dislodging a convoy
I've asked this before, and I know I should know, but: what does it take to dislodge a convoy? if one unit attacks a convoying unit does the convoyed unit arrive at its destination, or stay where it started? Does it take two units, a move and a support, which would give the area to the dislodging units? Please explain.

Is the premise "all men are created equal" necessary for a Western republic?
See above. I have thoughts on this but will save them for a little while later.

Please be mindful of the additional etiquette requests I am making in the next post.

ATTENTION: Do not be intimidated, this program is for all. So please if you are on the sidelines watching and are interested fill out the apprenticeship application. This program is willing to accept any member of the community with a genuine interest in learning diplomacy and bettering their play.

Many thanks CommanderByron for setting this up, and the mod and admin team for their support! Also huge thanks to all the people, like Ezio and AttiWoolf who have helped move things along by already showing an interest in mentoring and being mentored.

I think that's everyone....

Nah, silly of me. A big shout out to all the chaps of the membership without whom this site wouldn't exist.

As a member of the School Of War, I can definitely say that a mentor can help you see things from aspects you wouldn't otherwise consider and help enhance your overall play. It is a great idea and a very generous thing to do for this community.
damo666 (60 D)

You may want to consider a maximum GR for apprenticeship. If 200+ qualifies for mentorship then perhaps this should disqualify for apprenticeship? Just a thought. Thanks and have signed up as in dire need of improvement.

No damo, some people over 200 really need the help. Plus I think we've got a lot of top players very willing to help semi-experienced ones.

“some people over 200 really need the help”

That’s what grandchildren are for.
Tom Bombadil (2708 D (G))
14 Nov 17 UTC
Agreed. Especially since many top GR players might be great at gunboat but need help in full press, or vice versa.
Djantani (433 D)

Is there a possibility to do it the other way round? I.e., the experienced player plays an FP game and the apprentice can see everything, including the press for that player . I'd call it 'sitting on the lap' mentoring. I did it once and the chap really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.

Obviously you need to be willing to open up to someone else and there probably are some logistical issues to overcome but I thought I'd just throw it in.

I find the SOW is a 'sitting on the fence' mentoring and people can quite rightly say - show me how really good you are at making it happen instead of just talking...
Tom Bombadil (2708 D (G))
14 Nov 17 UTC
I like that idea a lot - I think it would be useful for players to be able to observe a high level game from the inside rather than just spectating - which doesn't really teach you much.

I'd like ghug to be my mentee. I've always dreamed about him sitting in my lap.
ghug (4202 D (B))
14 Nov 17 UTC
Yes please.
Claesar (100 D Mod)

@Djantani: You are free to share press in a FP game with anyone. Including other players in that game, and people who are not. You can post it all on social media, if you want.
CommanderByron (649 D (S))

@all- one of the beauties of this program is the freedom mentors will have in working with students once we get apprentices assigned mentors can feel free to work together by organizing games between students SOW style, or by playing games against each other that their students are spectating. But mentors also have the freedom to act more as a overseer and elder, answering questions and giving advice. There is no pressure to do anything more than being a lifeline for your apprentice. Please feel free to voice ideas, this program will be what we put into it and DO and I are very excited to help any of your ideas if they will better the program and improve the quality of the mentorships.

If we sent in an "application" to be a mentor or apprentice, will we be contacted on the status of our application?

This is a really awesome idea, thanks for putting this together! I love to try and pick the brains of anyone playing, so having an organized system to allow that is even better :)

Anyone available to cancel a game?
I don't know the protocol or how often this happens, but the site crashed, and now Silent Partners-3 is back up, some countries' moves processed and others didn't. I watch all the games in this series (I have set up the games). I hope we're not expected to continue under conditions like these, but i'm open to however people usually handle this.

Resulting Fallacy
This article is about decision making in poker, but I think it equally applies to Diplomacy and well lots of other things too. I think a lot of players, including myself, fall into this trap of believing everything that works was a good decision and everything that doesn't was a bad one.
