New player
So, I'm completely new to Diplomacy, and was wondering what the best way to get started. I read the help page, but it seems like it's a little incomplete...

I played the board game A Game of Thrones and was told it was vaguely similar to Diplomacy, and I think I'd like to try it out, but feel like a total n00b to just jump into a game... So... how do I start? Anyone want to help someone new get into the hobby?

Thanks...

A Variant - Kill Hidden Target Country
how about this for an variant idea- all countries have a kill objective country.the game master decides which country has to kill which country, nobody knows the others kill objective country. once you have succeeded (or somebody else succeeded for you by foolishly wiping a non target country) then the game is halted and you win ( suppose technically it will be a draw in phpdip)
game master is needed to be fair about each countries kill objective - for example Austria will win if england is destroyed, england will win if turkey is destroyed etc. however austria and russia would be a bad match - too easy.
could be fun as people will naturally want to grow strong (but also protective of weaker near death countries) but maybe the country that hides their target and then strikes deep to destroy their target, not worrying about her home sc at all might win.

Suggestion: 3 strikes and out...
I must say, I do find these 24hr deadlines a bit of a struggle, particularly considering you need time to analyse the map, suggest plans to allies, wait to hear back, and all while playing with people in different time zones. I realise that the option of longer deadlines is on the cards, but I do think the 'miss the deadline and your units hold' rule is a real problem. Not only does it put the guilty player at a big disadvantage, whose tardiness may well be a rare oversight or due to circumstances beyond their control, but it also puts his/her neighbours at a huge advantage, in that they suddenly have uncontested SCs for the taking, or find their attacks undefended against, which upsets the balance of the game and is unfair on the other players...

So, here's my suggestion. A 'three strikes and out' rule...

1. Miss a deadline and the game system automatically emails you a reminder to the email address you have registered with the phpDip, and then extends the game period by another 24 hours (or whatever).

2. Miss the extended deadline and you're docked a number of points -- exactly what the penalty would be I'm not sure, perhaps the original stake required to join the game? Again the deadline is extended.

3. Miss this third deadline and you're automatically ejected from the game, and again fined points. The turn isn't processed until another player takes over and actually puts in a turn...

I realise this could potentially slow things down, but my feeling is that this would be preferable to an unbalanced game. In any event, I think the game system automatically emailing reminders of deadlines/notices that a turn has been processes is a great idea. Mind you, I have no idea how feasible any of this would actually be to implement.

Discuss...

here's mine. i think it's smarter :-)
1. you're allowed one extension per game.
2. miss the extension, and you're already in CD. the game is paused for another turn, but everybody is free to take over a solid position - or you could still return before that and continue
3. after this, the game continues normally with the player in CD

The result of someone getting 3 strikes would be more 'unfair' as you say because a player will be in CD for the rest of the game (providing that no-one takes it over, which I doubt they would be in a position to do so). As far as balance goes, the units will still occupy the territories and require some forces to pick apart, which would help the non-neighboring players.

I agree with Alamothe's plan. Strongly. I hate missing turns, and its getting worse what with school heating up for me.

Why would the email notification be of any help? If a player is serious about playing in a game, they ought to already be checking the site several times a day in order to conduct the diplomacy that is necessary to the game.

I think a far more elegant solution would be the oft used variant of civil disorder units support holding one another. For example, when a game starts with 6 players, the Italian units currently sit holding each turn. With the variant, Venice and Naples each support Rome (as it is the only other unit within their range). Rome randomly supports either Venice or Naples.

This would cut down on some of the losses players suffer when they accidentally miss a turn. It would also keep games more balanced when a player suddenly disappears. Finally, it wouldn't penalize everyone else in game who takes the time to participate by making them wait.

I think the system's fine as it is. Having said that, dangermouse's idea sounds good.
Emails won't help. Someone who can't get it together to place orders once in 24 hours probably isn't going anywhere near a computer, or just doesn't care.
Docking points won't help. The worst offenders will be newbs. We get our points back when we've spent them all. (Actually, right now, we get bumped back up to 100 points every time a game finishes.)
Extending the game is, I think, unfair on those players who just want to get on with it.
I actually think that 24 hours is a looooong time for a game turn, and that somebody who isn't able to address correspondence and place orders in that time probably shouldn't be playing here. Sorry....

@dangermouse - I think the original rules state specifically that a country that fails to submit orders will automatically lead to a hold only order.

I know it's unfortunate, and occasionally we all miss turns. I would be interested in the automatic extension however. It seems that if you were allowed this once, and once only per game, then it wouldn't hold up play too much, and would allow you that extra time to find a PC.

Figle/Kestas et al - would this be difficult to code? I know we are relying incredibly on a few stalwart coders for this site, for which we should be incredibly grateful. Their time is short, and the fact that the site has so few bugs, and runs so well, is a tribute to the time and effort that they put in. *round of applause* Yes it's overdoing the praise somewhat, but what the hell - they deserve it!

I know it's officially against the rules. I would prefer to remain the way we are and penalize tardy players for missing turns, but as a compromise I would prefer my suggestion to excessively delaying games.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

i think it's bad too, definitely against the rules :-)

i vote for delaying games a little if that could significantly improve the quality of them

I vote for current system, with an added variable phase length option in game creation.
Tman401 (126 D)

i think that the current system works well. Like many people suggest just make the game length adjustable for the game maker. Have three settings, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, and 32 hrs.

Suggestion: Please, let everyone create WTA games!
As a player new to phpdiplomacy, I instinctively tried to avoid points-per-supply-center games, due to their dissimilarity to the goals of the FtF games I had played before. But, to my shock and horror, I found that there usually isn't a winner-take-all game open - though when there is, it tends to fill up quickly. As such, I cannot play in very many games, as the only games I am willing to play in are WTA games and I can't join them (because I don't see them often) or create them (because I have fewer than 101 points). As such, I beseech ye: please, let me create WTA games!

A Variant - How Fast Can Medi Win?
Basically, seven players join up, and we try to see how quickly I can win, given the random country I receive. It could lead to interesting tactical discussions, and use of the Global tab which is usually ignored.

I'll start a 50-point private game if anyone's interested. Who wants some?

Different time limits?
Would there be interest in different time limits for submitting moves? In every game I've started, I've ended up being away from the internet for a weekend, and lost my entire position (sometimes even gone into CD). I'd like to play, but it is not feasible at the moment.

Here's my proposal:

Let the player creating each game choose a number of hours, which will be the time limit for each move submission in that game.

This will not impede anyone who enjoys 24-hour time limits, but will allow others to enjoy faster or slower games.

If this is too difficult to program (I don't see why it would be, but I haven't seen the code), an alternate suggestion would be to just create a few time limit options: perhaps 12 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours.

Tell me what you think:

P.S. How do you create a WTA game? I don't see an option in the create game screen. Maybe I'm just blind.

We are currently missing a player from our Intensive Press game called Reuters (unfortunate circumstances robbed us of Braveheart). If you would like to play, please send me an e-mail and/or indicate in here.

It is a PPSC game for 47 points each.

See the thread: Reuters - Intensive Press Game for the names of the other players.

Playing with friends.
Why do children see the need to play together, in order to ensure a pt share? My little pony, is one game where England, Germany and Russia played as one nation, pretty much. Not the same player, yet allied. Which was, admittedly, cheating. Now, as Turkey, in 1911, i finally die. germany and England worked too closely together, just checked the map history, and Germany put up little fight to England over running them. Check it out. Link in my profile... Hmmm. Point is... Is it ok to play with groups of friends without warning others? Ps check out E, G, and Russias profiles to see how OFTEN they play together
