New Turn Length
Are the 48-hour turn lengths intentional? I can get used to it I'm just wondering.

In my games everything is running smoothly and I am very appreciative of supporting convoys and no self-displacement. However I am curious as to how the map will replace Game Master tab. Anyway I'm sure that will resolve itself, my main question is about the new turn lengths. I hadn't heard Kestas mention that so I'm curious.

Why "End of phase" delay got so long ?

Autumn 1904, Unit-placing
By my count I should be placing two units, but "The game" is informing me that I have nothing to do this round. We are also in a 40 hour turn, which seems a bit long to me.

Bug report
In the game go Chargers (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2973) Germany has 14 supply centers, and 13 units, but during unit placing it says "You have no orders to enter this turn".... Also, it shows 34 hours left for this phase... anyone know why this might be?

Suggestion to Help
hello,
1st time phpDiplomacy player, taking advantage of the great service, provided, thanks.
I am sure things will become clear once we begin, but at the moment I am curious about the time length of the Periods and cannot find that info in the Rules area. May I suggest that it be added?

Sincerely,

Public Apology to all players affected by my meta gaming before.
Dear Kestas and all phpDiplomacy players,

I am here to apologise and say sorry to all players affected by my meta gamings before. Sorry for all inconveniences and unpleasure caused.

In order to show my sincere repentance, I will stop playing all the acounts.

I will start a new account, try to avoid playing with my classmates, or play with them in password games,
to enjoy the pleasure brought by this wonderful game with all phpDiplomacy players.

I hope that everyone will forgive me and let me repent, change and start over in this game again.

Hope that you will accept my public apology.

Thank you for all your attentions.

(Forgive me that my English sucks too:))

white russia and the map
im sure this has been asked bef0re but why isnt russia white? isnt it white in the board game? it didnt look good? how about a cream/beige?
ive always thought the phpdip board a little too dark. some ligher colours might make it look nicer. and if it was lighter that would allow germany to be black...a much cooler looking colour than brown.

Suggestions for Kestas
Countries in CD should defend themselves. Units that can should hold support each other.

In the fall, countries without SCs, that cannot retreat into an open SC, should not be asked to retreat and disband. Too many players don't finalize those steps. The remaining players get to wait 48 hours.

Replying to people who always accuse, me, timchau, happyklim or other players in my class.
Let me explain to you guys about me and the players in my class first:

I am from Hong Kong, China.

I am in F.3, i.e. grade 9

My classmates playing phpDiplomacy include:

1. myself

2. saradomian

3. Gobbledydook

4. Chairman Mao

5. kn2005

6. timchau

7. happyklim

8. jasperleeabc

9.galaxypheonix

We are in the same class, and gobbledydook introduces this game to me. Soon, many of my classmates join, and we also like playing together. Playing in the the same game is not forbidden.

So I sincerely hope that you guys will stop making up things like we all are meta gaming.

Replying to sean:

Sometimes our classmate dosen't have enough points or don't want to play such low pot games. Also, some of us don't have too much time to play so many games. So, if we want to play private games, we would rather play the game on paper during the lesson... or free time :D

I hope this will answer all the questions to all of us.

Babysitter Wanted!
So, I'm going away for five days to Montreal during March break, and I'm looking for someone to take care of my account during the period. I'm only in one game, and it's basically a guaranteed win, so it's very low maintenance.

I'll be gone from March 7th to March 12th. E-mail me at [email protected] if you think you can take this job. Only two requirements, that you be relatively known and trustworthy, and obviously you aren't participating in my one game...

Thanks in advance!

Was wondering about the people who play on this site, their politcal leanings. im a good ol` Anarcho-Syndicalist myself.
but from a few mumbles and other hints im guess there is a quite widespread community of right wing nut jobs on this site too;)

I do not view society in purely materialistic terms: see my post in the religion thread. Neither does Thucydides. Please remember that a good deal of what I argue for does not reflect my convictions. My political views are virtually identical to those of Thucydides. I also freely admit that I used a very inappropriate term above when I said "unable to think". What I was advocating above was what Chrispminis believed me to be advocating.

Having skipped to the very end to chip in without reading (sorry): I think "microdemocracy" (fancy speak for internet voting on many smaller policies/issues) is potentially interesting, and on the other end of the spectrum I also think a meritocracy (fancy speak for: give the political jobs to the smartest) could also work well.

Then again it is working very nicely the way it is at the moment, at least here in Australia (I hate Rudd and don't like a single one of his policies, and he has quite possibly ruined my career plan, but I can't really complain that the political system here is bad)

I just flicked back through some of the discussion. It's great to see we have many smart cookies here, very nice to see people who aren't going over the top with extreme ideas or visions of a utopia. :-)
Sicarius (673 D)

Not over the top? there s a guy on here who wants to turn people into gears of a machine. not individuals, not something in itself, but merley parts of a whole, in which none have free thoughts or independence. thats not over the top?

Well I'm not going to get dragged into this, but good luck with your revolution sir. :| You'd find it pretty hard to incite anyone to revolt around here. With enough banners and posters you might incite them to a BBQ though

As to the materialist accusation against me, and yes I say accusation, let me just say: What you see is most definitely NOT what you get. There is so much more to things than the observable, and I stand by that.
Pandora (100 D)

Inciting rebellion is hard work, but we do "incite" them to bbq's. we make food outside our building all the time and give it away. I actually just got done making jambalya, and inviteda homeless person up to eat with us. (now when I say homeless, I 'm using the negative connotation, as in like bum. think old nasty man, or baglady. because technically I am homeless)

What economic structures are best, for all you who would have one?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
06 Mar 08 UTC
I'm actually sort of ambiguous here. I'm all for capitalism, but nothing like laissez-faire. Somewhere in the middle. A little more regulation than what we have in America, that's about it. I'm pretty dull on economics lol.
Pandora (100 D)
06 Mar 08 UTC
well we could just have everyone become a gear, and everyones money would be everyones money, and the country would spend money like one person, since ordianry citizens would have no power, only the leader. doesnt that sound better thucy?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
06 Mar 08 UTC
Hahaha. Refer to above post about "ideal" and "pratical" situations. That would never happen so I don't even get into the economics of such a scenario, because honestly, I don't care much for economics one way or another. I spend money and shamelessly support corporations I guess you would say. By that I mean, I buy from them. So, while I am in the system, I don't pay a heck of a lot of attention to it, at least I don't yet, maybe once I pay taxes I will.
Sicarius (673 D)
06 Mar 08 UTC
why pay taxes at all?

why not just paint/travel/sing/eat/talk/swim/cook/run/write/draw/do whatever you want. live life to the fullest man.

How far back can we go? If you want in the last century, I'm hard-pressed to give you anyone. If you give me two centuries, I'd go with Napoleon, and if you give me the span of history I'd go with Justinian.

Justinian the Byzantine? hmmm, interesting. him and Napoleon were both conquerers, is that what you were getting at?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
07 Mar 08 UTC
I'm getting at consolidation. Hence my statist position. Lol. But no I don't only admire them for their conquests. I admire them for giving dying states a moment of glory. Justinian briefly combatted the long decline of the Roman State, and Napoleon took France out of their revolution and made the world respect them again.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
07 Mar 08 UTC
But yes I also admire their military beastliness.
Brutorix (100 D)
07 Mar 08 UTC
I have quite a few and most not military based but the only one who comes to mind right now is Julius Caeser. When you look at some of the things he's done its just incredible. Its funny how Suetonius recorded that he looked at a statue of Alexander the Great when he was 30 and sighed at the comparison - Within another 30 years though he saw Rome's corner's expand all the way to England and the Nile.

Some of the lesser known events in his life are also quite interesting. For example, when he was on his way to Rhodes to study he was kidnapped by pirates, after his family paid the ransom for his release he - without any real military experience - raised a small force out of the villages in north Africa and chased down the pirates, captured and executed them, took their boat, and then went to Greece to help with a campaign there and put himself in the senate's spotlight.
Sicarius (673 D)
07 Mar 08 UTC
I think the story goes that he looked upon a bust of alexander the great and cried, because he felt he was letting his life slip away without any real acheivements. at least thats how I've heard it
Brutorix (100 D)
07 Mar 08 UTC
Suetonius in his biography of the twelve caesers said it was a statue in Spain if I'm not mistaken.

I think thats the most reliable source but I'm not willing to go pick up my translation to verify my claim. Then again, I think that the chance that we're talking about different translations or even translations of translations is quite likely as well. The Twelve Caesers was though written after or during the reign of Emperor Hadrian which was 2 or 300 years after the death of Julius Caeser and included a lot of rumours and hearsay. So its validity on something as insignificant as that is definitely questionable.

Even then though, he had already gotten his 'triumph' for his works in Greece with his make-shift army. And taken multiple political positions in Spain.

Its very interesting when you look at who chose to hang aroud him though as well as what people said. The dictator Cornelius Sulla wanted him executed after he took control of Rome claiming there were many of Marius' in Julius Caeser. When you look at the achievements of Marius (Reforming the Roman army into Legionairies being the most notable, he was also the Caeser's uncle and incredibly popular among the people) this was an incredible compliment. He was convinced by those around him not to execute the 19 year old boy who obviously wouldn't amount to anything.

I saw this on todays Quotes of the Day, and it set me thinking, what are the most relavent quotes for a diplomacy player? I don't mean necessarily political or tactical (they might be), but related to the backstabbing world of diplomacy. To get started:
