It was in a really old game, one of mine first. Unfortunately you can't see the units, that's how old it is.
I had the unfortunate draw of Austria, but managed to keep the traditional invaders out for several years. Still, I knew I wasn't expanding anywhere and that my collapse was pretty inevitable. After Italy stabbed me, I decided to go beserk and be as much of a thorn in my enemies' sides as I could. I used every tactical and diplomatic tool available to me and was determined to survive the game. After some, I must say, impressive tactical moves which kept Italy at bay with his initial holding acquired in the stab I realized I had to take some risks. So, in a brilliant move, I predicted what Italy would do and slipped past his navies at the Ionian, and took Tunis. Now I was behind his lines; this is where the craziness began.
While still trying to hold my own at home, I did eventually get pushed from Tunis, but used my now-a-favorite retreating strategies to go first to North Africa, then to the Mid-Atlantic, and then to Spain, turning it an embarrassing red in the French heartland. All the while my empire at home is crumbling as I seemed to have run out of friends, except for Turkey, who was himself on the way out. After some fighting on two fronts I was pushed to Portugal and in the east I was desperately trying to push my way out to the sea to get some mobility. Finally I did, and when I finally lost Portugal I knew the game was almost over. I just had to hang on a bit longer.
I knew that I was about to lose my three remaining SCs, that there was nothing that could be done. So, there being a Turkish fleet in the Ionian... I worked up a plan.
Using what diplomatic clout I had remaining, I got Turkey to convoy my army at Greece into Naples, which was unoccupied by the defunct Italtians. He agreed, and it was done.
I ended the game with one SC, Naples.
