I get the impression from your posts that you are an old hand at this game and are very active on the dip pouch site and diplomacy game world in general.
so i was wondering what you think of this site? how does it compare (the players i mean not graphics or code) with dip pouch and other places?
what variations are popular on dip pouch and other sites? we sometimes play no press/gunboat and team (2 or 3 team) games.

just interested in your thoughts.

oh ...and join a game!

Fast Games
Has anyone tried to get through a game in an afternoon/day online here?

That would be something I'd like to try in the future, if anyone else is interested...
Croaker (370 D)
16 Jul 08 UTC
I'd like that too. It would have to be a private game to avoid claim-jumpers. My time zone is GMT -6.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
16 Jul 08 UTC
Yes, I would be interested, but would have to be during the daytime for me - I am London GMT (though British Summer Time means it's currently GMT+1)

i think its been tried a few times. success or not i dont know. what time frame were you thinking for moves/retreats/build phase?
a major problem is dealing with the time zones and getting all 7 i think

Well I'm GMT +10... but also on uni holidays and recovering from surgery so I am flexible. Even an agreement where you play 1901-1904 in one day, then another few years the next day and so on...
Croaker (370 D)
16 Jul 08 UTC
That would illustrate the problem. With four responses its looks like we have one North American, one South American, one European and one Australian.
I'd do it depending on the time. I'm GMT -4
cteno4 (100 D)
16 Jul 08 UTC
I'd do it, too. I'm GMT -7 (for US Daylight Savings Time) or GMT -8 (US "Standard" Time, which amusingly occupies a much shorter part of the calendar year than Daylight Savings Time does)
azzaron (1765 D)
16 Jul 08 UTC
I'd love to do it - I'm GMT -5.
Croaker (370 D)

How about right now? I'll set up a game called TimeZone, password the same, with a goal of getting through to 1905 by end-of-day July 17th. It'll be a small buy-in, WTA game.

Chrispminis (916 D)

You should try to do it on a lazy weekend sometime. You'll have to give people the chance to make time to play as well. It's tough organizing a fast game, it's been tried several times in the past. Unfortunately, I don't know any that's been particularly successful in the endeavour. =\

I would suggest planning it here, finding seven players within a reasonable time difference and organizing and setting a precise time and date to play. Setting up the game spontaneously and hoping that people will join won't work. Use your emails.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
18 Jul 08 UTC
i'd be interested.... GMT+8.

Major issue is that you only need one out of the seven to step aside for a bit and everyone else has to wait. Then he comes back, but someone else drifts off. Or if someone gets a pasting early on, they can ruin the game by not submitting orders pretty easily.

Going for something a little less ambitious like completing first 3 or 4 years in a day might be easier. but everyone would need to be prepared to play remainder over a long haul... and prepared for dissappointment if it doesn't happen.
fraushai (1781 D)

Strange coincidences in login times
I am not accusing anyone, but the fact that two players in this game (England and Italy) disappeared for 3 days, with exactly the same last login date and time, and then reappearing 3 days later within 3 minutes, makes me think, what strange coincidences there are in life. :-)

Web Site Improvement Suggestion
Under "Games", there are currently 4 tabs:
Your games
Joinable
Active
Finished

Would it be possible to split "Joinable" into something like "New Joinable" and "Existing Joinable"? "New Joinable" would be games which have not yet started, and "Existing Joinable" would be where you take over countries in civil disorder.

I ask for this improvement since I don't like taking over countries in civil disorder. I find the most exciting time of the game is the first year. However, 90% of the Joinable games are always civil disorder joins and I get frustrated having to sift through them to find new games starting up.

Just a suggestion :)

Game 4322 Error
I cannot open this game, Error triggered: A database lock (4322_map) could not be taken.

The database may currently be overloaded, please try again momentarily..

This was probably caused by a software bug. The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer.

Thanks Kestas

How often do you check your games?
I'm pretty much permanently on phpDip. Granted, sometimes I log out, so people are less inclined to "chat" with me about tactics. But sometimes I never leave. How often do you check in?

Unfinalized orders carried out?
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I can't seem to find it. I

n game Move Along Now (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4490) I have for the last two turns observed Austria to have the red X indicating unfinalized orders as the game reported being "Due Now". Furthermore, the game reported that Austria's player was not logged in at that time. And yet Austrian units still acted upon apparently valid orders.

Does the game carry out entered but unfinalized orders, then? I had been under the impression it didn't, but...?

civil disorder
What happens when a country goes into civil disorder? More specifically if nobody takes over the country does the game go on regardless according to the CD rules (all units hold, no builds, dislodged units disband etc) or is the game held up until someone takes over?

Kestas, I think I found a bug.
I got a message from the game mmmmmgggrlll that I earned 12 points, but I did not get the points. I took over a country in CD here, and I'm wondering if the code changes caused this.

Potentially Disasterous Bug
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4458

When I went to check my game, the initial page that loaded displayed the chat between the Russian and Austrian players. I am playing England... Luckily this game is nearly over and I caught just a fleeting glimpse before I realized the problem and switched chats, but in another game this could have been disasterous.

Support Question
The rules on the site state that support can be given to HOLDING units.

However, normally I believe support can be given to any unit that DOESN'T MOVE. (see http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf)

So if I order two units to support each other and one is attacked (and the attack is supported), what will happen? The site rules suggest that the attack will succeed (can't support a unit that wasn't holding), however normally it wouldn't do so.

Please help. (Soon).

Thanks in advance.

Spain Movement Question
In this game: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4222, last night I decided to move my Portugal Fleet to South Coast Spain, while moving the fleet at North Coast Spain to Portugal. At the time, I didn't think of it as a bounce since both fleets were not directly crossing movement, but it was interpreted by the adjudicator as bounces, which makes sense when I woke up this morning. I just want to make sure that it is actually a bounce.
