I see it Christmas Day. I’ve heard EXTREMELY mixed responses, from awful to best Star Wars film that’s been made (the latter coming from people I trust in terms of film critique, even).

(Though it may be important to point out the person who told me it was awful also thinks Revenve of the Sith is the best Star Wars movie.)

It sounds like its trying to be Art instead of Star Wars. Its a big character story - so much so the rebellion and the plot are not even relevant. Im fine with that. Ill go see it after work tonight. Further opinion without spoilers too.

The Charlie Sheen cameo was weird and Jar Jar being a Sith lord was pure fanservice, but other than that it's a solid continuation of the franchise.

Any Star Wars fan would be more then satisfied with this movie. Like the first one in this trilogy there’s going to be some room for minor criticism but enough good stuff in this to enjoy.

Hour one: okay some bad artistic liberties on the vaccuum of space and how powerful were apparently making leia for no reason but ok... i guess. Also why exactly is the rebellion so stupid?

Hour two: luke doing cool stuff
Good dialogue. Maybe I like this movie. Yea

Also, the ending with the kid with the broom is a teaser for a spinoff trilogy. Kinda unimpressed.

Some solid moments tho. Wouldve liked to have seen luke try to force rey to lift a xwing with her mind. Or perhaps she actually learms something relevant about amything.

Theres no main character. That kinda confuses me. Poe just seems idiotic. Finn is bizarre. The new girl ppl are obsessing about seemed kinda bad at acting tbh.

But Rey was great

Thats the best I can do at avoiding spoilers while also talking about it. Do go see it. Its far better than the previous attempt by jj-reboot-abrams. Yea lets be sure to make another death star

there's nothing I can say without spoilers, that has any meaning or impact.

overall it's a film worth watching. there are fair criticisms, but there are spectacular movements. It is better than 7, and it leaves plenty of open room for 9. as someone who usually is very bitter with movie series that get drawn out over time, I'm very happy as of right now. there are many things I outright disagree with, and many things I would have done differently... but a must-see film nonetheless.

It wouldve been better to have written the rebel alliance as in power but struggling to fight an insurgent first order rebellion. One waging proxy wars in a number of theatres in the galaxy.

I loved that guys comment about the arms race and how whoevers ship theyd stolen was selling weapons to both sides. Would be neat to have explored that more.

The Rebels at least tried combined arms, but failed miserably.

I think this was a great story. Luke was always my favorite. He was so great. I think he definetely stole this story.

I didnt know if rey or ren or finn were the main character.

I think its luke in many ways. He has the story of how he basically created his own nightmare.

I dunno if there could be a better way to make rey the answer.

And really the moment with her-snoke-ren is probably not better than how vader/luke tag the emperor but it definetely felt rewarding.

Sometimes I wonder if I saw a different film than everyone else. This was not Star Wars, to me. This movie barely even had a plot, let alone the substance and strands to string the different plot points together. The tone was off in multiple places. Some characters could've been completely written out and the story would've been no different.

And most egregiously, it was an utter disservice to the original trilogy. I don't know what bothers me more, how much VII copied it or VIII shat on it. Frankly, I don't really want to see IX. I have no idea what it will even be about. Everything had wrapped up by the end of this movie. The middle movies of trilogies should very clearly point to what's going to happen in the last one: Smaug is going to burn down Laketown, The Clone Wars have begun, Frodo is going to destroy the Ring, Luke is going to rescue Han and confront his father, etc. This movie? Idk what's going to happen.
