Newbs picking up CDs
Is it just me, or does it seem that a lot of newbs come in and pick up a pile of really bad CD positions, lose them all and get annoyed with the game?

Newbie Question
Hi, diplomacy virgin I'm afraid and a situation occured that I could do with clarification on.. I launched a supported attack that was unfortunately blocked. I find myself unable to move this turn around, the game server saying that I have no units to move this turn. Is this normal when an attack is blocked, that you cannot use those units next turn and what other circumstances can cause this loss of turn situation ? Thanks - Darren

Longest Game Ever?
I'm in a game which has reached 1924 and doesn't look like ending particularly soon, and it got me wondering - which is the longest game that anyone's taken part in? Surely there must be some that went on even longer? [http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7513]

(Following on from those above)
When a warning from your boss causes less annoyance than an NMR

"When you can look at any number, and immediately tell if it's divisible by 7." - No-one knows a shortcut for detecting divisibility by 7 do they?
sceptic_ka (100 D)
28 Feb 09 UTC
@WhiteSammy: "by easily crack-able do you mean randomly guessing or some sort of computer aided trial and error?"
1. Access Points (APs) that have a hidden ESSID
2. APs with a MAC Address White List
3. APs with old fashion WEP keys

Disclaimer :-)
Although 1. and 2. aren't really cracking, 3 certainly is and is might also be against the law so I'm not actually advising anyone to do it no matter how easy it is. The thing is, whatever you do, don't be a dick about it. Just because you could connect to someone's WLAN and download a pile of bit torrent stuff doesn't mean you should. Don't do with other peoples WLANs what you wouldn't like other people to do with yours.

figle, divisibility by seven's shortcut takes alot of remembering:

units + 3xtens + 2xhundreds - thousands + 4xtenthousands - 2xhundredthousands + 1xmillions + 3xten millions +2xhundredmillions - billions etc.

basically, going backwards along the number, sum digits after multiplying by:
1,3,2,-1,-3 or 4,-2
in a loop.

and it should be divisible by 7 if the number is.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

So its not really worth it when you can just use the adjust and simply method (I guess its a proof by contradiction) . For those who don't know what I mean, or don't understand the name. To find if 1352837 is divisible by 7.
If 1352837 is then (subtracting 7) 1352830 is. Drop the 0 (this takes out factor of 10).
135283 is so (adding 7) 135290 is, so test 13529
Continuing:
13529 => 13480 => 1348 => 1320 => 132 => 139 != 140 => NOT
======
Ah, so its +(1,3,2) - (1,3,2) ...
1352837
(7+9+16)-(2+15+6)+1 = 10 != 7 => Not
----
Well, much quicker, but that's a lot to remember!

when you play the game so much at work that your huge number of visits to the site is actually noticed by the IT department, and they block it. And the company has thousands of employees. And they noticed you. >.<

I'm still bitter.

@sceptic_ka - Using anyone's wireless network without their permission is definitely a crime (at least in the UK), and I believe it is classified as theft. AND that's even if it's left completely free of encription (although I personally feel that's akin to inviting everyone to come on in)...

Which leads very nicely to: when you're willing to commit a crime to ensure a stable (or winning) position in a game.

When you listen to the World News at 7 and wonder what this has to do with you getting support into Belgium?

Whne you are the IT Director and start selectively editing the network usage reports that your network engineers give you before routing them up to the President/CEO).
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Mar 09 UTC
So how is my hidden ESSID, white list MAC Address, WPA (not WEP) encrypted network crackable? My network engineers took a shot at it and couldn't do it. I used a random password generator to generate the ESSID and don't allow external/wireless systems to manage the wifi router, only wired internal systems.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Mar 09 UTC
Oh, and neither the router nor any of the systems talking to it allow ad-hoc connections.

ouch maniac! so is cheating on your partner closer to metagaming or multiaccounting?
I've always considered it to be a form of contingency planning, myself. Perfectly legitimate.

youradhere (1345 D)

It's closer to metagaming, since it's out of game communication influenced by out of game factors. Multiaccounting is just confusing.

I'm behind you on this one AMP. It is such a small pot (only 3 points per SC) and the person who started the bitchin' gets her buy in back anyhow. Totally stupid of them to whine about the fact that you wanted to get the biggest win you felt you could. Dip players can be such whiny bitches sometimes.
