Of Warp Factors and Wookies.........
OK, for some reason, the Holiday Season puts me in a Sci-Fi mood. Since we've done the whole "Greatest Diplomacy player" thing, and basically drew between Bismark, Alexander, and Ghengis Khah (still think Alexander should have won), let's do Sci-Fi: if you want, of course.

There will be three heats- a Trek Heat, a Wars heat, and then, the winners of each heat will move on, and then we'll combine the two lists, figure out who got the 3rd most votes, then 4th, etc, until we have 7 players for the final.

So, in the Trek heat we have:

Kirk
Spock
Picard
Data
Sisko
Worf
Janeway
Khan (Gotta do it: KKKKKHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!)

In the Wars heat:

Anakin/Vader
Luke
Padme
Leia
Yoda
Palpatine
Obi-Wan

Sorry if your favorite didn't make the list................

Shalom, Live long and prosper, and May the Force be with you!

(Wow- I AM a huge nerd- ah well.)

Beware these Players (One Player?)
The players are Putin, Tsar, Comrade and Spetznatz. I am currently playing in Fast Players in which I was informed by these players that they are allied because they all know each other in "real life", go to the same high school and participate in a model UN together. Pre game alliances make for boring and predictable games. Fcuk that shit. As I mulled over whether to abandon the game on principle I began to suspect these players were the same person. A scan of their games shows a pattern of playing together. They mysteriously log on within minutes of each other in quick succesion year after year. When I gave these players a heads up of an outing on the forum, they all responded with 1 minute. If not the same player, their level of collusion is troubling. It brings no fun to the game played this way. Kestas, I am asking if you could please investigate and shut down this game.

Acused of metagame (diegohb & ssabia)
On the game "Isaac newton" Anlari is acusing me (and Ssabia). He is suspicious because Russia (Ssabia) is attacking Germany (Anlari) after Germany was keeping Russia out of sweden from the beggining.
In the first game I won, Ssabia finished 2nd. Despite the fact that ssabia and I had won games on our own, when we play a game together there is always a smart ass acusing us of metagame (and some other stupid who believe this) . And that leave us with no choice of allies, and therefore, we must work together.
Please, analize the case end post your opinion. If enough people think I am guilty of metagame, I will quit this game.

Anti-Anlari crusade (vote here)
Please vote here YES or NO if you agree with this suggested changes:

1) Implementation of some sort of ip-verification-system (to stop multiaccounters)
2) Anonymous games. (to stop the false acussations)
3) Winner takes all points (no points for 2nd place) and in case of draw the points are divided equally between the drawers.

Please, do not discuss here (use the other post).

1 has already been discussed extensively. IP verification will not be implemented on this site. Players who log in from multiple locations would no longer be able to do so. More importantly, players who participate from a group location (a university for example) would all be tagged as multi-accounters.
2) Meh.
3) Yes. It will be implemented. Game creators will be able to specify winner-take-all or use the current algorithm.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

1. i have proposed earlier one year ban for multiaccounters. i think it's easy to implement and enforce (not just based on ip address)
2. should be an option for game creator
3. same as 2
anlari (8640 D)

2 might not be so bad if it is made optional (I really should not even reply considering the name of the thread)
amathur2k (100 D)
27 Dec 07 UTC
1) Yes, with the the caveat that same ip's not entering the same game may be overlooked. Players from a common group location may be allowed to form a game of their own.
2) No, this will make it easier for multi accounters
3) No Opinion
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
27 Dec 07 UTC
1) No - I log in from several different places - would label me as multi-accounter.
2) Yes - currently have a player who joined a game halfway thru *solely* so he could attack me because I had stabbed him in a previous game
3) Should be an option for game creator
fwancophile (164 D)
27 Dec 07 UTC
1 - yes - uh, logging in from several different places doesn't have anything to do with multiaccounting - i have long participated on forum based games which ban multiaccounters (clones, in that particular parlance) and have always been able to log in from wherever
2 - yes, that would be so sweet
3 - yes

yes, yes and yes. for good measure, yes!

Comments: I've been accused of metagaming (in a game and not in the forum). On this site, players may develope reputations (good or bad) and it is probably a warning sign if you become worried about it.

Anonymous games and named-player games:

A: If both are allowed, what is to stop people revealing their names or impersonating public names in anonymous games? This might cause confusion rather than a fall in false accusations.

B: If all games are anonymous, this undermines the sense of community that makes this site an attractive place to play Diplomacy. It also prevents the dreaded multi-accounter from being noticed by players.

Winner takes all:

As discussed in another thread, this is on the list of improvements for this site.

Vote:

1: No comment.
2: It seems best to keep players of games publicly known.
3: No comment.

1) No. I am against multi-accounters, but I don't think your suggestion catches those kind of users (since someone could log in to separate computers at the same time) and could potentially hurt users who log in from the same school, company, or organization.
2) No. It might be an interesting option, but is beyond the rules of the orginal game.
3) I personally would like to see the point system abolished and replaced with a ranking system that more accurately measures the skill of each player. My ideal ranking system would have all new players start at the same rank, and rank would increase based on how you place in game and the rank of the other players you have beat in a game. When setting up a game, the range of ranks that join the game could be a settable option.

Anti-Anlari crusade (discuss here)
Hello. I saw enough games ruined by characters like Anlari. To stop this desease, I suggest 3 changes to this website:

1) The hardest to accomplish. We need some sort of ip-verication-system to stop the multi-accounters (or to make the job hardest for them)

2) This is very simple. The games should be ANONYMOUS. That means, none knows the identity of the other players until the game is finished. That way you stop the "Anlari" behaivior ("XXX is metagaming!!! look at game YYY!!! Do not ally with him!!! etc etc)

3) This one is simple too. Lets bring back to life the true spirit of the game. On the Diplomacy Rulebook (4th Edition (C) 2000 Hasbro) is writted: "As soon as one Great Power controls 18 supply centers, it is considered to have gained control of Europe. The player representing that Great Power is the winner. However, players can end the game by agreement before a winner is determined. In that case, all players who still have pieces on the board share equally in a draw". If we apply this to the point sistem: a) the rulebook says there is only 1 winner, so the winner takes all the points (no points for 2nd place). b) if a draw is declared, the poins are divided equally between the players who survived (no matter how many units).

Please, discuss here and please vote YES or NO (to the suggested changes) in the other post.

A problem here
Game affected: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2463

Hi,
I am Turkey in this game. One thing I do not understand, why can Russia take my Greece in just 1 turn? Shouldn't Russia get it after the second Diplomacy turn, instead of immediately after attacking? Is that a known bug or am I wrong about the rules?
