I'm an old player who barely plays anymore and I'm still third.
Hellenic Riot (1528 D Mod (G))

Hardly just me that needs to do that, only 14 of the top 40 joined before 2013 :p

Also the guy in 7th has literally played 6 games...

That one gets even better when you actually look at those six games.

But then like, if you use the actual GR you get all these gunboaters who can't really play fp really well on top anyway so it isn't accurate either
Hellenic Riot (1528 D Mod (G))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
If by "all these" you mean 3 people in the top 40, none of whom are likely to sign up... Sure. You have to be truly exceptionally good at gunboats to actually climb up GR on the back of them.
Hellenic Riot (1528 D Mod (G))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
Whoops, 4 people.
ghug (4232 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
I mentioned earlier that I think regular GR is a better predictor of FP results than FP GR. ATC may have actually run the numbers on this at some point.
ghug (4232 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
How are you counting four? I see Nikola, Split, seth, CS, El_maestro, genghiz, josemurc, swordsman at least, and xorxes is good at FP, but it's definitely not how he got up there.
Hellenic Riot (1528 D Mod (G))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
Aye, sample size matters. Excluding the PPSC games means your sample size for old members is far smaller than it really should be. Sure, there's a few exceptions who either always played DSS or have just played a hell of a lot of games in total, but in general the sample size is way poorer for FP GR, and as a result, the predictions are worse.
Hellenic Riot (1528 D Mod (G))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
Nikola, Split, El_Maestro and josemurc were the four I was counting as being GB-only players, though I missed seth there. Wasn't aware swordsman only plays GB. CS might not play a lot of press, but he proved he was a rather good player on it when he did. Similar to xorxes.
ghug (4232 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
The CS/xorxes case study is another reason regular GR is better. Most of those top gunboaters would probably make good press players, at least if press were conducted in their native languages (xorx's native language is Lojban, if anyone was wondering).

That broke the translator I found on the internet.
Zybodia (355 D)
Thu 07 Dec UTC
I don't play enough games (or well enough) to be at the top of any table, but the fact I have two games that count for FP GR in nearly eight years seems somewhat nonrepresentative of my total body of work. That said, I guess there's not too much disadvantage from starting in a lower group.
"Yes, my first toy in the in place is language from Lojban."-Xorxes

How accurate of a translation is that?
ghug (4232 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
That's what I found too. I'm guessing it's "Yes, my first game on this site was spoken in Lojban." or something roughly along those lines.
Nephilium (217 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
If there's still openings, I'll throw my (probably soon to get demoted) hat into the ring:

Nephilium - 113.6 (as of October)
Zybodia (355 D)

Well, that's certainly a true statement.
Ogion (4977 D)

Isn't the point behind lobjan that it is logically impossible to be ambiguous? A bit of an irony there
ghug (4232 D (B))
Thu 07 Dec UTC
I think the fact that there are only about 200 speakers means that the flaw lies in the lack of competent programmers.
damian (395 D)
Thu 07 Dec UTC
I'm willing to make the switch to Normal GR if that is the methodology preferred by the majority of the players. As I've said there are trade offs to both methods and I'm not married to the choice I made.

damian (395 D)

I'll take a look at bumping it back if it's a common problem. I don't know why y'all can't go on vacations in the summer like normal people. Since I blocked out the schedule purposely to avoid those kind of problems.

Resulting Fallacy
This article is about decision making in poker, but I think it equally applies to Diplomacy and well lots of other things too. I think a lot of players, including myself, fall into this trap of believing everything that works was a good decision and everything that doesn't was a bad one.

Brainstorming on getting more no-press live classic games
Arg! We had 6 for a no-press (i.e. no-chat) live game tonight, no cigar. And there haven't been a lot of no-press Many years ago, my FTF Dip crew had a similar problem ... some wanted and had time for no-press, others didn't, so we couldn't get 7 ... and we came up with a neat solution, which I'll share in a minute. But first ... anyone have advice on how we drum up support for a live no-press game?
