this is a great variant to try with the current engine - I like the idea but I'd suggest you try to run it ftf (where it would work quite nicely) and if it's fun then get involved with the coding and implement it here (or on the judges). I think you'll find it very difficult to get people to play on the honour system at 50pts a pot (you might well get a trial game at 5pts but I think you'll find the experience very disappointing). Sorry to sound negative
Parrelel, I'll chalk your negativity up to your newness on the site. There have been a great many variant games played successfully on this site. Your theory is based on conjecture. Based on my experience here, variant games based on the honor system do frequently work. I have played quite a few (mostly gunboats), and while a few had cheaters and/or suspected cheating, most have been quite successful.

And unlike a gunboat game, if you cheat in this game, it will be obvious (if you don't post your move, or change it, it will be apparent to all). I don't expect it too difficult to find 6 other people who will adhere to those rules. My worry is more fear of people accidentally missing their moves than with cheating.

You should try a variant before you poopoo the system.

(And incidentally, this one will have invitations and a password).

Why do you think that someone new to this site would have a less valid opinion on the workability of any given variant? I honestly don't think you'll have a satisfying experience and am suggesting you try some alternative way of working round it - you don't have to take my advice but I see no reason for you to belittle it.
"Why do you think that someone new to this site would have a less valid opinion on the workability of any given variant? "

Because you probably haven't actually tried any variant which require participants to adhere to an honor system, so you can see the pitfalls, but you don't have the experience to know whether they can be successful.

I think a newbie would have just as valid of an opinion regarding whether the idea for a variant would work or not. But if your sole objection is that you don't think people would abide by the rule, then yes, I think perhaps you should try a variant before forming your opinion.
I had planned to make this WTA
So is misinformation legal? That is realizing that your orders have been intercepted so you publish all of your moves 2/3 lies and 1/3 truth. :-)

i m interested in this psychotic variant as well
No Crazy. For this particular variant, you would have to publicly state 1/3 of your moves. As a suggested punishment for missing your announcement, you would have to publish 2/3.

Dingle,

Parallel is playing in one of my variants with set alliances. Just putting it out there that he has played a variant to form an opinion about this variant. In my variant, two players have already missed turns when I emphasized commitment to play the game. I can see why he would say that the workability of this variant needs some kinks to work out as my variant has very rigid rules but is also based on the honor system. No variant is perfect. The game variant I created *still* has issues even after one try before this one and about a month of coming up with the rules before that.

Perry,

How did it feel to get shafted? :P
Steven, as I said, some times they don't work, but I've played quite a few and had many more successes than failures. If you base an opinion of a statistical sampling of one, your results may not be the same as if you had a greater statistical sampling.
And frankly, I don't think I insulted him in any way. he said 'sorry for being negative', and I said 'i'll chalk up his negativity to newness on the site'.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
07 Sep 09 UTC
I didn't say you insulted him. I'm just saying that maybe your variant needs some work. And I'm still testing my variant and will keep testing it to make sure it's a feasible, workable variant. I agree with Parallel when he says that people will find it hard to play on the honor system with a 50 point bet game(unless players with more points joined).
I sugggest you start off at a 5 point bet and if the first game is successful then you can raise the bet. This is just advice by the way. : )

*suggest*(typo)
I don't think people find it hard to play on the honor system. The game will be password protected, which means I will choose who plays and who doesn't. So hopefully it will be people I've played against, or talked with enough in the forum that I think they will commit to the game. And its not the honor system that's the problem. Even with your game, it wasn't the honor system, it was that people missed moves.

I have a few rules questions you may wish to clarify before you embark
a) What happens if someone misses the spy deadline by a minute - do they pay the penalty (if not then what about 2,5,10,30 mins?)
b) What happens if someone misses the spy deadline through no fault of their own (e.g. Webdip having a go slow) and so doesn't think they should pay the penalty? Similarly, what happens if the timings appear differently (by, say, a minute) on two people's clients [sounds like it shouldn't happen but you'd be in no position to check]
c) What happens if someone miscalculates 1/3 of their units and shows too few unit moves
d) What happens if someone misses two consecutive spy deadlines
e) What happens if someone publishes moves and then replans, accidentally changing the move for one of the units already published
f) Is it acceptable for a player to deliberately not publish spy information, willing to pay the penalty next season
g) Is it acceptable for a player to deliberately publish incorrect spy information, willing to pay the penalty next season.
The problem is that you can't submit information in advance of the deadline without passing information to the other players and so everyone is going to want to push as close to the deadline as possible (or at least that would be a winning, and it seems to me, reasonable strategy) which means that the down to the minute stuff is going to come up a lot more than you might think.
Parallel, thats exactly what this thread is for. When we have 7 players for the game, we will decide amongst ourselves. My own opinion

a) Pay penalty
b) Pay penalty
c) Pay penalty
d) Well, thats the risk we take. If that happens, I think the game fails. Or a penalty such as you have to submit ALL Your moves for 2 turns.
e) See d above. Thats what the honor system is for
f) Yes it is acceptable in my opinion.
g) No, that is a violation of the honor system

And yes, thats the idea, you don't necessarily want to publish your info without seeing others first. Its a gamble to wait and a gamble to go first.

Good idea Dingle. Ill be an 8th player if you need another to fill the game or sub in if they go CD. You probably want to play with other people after all the time sunk together in the league games.

Let me suggest a 50 hour phase and have a rule be to Finalize so people remember to publish or don't let the turn slip on them. Or they publish moves too soon and then change their mind. You may get confusing republishing.
Ag, You are more than welcome to join the game as a regular rather than a sub. Except for Draug Queen, I have no bad memories of the league.
So I think we have 7 people agreeing to a 50pt, 24hr WTA game.
The 7 are:
OMGNSO, Maniac, Trim, DingleberryJones, Hellalt, Ag7433 and Sayjo THe LionHearted.

So I would propose the following rules
1) You must publish your moves by the 12 hour mark. If you are late, you pay the penalty the next turn.
2) You must publish 1/3 of your moves, rounding down. 3 units, publish 1, 6 units, publish 2, etc.
3) You may NOT publish false moves. You may NOT change your moves once published (even if willing to pay the penalty the next turn).
4) After missing publishing moves, you must publish 2/3 of your moves the following turn. After missing 2 turns in a row, you must publish ALL moves. (Please lets not let it get to this point).

Questions for the players -
Can you deliberately miss a turn and publish 2/3 next turn?
(And just in case it comes up, 1/3 of 2 units is zero, but 2/3 of 2 units is 1. So if you miss publishing while you have 3 units but the next turn you are reduced to 2, you will still have to publish 1, since 2/3 of 2 is 1.) I feel yes, you can deliberately miss a turn, but lets vote on it.

I'm hoping that the 7 of us want to try to abide by the spirit of the rules we create, rather than try to slide through loopholes we miss.

think wta is wrong for trying out a variant game but thats my personal opinion, plus if its 24hr limit it only gives 12hr for diplomacy i would make it 36hr
