California Wildfires
Applying the same logic a couple people used during the hurricanes, we shouldn't feel sorry for those impacted by the wildfires because they are rich and are stupid for choosing to live in areas at great risk for wildfires.

Questionable behaviour in gunboat?
Hi,
I'm wondering what constitutes reasonable grounds for suspected cheating/multi. I'm in a gunboat game where nothing seems to be proceeding logically, but one player in particular seems to have thrown all reason to the wind, apparently with the express intent of screwing me over. At what point does suspicion of cheating become reasonable? What happens if those suspicions are confirmed after the game ends?

A question on WebDip map variants
Hi. A while back, I happened to spectate a game with a map variant I hadn't seen before. It was, if I recall correctly, a map of the world in 1066... or 841. One or the other. So, my question is, how can I start a game with one of these variants, as the one I saw wasn't on the list of different playable maps.

Why are bleeding heart liberals struggling at diplomacy?
My ghost rating is around 800. I am going to mass apply anecdotally that all liberals are therefore as abysmal as me at this game.

Rules query from a new player.
Is Out of Game communication okay in normal diplomacy? If not, what if all members agree that Out of Game communication is okay because the whole group knows each other in real life?

What other online turn based games might I enjoy...
....based on my liking for Diplomacy. Iam looking to expand my range. Nothing massively complex, "live" or requiring Gauntlets of Dexterity, just interesting, challenging turn based games which may run over an extended period. Any suggestions? Cheers all Verming

I like the Game of Thrones boardgame if you can't find that 7th player for Diplomacy. It's not as good and has more rules you need to wrap your head around, but it's still a fun game.
I'm not sure if there's a way to play Scythe online.
Axis&Allies is an interesting game of conquest as well.

The problem with things like the GoT boardgame is that they aren't really games you can play over an extended period. The amount of actions you need to do in a turn means that it needs to be played live, or one in-game turn can last weeks.

Diplomacy is great for online play because it's a simultaneous turn game. People use that word to describe things like GoT, but GoT is half and half - the deployment and reveal phases are simultaneous, but the action phase is very much sequential.

There actually aren't all that many simultaneous turn games out there that I know of - one that might be worth taking a look at is Frozen Synapse; it's not free but it's incredibly well designed and works in the same way as Dip (you only need to put in orders once every day or two days or whatever you choose).

Of course, there's always Diplomacy variants :D If you get bored of the few they have here, there are an absolute ton of them over on vDiplomacy.
Claesar (4665 D)

That is definitely a downside of GoT. Bidding on the influence tracks easily takes more than a week..

I used to play a game online called Medieval Diplomacy. Not sure if that still exists, but it was essentially a mix between (Medieval) Risk and Diplomacy.

There's always Risk, if you want a dumbed down version of Diplomacy.

I think alot of turn based games struggle online because they lose flow and you forget what each player is angling in terms of strategy. Games like 7 Wonders, and Puerto Rico I find really difficult to play in non "live" settings.

A couple of turn based games I think work well over on boardgamearena are Carcassone (because its easy to pick up and you don't really have to keep track of how other players are playing) and Tokaido.
I tried out an app called Subterfuge which is quite similar to Diplomacy a while back. It was a pretty good game. I haven't played much since it requires much more activity than Dip, but I've been meaning to play another game at some point.

I would recomend dominions 4. Turn based game played online by sendind turns to the server. Real gem of a game that has strong component of diplomacy inside.

I'm intrigued by Subterfuge. Are there in game purchases that will ruin the experience for me? Do people stop playing when they are not winning?
Old school turn based game - Metal Knights - I first started playing through a dial up modem - still play a game here and there. There enough active players to have a game going most of the time.

my bad. They're still riddled with NMRs and CDs and no players or defaults that set an RR. My time away caused me to forget and for that I apologize.

Why are conservatives so bad at Diplomacy?
Is it the lack of intelligence? Ego over practicality? Naive self-interest? Inability to understand other perspectives? Poor social skills? Or some other factors?

How to protest the right way?
Can someone please enlighten me?

Apparently being peaceful isn't ok. But exiting a stadium early as a sign of your rejection of the protest is an acceptable protest.

In FTF Diplomacy, players can see who other players are talking to. I would like a feature that shows who each country has spoken to during a given phase to reflect this. This feature could be turned on or off.
