Opening Theory: Italy and the Key
Has anyone actually ever made the Key work? I know it should be devastating to see an Italian army in Serbia, and an Austrian in Rumania, but the Italian backstab (A Tri H) happens too often, and that always seems to result in an R/T steamroller flattening Italy (and often Germany too).

Retreat question
If two units, each from a different player, are both bounced in the same turn, and have the option to retreat to the same territory, and both choose that territory, what becomes of the units? Are both disbanded?

Draw Request - "Sharpies get me high"
Kestas, could you please draw this game? http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4321

After a long struggle, we have reached a stalemate, and we all agree that a draw is the right solution. I am Germany. Russia, Italy and Turkey should confirm shortly.

Thanks,

D.

Severely punished for unavoidable temporary civil disorder
I overcame a terrible start in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4330 to get to 14 centres and an overwhelming advantage over the rest of the board. The game was originally a team game with Eng-Ger-Aus versus Fra-Ita versus Tur-Rus. Russia and I had 16 centres between us, far more than any other team, and it was just a case of finishing up.

I'd expected the game to finish a little faster than it did, but I had to leave for a music festival before it was complete. I arranged for my dad to cover all 4 of my games (I was already dead in the 5th), but he had a problem with the internet connection and could only submit orders on some days.

This led to me going CD in this game (Borf is Winning - http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4330), at which point Feckless Clod took over, submitted the final year's move and claimed the victory. I get nothing; he gets about 250-300 points for the win.

This current scoring system really needs to be fixed. There should be penalties for going CD in some games and not others, but you should not have a long-fought victory stolen out from under your nose if you can;t avoid a short absence.

Longest game on record?
I am playing Banded Struggle

What's the longest game anyone has played and is there a record?

Anyone who has played with Darwyn or myself know we are not the same person.
Get a grip you stupid cunt of a child!
Does that sorta language get thru your thick head?

Apologies to others whofind it offensive, its just that dogs (apologies to real dogs) such as Davemorano or is it Davemoron????
are children and there really should either be an IQ quota to play here, or a FEE so that under age kids cannot play without using a credit card for donation!!!

No?
I am in this game and MORON Davemoran has accused myself and Darwyn of meta gaming. Therefore it has EVERYTHING to do with it Fido.
perhaps if we had people of an IQ of 130 or more, then this would not need to be gone thru each and everytime someone asks a SIMPLE question

Woah. Canute. Chill, dude. Fido was right, DaveMorano's statement, and your harangue of a response just have nothing whatsoever to do with "Longest game on record." Please take it to a new post. Or better yet, just let it rest, and let your record speak for itself. :-)

this thread at least...

I was in a game that went till 1929. The longest I've ever seen is 1945, but it was clear that the players were cooperating and simply seeing how far they could go. Nothing changed hands in the last 30 years.

Longest game I have seen is this one:
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=333

Figle was playing in it, and it was a good win for Rait. Never underestimate those who keep on plugging away year after year. Very impressive.
anlari (8640 D)

Yeah, I remember that one.. Fig announced that he had quit the game after we broke the 10-year-long stalemate when he was on vacation.. So I stabbed Rait.. and just I'm marching to victory, he somehow convinces Fig to return to the game, so I protest and give up..
Darwyn (1601 D)

"Possible multi-gamer?"

LOL! I think these accusations have gotten ridiculous lately. That was flimsy.

Anyway, this has been the longest game I've been a part of.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
Look, it is natural for players to log off at the same time if they are exchanging press. You have to have it happening every time they log on for it to be evidence. And Canute and Darwyn are established members.
Chrispminis (916 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
If they were multiaccounters they have such elaborate differences in playing style, prose, and games in which they've participated that it would hardly make a difference as they would have ended up winning far more games on their individual skill than their multiaccount cooperation anyways.

The longest game I've been in only lasted until 1924. The vast majority of my games end between 1908-1912. That longest game of mine is definitely one of my favourites as I had very heated discussion with Noodlebug, there was excellent and consistent diplomacy, and it was perhaps the epitome of play to win style.

It's really too bad that the replays for older games don't work. I'm such an old timer that many of my favourite games are missing.

Canute:

Please do not sully my good name. If you recall, I did just very recently give you a sound beating in the "Rider Pt. 2" game. I'm here merely pointing out that there was a *possibility* that you were a multigamer. But If there is evidence to the contrary, then you have the right to defend the accusation. Frankly I've been in too many games where there was multigaming under the scenes (whether it be the same player or two players who are related)... I believe my paranoia is justifiable.

P.S. If you want to call people names you should probably first lookup what your name means:

Fidobot: I am aware that the name canute was not chosen for the worst possible meaning it has. (For a man with > 130 IQ I'm sure he knows what he is doing.) What I am arguing is that Canute should not attack others based on morphology of the name (as he did with my last name) - when his own name maybe place under similar scrutiny and attack. The typical metaphor is that the man in the glass house should not throw stones. And my version being - a Nazi who sleeps with Hitler shouldn't accuse others of being anti-Semitic. With this last thought... I hope to end yet another discussion thread (thanks to Godwin's law).

Voice to voice game?
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in running a game using a voice chat program, such as ventrilo, to play something akin to face-to-face diplomacy? I don't know if i will be able to devote a large enough chunk of time to playing this quite yet, but i'm just pitching the idea in case anyone else would like to give it a shot.

Kestas, can I bother you?
I am playing in a Global Press only game, and it seems to be a very rich, lively game. However, the Global Press tab gets filled very quickly, and if one person is away for, say, 15 or 20 hours they may miss(and have missed!) dialogue between the other players, often concerning their own country.(Looking at you, Russia, in the current game!)

Anyways, would it be terribly difficult to increase the amount of Press seen by the players in the Global Tab dialogue box? Maybe, and I'm just thinking out loud here, but would it be possible to organize it so that messages are deleted not by how many messages are there, but by how long the message has been there? Like, say, messages posted in the Global tab would only be deleted after a day or two? I have no idea if this is even possible, but I thought I'd ask, cause it does hurt the gameplay of Global Press Only games... Thanks in advance!

How many games is too many?
How many games of Diplomacy do you normally involve yourself in at one time? I've found that four is about enough for me, at least at the moment. One is no press, one is open press, one I joined late, and the last is a normal game. I suspect that four normal games might really start to pile up a bit... :-) What're your opinions?

New Feature = Hours of Phase???
The number of hours allowed for players to discuss and enter orders each phase (between 1 and 72 hours).
Longer phase hours means more time to make careful decisions and negotiations, but makes a game take longer. Shorter phase hours results in a faster game, but requires that players in the game are available to check the game frequently.

No Press Games
I have seen people playing no press games. When played here on phpdiplomacy, there is no way to enforce it, so it is not that common, but for many of the other judges, no press games seem to be a very big part of the games played.
Why are these games so popular? Why do people want to play Diplomacy without diplomacy?
I hope somebody here can explain me the fascination of it.
To me, it still sounds like guessing moves, rather than real Diplomacy.

Tired of 'stone age' players
I don't know if it is just me or if this place is changing, but since I returned from my monthly break, I've been bumping into what I would call 'stone age' players. I don't know if it is possible to describe it, but I'll list a few common characteristics:

1- Almost never talks or replies to messages.
2- When they do it is never longer than once sentence, and often (unintentionally) cryptic.. that is, it doesn't make, often due to bad english - I'll give examples
3- Often behave emotionally - attack you just to get at you or get revenge while letting another player that didn't 'mess with them' win
4- Which often leads to what we call 'kamikaze' situations..
5- Extremely short term thinking - the mentality goes like 'I'll attack you and get a single SC then have a stalemate forever while everyone keeps growing lololol'
6- Bad allies. We agree on moves and they just do whatever they think is better, which leads to doom of both parties of the alliance - I'm not talking about stabs, I'm talking about saying yes yes and doing your own stupid moves instead, then repeating the same.

Examples of messages in point 2:

KILL X KILL X KILL X KILL X
Y will win. we must ally
fleet in Z bad, die
DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
liar!!!
(after asking why he supported X into your territory) "just fixing weak pts"
and of course when I retaliate.. "You make me desperate to destroy you" "Good boys dont move to X"

I am already sick of playing games dominated by this kind of players, that is, 1 or 2 is fine, but when 5 of the 7 players on the board are like that.. Ugh. How can I escape?
