Techno
I've been out of the techno world for many years now and I have been itching to hear some of the latest good stuff. I don't know how the terms have changed from when I listened to it but generally I'm an ambiance and progressive trance lover. My favorite from back in the day was Aphex Twin and I had good times with DJ Tiesto's Sunrise series, preferably 2 towards the end of my techno culture.

"School of War" Game II
thought it best to start a new thread. please reply to confirm participation (if already named) and/or to show interest.

this is a WTA game with 40 hour phases and 5 point buy in; the goal of the game is to improve the skills of players, particularly newer ones, with in-game advice and commentary on the game from non-players.

Suggestion for Update
Why don't you allow the original make phase to be different from the length of the phases in the game? This would essentially allow a longer time for people joining shorter games.

Seems simple enough to code, and it would certainly come in useful for the "less desirable" mods, or high point games.

Quite hypocritically, I'm going to ask a question about rules
This is hypocritical because I normally suggest to people to download jDip to adjudicate moves, but it won't let me enter this as a valid order, because it isn't. That being said, this site will allow you to finalize like this, I've tested it.

What happens if you order two builds in the same spot? What if its two armies? An army and a fleet?

School of War II - Take Two
Well, it appears we lost the original School of War 2 thread. This is a pity, but we have to do what we can with what we have. Kestas, is it feasable to increase the number of active threads (ie: change the cutoff from 50 to 75)?

Blog for posterity: http://ghost-diplomacy.blogspot.com/
I reckon we would do best to just use this thread as a general discussion about the game, and particular comments of the commentators, and direct responses go on the blog. When the game ends we can post this on the blog too.

well, i am curious now that we have 4 games well underway what the participant's experience has been so far.

id love to hear from both the rookies and the vets about what has worked so far, what has not, how these games might be improved to be more usefull etc.

also anyone out there who is NOT in a game but has been following one or more of the SoW games so far?

I have written and read more press than my other game I've ever played. I don't know if it's to be expected, but that is the biggest and immediate change. I'm also always 'on edge' when I have that game up. I don't know why.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

I think we honestly should have *one* SOW thread - just preface the peanut gallery comments with [SOW2] or something. That will both cut down on clutter and make sure they don't fall off as easily...
djbent (2572 D(S))

you're one to talk hamilton!!! but i'll keep it for the game.
texasdeluxe (516 D(B))

I'm also feeling nervous when I'm in my SoW game! Finding that there is a lot of press also which is great. Is very interesting to read the expert commentary form vets not privy to the diplomacy and see what is actually happening in game where you have some idea of what other players might be thinking and planning.

My tip would be, for anyone who cares, is when talking in game to potential allies/enemies, see what you have to offer your neighbour and what they can offer you. See if you can make a deal. If you think that a neighbour is getting powerful and may have their eye on moving against you, it may even be wise to offer them support somewhere. If you support another power's unit somewhere you may give up that space to them, but at least you have made a friend and you know where that unit is likely to be moving! You don't have to carry through with the support if you get a better offer.

Also; don't be blindly allied and turn your back. There are no true friends in this game (except me of course if you happen to be in my game!)
djbent (2572 D(S))

i heard from a rookie in game 1 that the lack of commentary lately has been a drawback, and that he wished there was more learning from the vets in the game. otherwise, it sounded like it was going well for him.
Babak (26982 D(B))

fexas - thanks for starting this discussion and for your thoughtful comments in the various threads

hamilton - thats good to hear. this may also be a reflection of the wta nature of these games vs ppsc where keeping an ally to the detriment of your own position is a more valid trade-off at times. but interesting observation... wonder if other rookies concur.

pooter - awesome. even if that is the ONE take-away all our rookies have, then SoW will have been worth it. more diplomay = better Diplomacy game.

stratagos - hmmm i actually like this idea... but we would have to limit it to 3-4 games... and every 100 posts or so put up the links for all the games. but if people do adhere to the bracket rules, it really could work and work well. djbent, ghost... other vets and commentaters - what do you all think of this idea? i think it deserves attention and a discussion on how it would be implemented....

djbent - as always thank you for your great work and dedication to the SoW. this could not have happened without you stepping up. and im so glad u saved those comments from the admissions building thread... bc i would hate to hae to re-write all that stuff hahahaa.... what do u think of stratego's idea?
Jacob (2711 D)
09 Jun 09 UTC
strat's idea is a good one

one thing i think is that you should make it clear that rookies should in general be addressing their questions to the expert commentators and not so much to the vets in game.

I suppose it depends on the question. I've had some good general questions from the rooks in the game, but i'm also afraid that some of the other rookies took everything i said as 100% unbiased and in their favor.

Hiya, Yup i'm a bit sad that commentry for SOW1 seems to have disapeared, obv its a slow game but there wasnt that much comment after the E/G/F aliance broke down. For me it's been quite hard to know how to play, whether to ask the vets in game questions and also i found myself not speaking to them as much because they were vets and instead forming more alliances with the rookies around me. I'd have found it really useful to be able to speak to the commentators more, i could prob have emailed them tbh but i'd love this site to have some kind of chat facility or private msg facility so that i could ask them questions privately. Cheers for the idea tho, its def been fun and interesting.

I think the benefits of a combined thread will also include more traffic, and cross pollination - I don't even look at the other SOW threads; I dont have the time.....
Ballack (2571 D)

I have followed game no 3. I must say it is very fascinating to see the thoughts of the commentators. In particular I enjoy that there are two of them, and seeing that they mostly agree, but not always. I have learned a lot just reading this thread.
The only problem I have with the format is that of course observers do always change the observations. The players will at times play differently, not just better but differently, than they would do otherwise. Even the thought that some outsiders will observe the game will do that, but of course mainly the comments they read. And some of these comments may turn into self-fulfilling prophecies.
But overall---great idea!
pootercannon (326 D)

I have been following all of the games, with the exception of #4 - when mine started, I found myself too caught up in it to follow another one, but keeping tabs on the other ones was fun.

I keep thinking that after game 4 is done, it would be a nice 'graduation' to us by letting us play one or two games (rookies only) and then commenting on what we have learned. I think that there are probably enough rookies in the first four games to fill up two separate games. Of course, after that, it should be considered our responsibility to contribute/add to the SoW by commenting or whatever else is needed.

8 hours until SOW2 cycles - have we reached any kind of consensus on a consolidated thread?
Jacob (2711 D)
09 Jun 09 UTC
I'm all for a consolidated thread. We can always break it back up into multiple threads if it doesn't work.

I'd like to hear from Chrisp and anyone else that's a commetator. I can't remember who everyone is.
Babak (26982 D(B))
09 Jun 09 UTC
great conversation - and great additions by some of our observers and rookies here as well - thank you.

Strat - I think we'll wait on the consolidation for a bit until we have some more input - but if we do go with it - I'd ask djbent to start it up and copy/paste some of the 'rules' from the admissions thread that fell off... then to copy/paste the current threads all onto the 'blog' in some fashion so they are saved...

so it'd take a few days at least I'd say ... but I think we are starting to reach a consensus on it.

Biddies - I do apologize - I was supposed to commenton game 1... and I have slacked... been away so much and running errands...

will get a comment up tonight.
Babak (26982 D(B))

djbent and Ghost...

how do you guys think we'd get all the current information from the various threads onto the 'blog'? and I really would like to get your input on strategos' idea...
texasdeluxe (516 D(B))
10 Jun 09 UTC
The big advantage I see is that with 1 thread it is easier to save and not have it fall off the bottom of the page. I also haven't been following the games as closely as I'd like since joining SoW 3. But I'm loving the commentary! I think the commentary does effect the game (which is inevitable) but probably in a good way as the players can see the expert's opinions and adjust their moves and diplomacy accordingly. The diplomacy should still take priority over the commentary obviously, as the experts aren't privy to all the facts (and fictions).
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jun 09 UTC
sorry haven't had a chance to comment, barely keeping up with my games b/c of extremely busy life lately.

i am fine with the combination. i can put some energy into it tomorrow. i think it might get a bit confusing, but we can always disaggregate them again at the end. i'd like to save them all before they drop off the (the current ones) so i'll do that tomorrow, and i'll get with ghostmaker about the blog business.

glad that SoW is going well for so many rookies and vets!! =)
now if we could just get things sorted out so i win #4... =P

I was just reading an article by Jim Burgess and thought, while bumping, I'd post his quote on here as I think it's good advice:

"I should state my strong bias up front, that my view of "Strategy" in Diplomacy is that strategic gains are obtained from creating options that can be exploited in negotiations. Any very strong tactical position, right up to but not including a forced win, can be defeated by an alliance of the other powers on the board. But strategic options create uncertainties that can result in sequences of stronger and stronger tactical positions. And the more options there are, the harder it is for your opponents to garner allies and resources to oppose you. This means that every unit move in the game, even when having no immediate impact, sets you up with options for the future."

I need to go back to nerd land now!
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jun 09 UTC
@ Jim Burgess - well, duh! lol

thanks texas for that thought-provoking paragraph!

so what do people think, should i start the new thread now or soon?
stratagos (3269 D(S))
10 Jun 09 UTC
If we're going to do it soon, I'd prefer we do it now, so I can add the commentary for SOW2 in there instead of a soon to be defunct thread
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jun 09 UTC
alright, i'll copy all the old threads today, mail ghostmaker about how to get them onto the blog, and we can make the new thread today. i'll do it shortly.
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jun 09 UTC
ok i have started it. stratagos and other commentators - yall should somehow indicante your "official commentator-dom" when you post, but i'm not sure what the best way to do that is....
