New Variant: Weird alliances
Has anyone ever tried a variant where you're required to ally with a certain person for a certain amount of time? (Maybe three years?) I think it would be really cool, especially if you come up with some interesting alliances. After that initial period though, you could ally with whoever you wanted to, and stab whoever you wanted to... More below

Moderator please unpause our game!!!
This game, link: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11392

has been on pause because of one player for I think slightly over a week now. The player did not leave a message reporting an extended absence before the pause was voted for, and I don't believe he was the original voter for the pause. Is there any way you can issue him as a civil disorder and unpause the game so we can finally play?

A bug with supporting a convoy.
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11598#orders

This isn't a big deal Kestas, but I figured I'd let you know. As Russia, my fleet in Baltic can support a move to Prussia, but if any unit were moving to Prussa, it would have to be convoyed through the Baltic. When I select it, it says no options available, you can't perform this order, so it's not really a problem, I just figured I'd let you know.

There's no way figle is a woman - his (for I am fairly sure) style of writing is all wrong.
Edi could convince everyone that he's actually a woman...

@trim, Little Britain did get shipped over to America, hence why they started making Little Britain USA. So they might get it...

Akroma, generally speaking, a woman will write in a different way to a man. They will tend to use different vocab, and have slightly different styles of writing. I do not claim to be easily able to spot the women on this site through the way they write, as I don't have a large enough sample size, and, in addition, a lot of the stuff that gets talked about here is Dip-related, and therefore has a narrow range of vocab.

Speech patterns are something entirely different, and are (as far as I'm aware) unique to individuals. They also have very little to do with writing.

I use funny sentence structures alot of the time, for instance.
Akroma (967 D)

for example ?

Define funny. Funny "ha-ha" or funny... Weird?
jman777 (407 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
funny "haha". no, jk. such as "I highly doubt that he, being the man he is, would ever join your cause." it's not that they're really weird....just that people aren't used to certain ways of putting things.
Onar (131 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
I think that extra comma is what makes it look weird. after "being the man he is." Other than that, it looks fine to me.
Then again, I am a writer, so that kind of nit-picking comes as second-nature.
jman777 (407 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
yeah, it's pretty much the overuse of commas that makes them seem strange. But if I read to much old'ish English literature they start to get a little bit more odd, just because for some reason I tend to pick up the writing style of whoever's book I'm currently reading.
Onar (131 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
Ah, I do that as well. Haven't read anything major in a while, though. Mostly graphic novels and the like, lately.
jman777 (407 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
yeah, I just started reading (again) books by this guy G.A.Henty, and he wrote really good historical fiction in the late 19th century. he's from england of course, and they're really good books (if you like historical fiction of course).
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

The sentence:

"I highly doubt that he, being the man he is, would ever join your cause."

- is correct.

The following would be incorrect:

1. "I highly doubt that he, being the man he is would ever join your cause."

2. "I highly doubt that he being the man he is, would ever join your cause."

3. "I highly doubt that he being the man he is would ever join your cause."

All wrong.

The use of the commas in the sentence quoted by jman777 is as parenthesis. It could equally be written thus:

"I highly doubt that he (being the man he is) would ever join your cause."

or even, to use a slightly more journalisitic style:

"I highly doubt that he - being the man he is - would ever join your cause."

The use of parenthesis like this allows you to insert extra information into the more basic structure of the sentence. The main part of the sentence is:

""I highly doubt that he would ever join your cause."

You use the parenthesis to add "being the man he is" without disrupting the flow of the sentence too much.

Onar (131 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
Aren't figs both male and female? You're saying he reproduces asexually? Or is that all mods?
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Jun 09 UTC
There are no mods, there is only one mod. Like a fig, they reproduce into other mods, but all are essentially one mod. Fig-lesquidge was the first mod, and the source for all other mods. In days of old, when Kestas looked up phpDip and saw what he created and declared it was good, he said unto the board "Let there be mods." and fig came into being... The rest, as they say, is myth and legend.
