Hm, can you do me? I think I'm in the top 3 google searches of my name unfortunately (along with a very bad picture of me from a while ago); finding my birthplace should be a challenge though. If you can find the house I moved from ~6 years ago on Google Maps (once you get its location, it should be very easy to tell from other houses), you get a cookie.

Just thought I'd join in. Looks alright now, and thankfully exams are now over so i can return to random developing stuff and multihunting.
(Yes there is more to life I know, and I spend most of my time doing other stuff, mainly sport (Why do American's put an S on sport?), but i had to completely stop during exams). Right, I'll have a look in a bit assuming no-one else has started Qoou

ewwwww you guys put an s after math????

well because its mathematics (sp its still got an s on the end) so it makes sense

Well, it's sports because there is more than just one sport.... :)
trim101 (363 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
no you play sport its different
Chrispminis (916 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
trim, then would you spell it math's with an apostrophe to indicate the missing letters?
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Actually, you play sports or you play A sport. The former means you are involved in more than one sprt and the second means you are only involved in one. You Brits need to learn English <grin>.
Captain Dave (113 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Chrisp, no, because it's the pluralisation of an abbreviation (or I can only assume that's why US English calls it Math). So writing Math's would be like writing pea's - which is something that really annoys me, mostly because it implies laziness as it is a relatively simple rule to learn!

Draug, one plays sport - it's deliberately vague. Why would anyone ever say "I play a sport," when surely you could just say "I play football/football/rugby/tennis, etc."? You cannot play two different sports at once (yes, sport is still a countable noun in British English), therefore you cannot 'play sports' :-P - and I wish there was a better way to represent me poking my tongue out at the screen!

Well, I've told you quite a bit myself trim, and there are some gaping privacy issues around me, several of which are due to my former school!

Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Cpt Dave, are you saying I can't throw a man out at home whiloe jumping over a hurdle? Then you haven't seen me play third base when the runner is coming in cleats high.
Captain Dave (113 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Ahh, Draug, you would have a point, but any combination of different sports would surely be a new sport? Like the Biathlon or Triathlon [cross-country skiing and shooting, and swimming, cycling and running, respectively, for anyone who doesn't know], which are very much sports in their own right.

And what you do in your own home is no concern of mine!
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
LOL! That woul dbe an interesting sport. Put hurdles in the base path and make the runners jump over them as they go around the bases. We could call it hurdleball.
Captain Dave (113 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
By the way, I have no idea what you're talking about (apart from the hurdling). I'm guessing it might have something to do with baseball, but, since I can't stand baseball (except perhaps on the Wii), I can't be sure!
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Yes, American (and Japanese) baseball. The runner runs around a diamond path to touch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base before going "home" which is where he started, at home plate. So put the hurdles between each of those bases and make the runner jump them after hitting the ball. But we'd have to reduce the number of players trying to catch that ball or never one would ever get to first base (well within the confines of the game, teen boys will still try to hit homeruns with their girlfriends or prostitutes).
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
It would make the seduction allegory all the more poignant, though I would say most of the hurdles are before first base. =)

Yeh, in that case maybe you could sneak out after the match when no-ones looking, then you go to 3rd and no-one would be any the wiser

Live Games. What do people think of them?
I have played one live game. And by that I mean 15 minutes turns with the phase set at an hour. I had fun, but it didn't quite work out the way we would have like as three of the players went CD as soon as things didn't go perfectly their way, which I suspect is common problem.
So I think live games are a brilliant idea in principle, but hard to make work. Has anyone had a better experience? Or are there always problems like the kind I experienced?

The crowd from yesterday's failed attempt plus a couple more might do the trick.

Fastest Game Ever, I Think
If anyone is interested in 8 hours there will be a game with one hour order phases with a buy in of 10 pts. The Name will be "Fastest Game Ever, I Think" I will post the game link in about 8 hours, but only if I get interest from at least 6 people. Please respond! I've never actually done a game like this, but I want to see if a game of Diplomacy can be finished in a day. This takes commitment and skill. Do you have what it takes?

The power of making deals
I'm in a class (Dave Ramsey's "FPU"), and last night our class revolved around getting big deals and the keys to successful negotiation. I knew most of them and the rest made sense. I could make up a situation for all and demonstrate it. The wife asked me "Where'd you learn all that?" From watching the masters of Diplomacy, of course! :D

I thought you were able to convoy an army to attack a costal province with support from an adjacent fleet/army? Ie: Move London to Brest via Convoy. English Chanel convoy London to Brest. Mid Atlantic support London to Brest.
If you can, how do you input this move?
