Western Meddling in Iranian Protests
So this is great and all. Encouraging protests and stuff. Um didnt this happen in Iran in Arab Spring too? When people start dying were gonna look pretty bad again. Like we encouraged a coup but didnt actually care about the consequences.

Fewer live classic games these days?
Looking back through the last couple months' completed games, it feels like there are far fewer Classic live games than there were a few years ago. Do other people have the same feeling?

Best Picture
What movies have you seen this year, and which one do you think should win the best picture Oscar?

Last Snowfl- I mean, Last Jedi. ;)

I haven’t watched as many as I should, but I’d probably say Dunkirk was my favorite.
Octavious (2802 D)

Dunkirk was pretty awesome, in the true sense of the word. My favourite film of the year, however, is probably Baby Driver.

Dunkirk.

Fifty Shades Darker, easy.

Hilariously enough, I think that *will* win an Oscar. Just not Best Picture.

The best movie I saw this year was definitely Get Out

TrPrado (461 D)

(Fifty Shades Darker that is.)

Get Out and Baby Driver were films I had hoped to see but never had the opportunity.
The following are the notable movies released in 2017 I've seen :
Dunkirk
Get Out
Wonder Woman
Disaster Artist
Logan
Last Jedi
Baby Driver
Spider Man: Homecoming
Guardians Vol. 2
John Wick Chapter 2
Death Note

So not too long a list to pick from, but for best picture, I'd definitely go with Get Out. Surprising to pick a horror flick as best picture, but it's genre changing, has great performances and has a nice tight plot. All of the films listed(save for death note) were good though.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

Baby Driver giving Best Male Supporting Actor to Kevin Spacey would be Hollywood at its most peak.

Downsizing or Dunkirk will probably win, unless Molly's Game lives up to its hype. Get Out won't win because the Oscars don't give shit to Horror Movies. Or superhero movies.
TrPrado (461 D)
29 Dec 17 UTC
“Or superhero movies.”

Are you forgetting the Academy Award winning Suicide Squad?
From what I've heard Downsizing won't be anywhere near Best Picture.

The academy awards are a sham and a scam. Harvey Weinstein rigged several. Still if you want to pick a good one choose "three billboards".
Foxcastle (100 D)

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was dark and hilarious. Frances McDormand deserves an award.

I, Tonya was great, and is now the definitive historical record, as far as I'm concerned. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney in particular.

The Darkest Hour was fine overall, but Gary Oldman probably needs an award for playing Churchill.

Dunkirk was both epic and intimate, a fine choice for best picture.

Blade Runner 2049 could get best director, maybe.

I need to see Ladybird, the Shape of Water, and the Post to round out the contenders. I've heard they're all great.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

I usually like films like Dunkirk but it thoroughly disappointed me.
brainbomb (295 D)
29 Dec 17 UTC
Dunkirk wont win. My money is on ladybird winning it. The reason dunkirk wont win is that theres just not enough of a translatable message from it that transcends our society. I havent seen ladybird but from what ive read it seems like the favorite.
My guess for what will clean up at awards time is The Post (it has Meryl Streep in it!)
Except it seems so cynically oscar bait-y it's almost too obvious.

If you're looking for something fun, that you might have missed, check out Baby Driver. It was something else.

I'm still to see "The Darkest Hour".. I've seen Dunkirk & recently Tom Cruise in "American Made"... where do these filmmakers get such plot ideas from ? Like the CIA would get involved in drug smuggling and other criminal acts ?

Y’all are forgetting Disaster Artist (best actor)

Sing for best soundtrack. (Baby driver close 2nd)

Dunkirk was good, but I’m hoping to see three billboards, and shape of water which are supposed to be fantastic.

Just got out of the showman - awful
Blade runner - ridiculously boring
Jumanji was fun but not an Oscar.
Octavious (2802 D)

Out of curiosity, why did people like Wonder Woman? It was truly awful! The inevitable loud smashy final act was even sillier than your usual comic book film, Wonder Woman kept doing stupid things like leading a charge against a heavily defended enemy position the day before the war was meant to finish, and for some bizarre reason the Village People were walking back and forth between the trenches. What the hell?!?

Also. The best movie I've SEEN this year was "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"
It got awful reviews, and maybe I just like it because the kid in the movie is everything I ever wanted to be when I was younger, but nonetheless I absolutely loved it. It came out 6 years ago though

The Room is a brilliant movie, and well explained by the disaster artist. Tommy Wiseau (the director) payed for it to be kept in cinemas for 2 weeks to qualify for the academy awards) I think given Tommy's brilliant commitment, film-making skills and acting he should be recognised for an Oscar 14 years later alongside the disaster artist

Get Out
Three Billboards
Logan
Baby Driver

All great flicks with rewatchability.

And go watch Bright. 4.5/5
